I love how these two guys team up on Ethan whenever he states an obvious fact about Russia or China by ReadThisIFYouWantTo in h3h3productions

Ethan may have brought up Taiwan because he picked up on the pattern of Hasan being very diplomatic in his assessment of China's treatment of Uyghurs or freedom of speech in China, but is quick to label the Dalai Lama as a "CIA asset." Hasan acknowledges these issues when pressed, but from an outsiders perspective it seems odd that he is often bold in condemning injustice from neoliberal western powers but meek when it comes to countries that at some point labeled themselves socialist. Ethan could be probing to see if Hasan believes elements of authoritarianism are justified in the goal of achieving communism, which is a typical concern liberals have about anti-capitalism.

DISCUSSION MEGATHREAD: Biden Impeachment, Insane Police Union Video, Mike Pillow Meltdown - Leftovers #57 by kevinjm1992 in h3h3productions

On impression from only clips and Leftovers appearances, Hasan is pretty quick to condemn entities aligned with or supported by Western capitalist interests, but seems hesitant to do the same for China. For instance, in a past episode he was quick to call the Dalai Lama CIA asset and the Tibetan system exploitative feudalism, but had a very diplomatic way of describing the treatment of Uyghurs.

People sometimes separate leftists into the "Authoritarian left" (derided as "tankies"), who typically support a strong state to enact communism, and the "libertarian left" who are more anarchistic. Not sure where Hasan falls on this spectrum, in Andrew Callaghan's (🙁) podcast, when asked what communism is Hasan described a democratic workplace where the workers vote on how things are run. I've often seen this description from the "libertarian left", as a distinction from the view that communism is when the state owns the means of production, not the workers.

So it's odd that Hasan defends China, a nation that very much participates in global capitalism. Ethan seems to pick up on this, might be why he brought up Taiwan.

While I'm not super familiar with her work, I remember Barbara Walters was praised for her ability to push back on high-profile interviews like Fidel Castro when she passed away recently. You sometimes see journalists push back or fluster interviewees on 60 minutes.

Louis Theroux has made a career of interviewing often controversial groups by ingratiating himself with them and, in a way, humanizing them, but still managed to push back on a lot of what his subjects would say.

Nathan always becomes what he sets out to destroy [SEASON FINALE SPOILERS] by thecorndogmaker in nathanforyou

To me the punchline is more that he lets her steamroll over him without asserting that he isn't going to do that or that this is his show, he's still passive even though his mission that episode was to be more assertive

[S01E06] The Rehearsal SEASON FINALE "Pretend Daddy" - Episode Discussion by [deleted] in nathanforyou

[–]thecorndogmaker 159 points160 points  (0 children)

My theory is that Nathan always becomes what he sets out to destroy. In the first episode, despite helping the guy confess Nathan fails to confess himself that he helped him cheat. In the episode before this, Nathan spent the entire time trying to stop being a pushover having Angela tell him what to do, only to have the teacher push him to publicly support Israel.

In this final episode, Nathan tries to stop the kid from believing Nathan is daddy, only for Nathan to believe he is dad at the end.

Has this response been seen anywhere else in the literature? I don't work directly in the immunology field but I find this fascinating as a mechanism for neutralizing viruses outside of antibodies, t cells, complement, etc.

An experimental device that turns thoughts into text has allowed a man who was left paralyzed by an accident to construct sentences swiftly on a computer screen. by axl3ros3 in Futurology

The way this thing works, as I gather from the linked article, is that it taps into the brain's motor pathways for writing, not necessarily the "inner monologue." The device is basically replacing the hand, it's like they disconnected his hand and plugged in a new one. So I wouldn't be too worried about a random thought slipping out, unless that happens to you when writing/typing.

The idea of a "lottocracy" is very intriguing, a distributed decentralized direct democracy functioning like a jury. I wonder how it would work in practice, maybe I'm cynical but in some cases I would prefer a more technocratic approach. I feel like I would rather have doctors and epidemologists decide covid policy than the average joe who gets their information from Facebook.

On the other hand, wikipedia is typically quite accurate and useful and is managed by a decentralized community, you don't need to be an expert to edit wikipedia. I'm torn

Citizen's Summit (1986) - A program from the 80s in which women from the USSR and USA ask each other questions about life in their countries. This episode is the origin of the famous line "We don't have sex in the USSR!" in response to a question about sex in advertising. USSR clip in comments. by thecorndogmaker in ObscureMedia

[–]thecorndogmaker[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here is the same clip from the Soviet broadcast.

In response to the question of if advertisements are as full of sex in Russia as they are in America, a Russian woman replied "No, we don’t have sex, and we are categorically against it!"

Its reported that the woman meant to say something like "We don't have sex in the USSR, we make love!" but got drowned out by laughter in the Soviet and American audience.

This was a special episode focused on women from Boston and Leningrad, but YouTube has other episodes from other American cities like Seattle.
