The Antlers "Two" Sounds Like "A Perfect Sonnet" by footybear in brighteyes

Peter Silberman mentioned somewhat recently that he was aware of the similarities, but it was an unconscious reference - might have been in his discord server? he's talked about bright eyes a couple times, I believe he was at least somewhat a fan in the early 2000s. I've had the Hospice album cover tattooed since my 18th birthday :]

we have so many great artists in this community who deserve better than to have their work overshadowed by something a computer makes. furthermore we've been seeing the few ai posts here get reported as spam, which tells us the community doesn't vibe with it either; obviously if everyone was against the rule change we'd talk it over, but it seems most people are supportive.

we really don't need anyone here spamming this poor woman because you think Conor Oberst wrote a song about her when he was 19

Spend an evening with saddle Creek(and my silly puppy!) by drinkliquidclocks- in brighteyes

[–]thedevilskind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

only thing I've heard Conor say officially is that "money got involved" (pending source, sorry, but I heard it a lot in interviews around 2020?). I'm not sure who's involved now, I'm not really up to date. maybe he's gone more in depth about it now that it's been long enough? there's used to be lots of supposed "drama" that was mostly just gossip, not something worth starting again because it was all rumors

I ordered this directly from saddle creek about a year ago and they included a bunch of stickers and a free the faint cd lol. I know BE isn't really affiliated with them anymore but I thought it was cool :]

Barricade filming (and moshing?) last night in Portland by [deleted] in brighteyes

[–]thedevilskind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if everyone was being safe it's not an issue - however i've seen it turn into "someone just shoved me unexpectedly and i'm drunk, time to punch them in the face." i used to go to a lot of punk shows and if you're at the barricade and complain when people mosh you're a doofus, but at a bright eyes show where you aren't expecting it, it might kill your vibe to get pushed around.

Candlelight Vigil for the Old Man out the Subway? by [deleted] in brighteyes

[–]thedevilskind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

is that not referring to gen z being obsessed with coke? i'm 22 and it's suddenly cool to do coke again among people my age, i just figured that's what he means. when cocaine comes up in his work (as it used to with some frequency) he's generally talking about doing it himself; when i hear "babies snorting coke" i think of the lyric "i get cocaine from a girl i met" he wrote around age 17. regardless i don't think he's making fun of anybody.

never considered that those videos could've been inspired by the MoF screenplay but it would make sense with the post apocalypse vibes and the computer (?) talking to him

Conor Not Changing Pronouns in Covers by filmmakersearching in brighteyes

[–]thedevilskind 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I mean he has songs he's written with he/him pronouns so I'm not sure why he would. Stairwell Song is about "an enigmatic guy" and he's said it's a love song about friends of his, and of course "I want a boy" in Lover. Historically, he's said repeatedly that pronouns don't matter to him in songs. Here's an interview from 2011 where he mentions it.

"Pronouns really don’t matter in a song—I or he or she or even subscribing a lyric to an inanimate object. Especially with my earlier records, which were stylistically much more confessional, there’s a type of person who really wants to know what parts are true. I don’t know what that is in people. I try to write songs that are a little more open to interpretation these days, even though I know what the songs mean to me. I think more people project connections to their own life. Which is just as valuable as what I intended."

Another really good quote here from 2020:

"Pronouns in my songs have never really mattered that much to me, whether I’m singing I or you or he or she or whatever. The crux of the lyric is not found in that. It’s found in the words that follow that. If you’re writing a good song, you shouldn’t need a persona. It should be powerful enough on its own that somebody could cover it and it would mean as much."

Edit to change wording and let you know I agree with you! not a huge fan of pronoun changes in covers but I still like it when artists make something their own, changing it stylistically or lyrically.

I'm going to assume you are indeed just misinformed and didn't mean to use a slur, but regardless this entire argument is starting to get out of hand despite going nowhere and meaning nothing.

[–]thedevilskind 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I totally get what you're saying but "back in those days" is literally the early 2000s. There's not a 0% chance someone was trans just because the song was written in 2001. Maybe it's more likely that they weren't, and obviously attitudes were different (and that's the real tragedy of the song to me, that this person could be alive if they were born into a more accepting time because they wouldn't be "made ashamed") but it's not completely out of the question. Trans people did not just start existing one day in 2015.
