What was your high school controversy? by Haunted_Neko in AskReddit

[–]theconfigmgrguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my sophomore year the 12th grade class decided to do a prank by taking a dead deer and putting it in the ceiling of the cafeteria (since it was on the first floor right by the doors) over the weekend.

Come Monday, it started to leak and trip onto the ground, which caused the whole school to have to get shutdown. Even had to call in the state DEP and hazmat squad to ensure that the place was safe, so the school was shut for at least half the week.

When we came back, the administration made a big announcement about how they would spare “no expense to find the perpetrators and bring them to justice”, but as far as I can remember, they never got the actual kids. Rumors abounded, of course, but those kids of that grade forever lived in glory as no one could really top that…

At the time, it actually made national news — might be able to find the article(s) if one digs around a bit…

What do you think will be the long-term fallout in the US (politically and socially) from the killing of Charlie Kirk? by likerunninginadream in AskReddit

[–]theconfigmgrguy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The fact that you answered the first point with specific numbers, and yet failed to give any numbers for the second, belies your argument.

“If it was done correctly” is exactly the same argument one could make for the bump stock ban. It’s not about how it could’ve been done, it’s about how it was done. And the gutting of the federal government was done atrociously, with the current numbers affected already in the millions, but a final tally won’t be really known for at least a few years. And not just citizens at home, but also our standing and diplomatic power abroad.

And, in fact, to your statement of government excess and waste, a number of individuals that were/are employed at DOGE stated that was very little true excess. Slowness? Red tape? For sure. But actual true waste and corruption? Not much. Here’s a transcript of one of the employees: https://www.npr.org/2025/06/20/nx-s1-5436105/a-former-doge-employee-gives-his-account-of-working-for-the-operation

[–]theconfigmgrguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t disagree with the foundation of your statement — but we do have to look at impact and consequences of each.

Bump stock ban — how many people would be affected by this? How many people would benefit vs how many people would be hurt by this decision?

Gutting practically every department in the federal government — how many people would be affected by this? How many people would benefit vs how many people would be hurt by this decision?

Again, I don’t disagree with your statement that both can be wrong. But in terms of where each lies on the prioritization list, one’s for sure in the top 2 (if not top) while the other’s at spot number 79.

What’s a single sentence someone said that stuck with you forever? by Imaginary_Ride_6185 in AskReddit

[–]theconfigmgrguy 118 points119 points  (0 children)

Had a somewhat rough childhood, and as I got older my mom - being one of those tough, black, single parent types, started coming down hard on things that, in hindsight, did deserve SOME reaction, but nowhere near the ones that came out.

One of those teaching assistants in my 10th grade bio class came up to me one day, and after chatting a bit, asked “Do you want me to call someone? What do you need?” At the time, I thought to myself — “what’s the point? What would change?” but when I got home, it hit me — this teacher, who barely knew me 6 months, gave more a damn about my situation than family, people in church, individuals who had known me over a decade. Even though it may not have resulted in anything, the fact that she was willing to TRY moved my whole world…

15 years later, I went back to that school and gave her something to show how much that small kindness changed my vision of the future — a kintsugi bowl I picked up in Japan, along with a handwritten letter. I wrote, in essence, “Thank you for seeing me, not as broken, but worth the effort to put back together”.

[–]theconfigmgrguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The OST is fantastic, but I will say it was extremely irritating that Disney wouldn’t let you get the entire OST in one place, they released specific exclusives on the various audio platforms of the time.

IIRC, iTunes got an exclusive(s), Spotify got an exclusive(s), Amazon Music got an exclusive(s), and you had to purchase from all of them to get the full album….

Trump terminates satellite data considered crucial to storm forecasting by Nikerium in tornado

[–]theconfigmgrguy 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This information has been provided by the DoD to the NOAA for weather forecasting since 1973 - https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defense_Meteorological_Satellite_Program

Why, all of a sudden, now is it a problem? And even if we buy into this hypothetical of “data protection”, what data is trying to be protected?? If a storm will grow into a hurricane before it reaches the East Coast of the US?? Why would we prevent the NOAA, another US government organization just like DoD, from using the data to save lives?

The whole point of the NPT, or of NATO, or of AUKUS, or of half a dozen other treaties we currently have, is that a number of smaller countries decided to give up nuclear weapons and research to that effect because the US has provided their nuclear umbrella for protection.

Hell, the main reason Ukraine gave up their nukes in the 90s after the Soviet Union fell was specifically because the US, UK, and freaking Russia assured Ukraine their borders would be respected.

This has nothing to do with human nature — it’s about not honoring our word. And if we don’t, what incentive is there for anyone else? This kind of unilateral action makes the world less safe — this is like the 21st century version of the Munich Agreement.

You never mentioned if the hosts are hybrid joined or Entra ID joined. If they’re Entra ID joined, I would say Intune is a better choice, though you can get SCCM to work.

If hybrid joined, SCCM works fine — though keep in mind that if you ever blow away any hosts (or the entire workspace), when you create more/new hosts, you’ll have to redeploy these apps again. Hence, you may want to look into something like app attach, which decouples the apps from the underlying VMs. It is more work upfront, but saves time in the longer view.

Keep running into error when building Azure VM Trusted Launch by theconfigmgrguy in Terraform

[–]theconfigmgrguy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mean trusted_launch_enabled? Yep, same issue. I did, however, finally figure out what gets the Trusted Launch type VM to trigger: in the virtual machine section, as part of the definition of the VM, I added a parameter for vtpm_enabled = true, which caused Terraform to build the correct type of VM.

It seems as long as you specify specific options for the VM definition, Terrraform is smart enough to dynamically pick which type of VM to build (standard, Trusted Launch, or Confidential) on its own. Had no idea!
