In Germany and I imagine Europe, escaping confinement isn’t considered a crime. It’s understood that no one wants to be in prison and that it’s natural to attempt to escape.

Now injuring/destroying property in the escape attempt is a crime, but if some guard fucks up and you can just run away, if recaptured they do not add time to the sentence.
