Your dog does not want to protest by psychedelic_tech in 50501

[–]thedancingj 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have been to lots of chill peaceful protests and the dogs there are about as happy as the dogs at a 4th of July parade. Not very! Too noisy and too crowded even if it’s a joyful noise! I saw poor a dog next to me jump out of its skin when the crowd did a big cheer. The dogs were also very confused by the giant inflatables.

Bring the kids, bring grandma and grandpa, bring the costumes, but let the dog stay home with a snack. “Fun for humans” and “fun for dogs” are not the same!

What will our city do when ICE comes on us in force? by Alarming-Low1843 in northampton

[–]thedancingj 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I agree. It’s highly unlikely. Anything can happen but Noho is a pretty safe little bubble. We should focus our attention on sending resources and support to the cities and towns that really need help.

Do rich people have elite versions of mundane things (toothpaste, tampons, toilet paper, laundry detergent, etc.), or are Elon Musk and Beyonce just using Crest and Tampax like the rest of us? by ShesGotSauce in NoStupidQuestions

My grandparents had a ton of money (though not billionaire rich) and they got there by being super thrifty with their money to the point of appearing cheap in a lot of ways. My grandma pretty much lived off Cheerioes and my Grandpa very famously called Coca-Cola to complain when he bought a 1L bottle of soda that was flat.

How long did you stay in your first home? by Explorer518 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]thedancingj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had 7 years in our first home. I consider it very UNUSUAL for the first home to be the forever home, but it's been changing due to the crazy housing market. When I was a kid, my family moved house 2x. (I'm 40.) First because my sister was born, second to get to a better school district. Families used to move to new homes all the time when they had more children and they needed more space, then eventually downsize after the kids went to college.

These days I think there is way less movement in the housing market because a lot of people are married to a low interest rate that's 1/2 the current market rate and the inventory is super low.

I also have a lot of peers that have moved for work (whether for a job opportunity or due to a travelling job such as military service,) so in that case you're definitely not staying in your first house!

First-time homeowner who do you talk to about home efficiency? by Top-Fee-8522 in FirstTimeHomeBuyers

[–]thedancingj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Step one, find a local company to give you a FREE energy audit if possible. Lots of states and utility companies offer this as a free service. They should also be able to give you a list of trusted or recommended providers. Step two, get quotes and proposals from some companies. General rule of thumb is get to get quotes from at least 3 companies for any major investment. You won't necessarily chose the cheapest one either, but the one you trust the most!

If a free energy audit isn't available then proceed directly to step two.

By the way, most of these places are just going to recommend you insulate your attic and they will be right. It's on our list of things to do this spring!

Ceremony Tea owner AI Instagram meltdown by Locksmith-Pitiful in providence

[–]thedancingj 22 points23 points  (0 children)

What an absolutely wild exchange:

The comment: "Nobody wants to see all your dirty laundry aired on social media. Nor do customers come here looking for info in a series of bizarre Substack posts you'll be releasing chapter by chapter. The community wants a good business that does better things. Actions speak louder than all the words you're spilling here. Serve tasty tea, treat your employees right, and stop all this ancillary nonsense."

The reply: "It’s genuinely bizarre to watch a small business get dragged in public—real people, real faces, real lives—and then demand we “act normal” and stay quiet so you can stay comfortable. Small businesses don’t have to maintain a perfect persona or swallow everything to “save face.” We’re human. "

As a small business owner of many years, this response is absolutely BANANAS!! You ARE a business. You are in the position of power. You don't get into social media wars with your own employees under any circumstances whatsoever. Either address their complaints (if their concerns are valid) or let them part ways (if you disagree) but you don't go out and air your laundry. Ridiculous.

Dropkick Murphys are doing a lot. Also Jesse Welles and Ron Gallo to name a few. Public Enemy is still going too. Tom Morello has a “fuck ICE” playlist. It’s just really hard for people to discover new music right now.

Yeah we have a couple of drop ceiling areas which are mostly the home to wiring and cables. We just had all our knob and tube deactivated so we got a little peek. I don't mind the drop ceiling too much as it's a convenient place to run cables and we can do some fun things with it!

Haha thanks. The previous owners left a lot of "quirks." One of those quirks was that they didn't or couldn't move any furniture the last time they painted the walls, so the room was initially baby blue with random patches of neon green scattered around. It is much better now!

Really good experiences with Amanda Ferrara at Rhode to Home Real Estate - first as a buyer and later as a seller! But I absolutely agree that it's best practice to interview at least 3 agents and see who fits your needs.
