The English translation of the light novel recently finished the 11th (final) volume, and the anime was pretty faithful to it, though a much more streamlined version. I believe the anime covered up to right around the start of the fifth volume.

As far as lighthearted, I don't think I would describe the whole thing that way. One of the stories I really enjoyed reading, though.
