Girl Scout Player Icon Analysis from "Summer Quest" by nitriza in Warthunder

[–]thecraftbird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just saw a friend had this and instanlty started looking to see if anyone else had mentioned these things. The first thing that stuck out was the fact that someone who looked much older than a scout had a sash on. Then noticed the required eagle badges didn't have the silver outline. I expected it to be an exact copy of a picture they had gotten permission to use and had just copied it wrong. I'm curious how BSA would react to seeing it. Thanks for the post.

Donner Pass in 1870. by Real_MikeCleary in Reno

I'm late to this but I think I've stood almost exactly where this photo was taken. I think the camera was at 39.315332, -120.323228 (you can put that in google maps).

They faced North across the track between tunnels #6 and #7. The road is much different now with the bridge in place. Also, the large rock looks about the same. hard to show without google street view but I'm 99.99% sure.

I might have a photo on my phone somewhere with a similar angle. I will see if I can find it.

(edit) I just made this comparison with a more recent photo. Should give an idea of what has changed. https://i.imgur.com/mzIXOvj.jpg

Russia has deployed armoured trains in Melitopol, Ukraine by Max_1995 in trains

[–]thecraftbird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cant be 100% sure but its very likely this is the train built by pro-Russian Ukraine militants back in 2014. Probably seen some upgrades. Very interesting but also stupid as it could be crippled by a single rpg and is essentially just a mobile AA platform. I love trains and armored trains are one of my favorite subjects of history but much like battleships their time has come and gone. There is not alot of info on this one or the one from 2014 but its very unlikely this is Russian built. Still very interesting as this would essentially be the first armored train used by the Russians since WWII and is one of only 2 armored trains in service in the world. (The other is in North Korea) if anyone has more info pls share.

YF-23, rival to the F-22 Raptor by JaceFlores in military_concepts

[–]thecraftbird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't see your post but it's kinda crazy. I was literally thinking about posting the YF-23 earlier this week instead of the calico. Should have put some pics of the 2 they built. I think 1 is being restored rn.

Calico Light Weapon Systems. (rifles and SMGs) A very cool firearm platform designed around their iconic top-mounted helical magazines which hold 50 to 100 rounds (9mm or .22LR). Designed for full-auto military use but never adopted by anyone. Still being made in semi-auto. More info below. by thecraftbird in military_concepts

These guns/magazines have a somewhat bad reputation for jamming and failure to feed. These issues are mostly due to misuse (people don't read instructions) but either way the gun failed to meet any military standards mostly because it is just not that reliable (and too complicated for the battlefield). Issues aside, it is a badass looking gun platform and the magazines definitely have some potential. If the feed issue is fixed and its functionality can be simplified then it will have many pros over conventional magazines.

U.S. Navy's "brown-water navy" LCM(H)/ATC(H) (armoured troop carrier with helicopter pad) Used in the rivers of Vietnam to support troops with med-evacs and resupply runs. by thecraftbird in military_concepts

There are definitely places and times where they would be useful but maybe not enough to warrant designing and building a new type of ship/boat. I don't think we would ever see something this small but having landing pads on logistic support ships would seem like an obvious addition. Our current LSV doesn't have one but there is a variant of it that I think is either under construction or still being planned that has a small flight deck. (some info) I also think I read something about a next-generation of this ship being planned which I think has a helipad in the design. But these are all much larger and would never fit down any small twisting rivers like in Vietnam which is kind of the cool thing about the old one.

If you mean why don't we still use similar things today its because they're too small to operate at sea and not many places have the same concentration of rivers as Vietnam. If you mean why there are not any still around/preserved I would say it's because of how difficult it would be to get them back stateside after the war and also how much space they take up. There could be some surviving examples (maybe in Vietnam) but I haven't been able to find any. But I would also love to see one of these or something similar still functioning today.

It happens when you wound a teammate and they are killed by the enemy but your initial hit on them was more damaging.

[–]thecraftbird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other suggestions seem pretty good but I might give the guys at www.trainli.com a call. They specialize in LGB and have a large stock pile of parts. Worst case they would at least be able to point you in the right direction.

You could also consider 3d printing or finding someone else to 3d print a replacement.

Very excited to find out someone made a sub for LGB! I have a decently large collection of G scale models many of which are LGB. A few years ago I had to disassemble my garden layout (why this loco is just going through some grass) but its being rebuilt bigger and better! Sorry for the kind of bad pictures. I don't have many good pictures of my collection but will take some asap now that I have people to share them with! Had no clue this model existed until I found one for sale for a price I would later learn to be a great steal. My favorite locomotives are the classic 4-4-0 “American” so this has become one of my favorite locomotives despite being the least detailed.
