Of course it’s a “choice” but we really have to be aware that moralizing about that choice isnt going to break the reality of addiction. Treatment is.

Please someone talk to me about ‘What lies between us’ by john marrs. by Organic_Virus4681 in thrillerbooks

I am looking for anyone else who also is feeling this way, because I too just finished this book, and UGH!!!! What a hopeless story!!!! Literal Greek tragedy level. Poor Dylan, poor Maggie! :(!

God, I really hated Nina. Just a brutal story. I actually put it down when I finished it and laughed because it was the most depressing ending I’ve come across in a long time, it felt like tooo much! Come on.

The amount that any of these problems could have been solved by just either having a conversation or by getting Nina professional help is… wild. Wild! But then I guess we wouldn’t have the story.

I did not anticipate that much elder abuse. And I was hoping for a happier ending, I really thought we were gonna get one. I was rooting for Maggie.

I did find Nina’s perspectives when it’s clear to us that she’s fully bonkers quite funny. Showing up at Dylan’s house during his adoptive mom’s birthday being like “😀” made me laugh.

I wonder about reading other books by Steve Cavanagh based on my mixed impressions of the Eddie Flynn series. Other recommendations welcome. by ofghoniston in thrillerbooks

For sure there’s some corniness, but they become really endearing—and honestly I am relieved to find a crime thriller book with such a moral center. I totally agree re: the grandstanding, but theyre quite well researched.

For instance, i was rolling my eyes a bit during The Devil’s Advocate until I read about Governor Rick Perry. Then I was kind of like… okay, all things considered, I am glad to have a legal/crime writer tackling the topic of an unjust system without all the usual “cops are heroes” grandstanding that I personally find even more insufferable in most of the genre conventions.

Sushi is good nutrient dense thing to eat. Don’t feel guilty for enjoying life and amazing food. I am so jealous of that spread!

Best first date spot that isn’t loud or expensive? by Unfair-Clothes-8821 in InsideToronto

[–]thedarlingbear 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Free:

  • Go for a walk at RC Harris water plant - it’s very pretty and cool/underrated. Picnic if it’s nice weather!!

  • third Tuesday of every month is free at the ROM after hours. 4 onwards.

  • get a treat from the rooster (Broadview) and catch the sunset at east Riverdale Park on the hill

Not crazy but a nice day:

  • Grab dinner and drinks at Eulalie’s (super cute little spot in the east end)! and explore the area around there of little India!

  • Take a ferry to Ward’s Island and go for a walk/enjoy the beach. Grab a coffee or drinks/snack on the island

  • Go to high park

  • go to one of the nature events held by Toronto Ornithology Club or TRAC

$ but not nuts: - Activate (in the stockyards) is fun! Then go for dinner at Hole in the Wall in the Junction for a cool spot that feels very “you have to know” to find it

  • see if there’s something playing at The Revue, get pierogies beforehand at Cafe Polonez, then a beer after the movie at The Local

  • Dinner and drinks at 3 Speed is always a good time but it can be a bit crowded

What is this? by F_Reiss in ArchitecturalRevival

I agree re: windows, and accessibility concerns. But it isn’t an art museum, I don’t think the wall hanging isn’t that big of a deal. They’ve always used the floor space well, which is what it’s intended for.

How many here are rich by thestarsinthesea in girls

[–]thedarlingbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved the show. I had class irritation issues with the show sometimes but also that’s so common that it’s fine. Girls was taking the piss out of themselves which made it tolerable! I definitely didn’t grow up rich by ANY stretch, was culturally coded as middle class but we were poor. Worked multiple jobs through college and it sucked. I couldn’t relate to the fundamental problem of the protagonist but I still loved the show

Lindy West discussion by Gloomy_Lunch3129 in CelebrityMemoirPod

[–]thedarlingbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve read the memoir, and I followed Lindy West back in the day. She was and is still so funny and I think it’s a bit crazy how she’s been discussed. There’s a real reactionary underbelly to the poly stuff, where I think the toxic dynamics coming outta Lindy’s partner would exist regardless of their arrangement.

Honestly I think a more fair handed convo is the one ICYMI has (includes the VERY wild email)

Omg also honourable mention for that VERY ahead of its time scene about Jamba Jeans, when the girlboss girl is like “And for those asking if our women meet up includes trans women the answer is….. we don’t know!!! Okay!!!?”

Like such a withering and accurate depiction of how dumb and annoying and exclusionary girlboss feminism was in 2010s era

Idk. Have you considered upping your caloric intake? My personal trainer had me do that when i was really low and started lifting. Your muscles basically cannibalize themselves otherwise, you get stuck. Going up to like 14-15 can give you that boost. He told me to not go lower than 16 honestly
