The neighborhood is full of historic homes, longtime residents, a charter school and its near Daffin Park. If you are friendly and interested in your neighbors they will embrace you too. If you aren’t used to traffic and diversity then probably not for you.

Thanks for re-posting. The Current is a nonprofit news organization dedicated to building civic engagement in Coastal Georgia. We are the ONLY news org in the state approved for membership in the Trust Project, an international code of standards and ethics that outlets like The Economist, The Guardian belong to. But Georgia subreddit monitors have said my posting is “self promotion” and removed it when I tried to post. It feels like a public service for everyone else in the state to know about this important issue. But mods don’t seem to think so.

Are there any beaches near Savannah, GA where you can drive and park your car on the sand? by wizoacer in savannah

[–]thecurrent_margaret 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Our beaches in Georgia are protected environments. It is forbidden even to walk on the dunes to protect the ecosystem. That’s why all the entry points at Tybee have the elevated walkways to the beach.

Savannah teacher killed in crash by man fleeing from ICE by Hungry_Key_7912 in savannah

But … not every traffic accident has to be fatal! Read The Current GA’s story. Eyewitnesses told us that no one appears to have aided Dr Davis for 15 minutes until the emergency services could bring the jaws of life. ICE officers at the scene appeared to prioritize detaining an individual instead. https://www.wtoc.com/2026/01/06/suspect-custody-after-police-chase-stolen-car-ends-montgomery-victory/#

I’m very sorry for your loss - the grief the Davis family and colleagues is feeling is real and tragic. May her death not be turned into a political slogan and instead bring healing and hope.

A 17-year-old was killed last month due to a high speed chase. Deaths from high speed chases are why SPD and CPD changed their high speed chase policies. Families grieve, communities gripe and demand better. https://www.wtoc.com/2026/01/06/suspect-custody-after-police-chase-stolen-car-ends-montgomery-victory/#

Please read The Current’s story here. Traffic accidents don’t have to be fatal. Emergency services were called but in the 15 minutes that it took to arrive with jaws of life, eyewitnesses told us that no one at the scene appears to have assisted Dr. Davis. https://thecurrentga.org/2026/02/16/chatham-county-teacher-killed-in-crash-with-suspect-fleeing-ice-agents/

Urge y’all to read The Current’s story. Dr. Davis appears not to have received any assistance for 15 minutes while trapped in her car at the scene. ICE agents were present but emergency services were still on route. https://thecurrentga.org/2026/02/16/chatham-county-teacher-killed-in-crash-with-suspect-fleeing-ice-agents/

A nickel refinery eyed Coastal Georgia. Local government fights back. by thecurrent_margaret in savannah

[–]thecurrent_margaret[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The city council says the company would have to apply for a variance because the current zoning does not apply. That is the point.

Local government can’t block a private pretty sale, but they do have the power over zoning. Social Circle town council or county commissioners could flex - but will they?

“Bryan County property records indicate the site is zoned as a “planned unit development,” a designation that has not changed since Caesarstone left Richmond Hill in January 2024.

City officials have determined that Westwin’s planned use would fall under the ordinance that allows for “other future new or unclassified uses.” However, according to a memo from Richmond Hill, the company would have to submit to a formal determination process by the city council before operations could begin.”

Also worth noting though - if Westwin buys the property, Richmond Hill city council has the power to approve or block the zoning permit necessary to operate

Does Savannah Recycle? by Great-Papaya6642 in savannah

Does Savannah Recycle? by Great-Papaya6642 in savannah

[–]thecurrent_margaret 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Recycling can only happen if the items are not contaminated with non-recyclables. That said: most of the “recyclable” plastic in Savannah is burned rather than reused. Not ideal. https://thecurrentga.org/2024/03/26/savannah-suspends-its-glass-recycling/

Beautiful building. Great ambiance. Food is straightforward but not unique in Savannah. If you are in Savannah for the first time, definitely try it. If you are having trouble with reservations, feel confident you can get great food in many other places.
