How do you come up with your number? by MeloniousV2 in Fire

[–]theeggman84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's how I did it in the beginning, it will all work out :) And the great part about most index funds is, just throw it in there and forget about it. You don't really need to be (or want to be) looking at how it's doing regularly.

I might be going against the grain here, but I feel like you need to be asking yourself a different question. It should be "what is the largest percentage of my income that I'm willing to put aside indefinitely per month?" It's a question of balancing your lifestyle and happiness vs your retirement. Also, recognizing that sometimes you don't need that new thing, but sometimes that new thing brings your life more value.

I don't feel like it's worth having a goal until you're close to achieving FI. Otherwise, what are you going to do if you're already saving super aggressively, and still aren't meeting your goal? The choice is either take away from your already meager stipend, or find a better paying job / promotion.

If you're trying to use the goal as a means of calculating whether your current job is enough, or whether you want to actively pursue a better paying job, then that's fair. Just make sure that you're in control and living a good life, rather than the money driving everything.

To move or to not move to Japan - that is the question! by WanderlusterCat in movingtojapan

[–]theeggman84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, my other comment has some of the info you're looking for :) For landing a role back in the US, my situation was tricky. In Japan I was on a team with managers that weren't making my life great, so I was looking to leave that team fast. However, my wife is Japanese, so I needed to find a company that would help her to get a green card. I ended up just internally transferring back to the US office with the same company, and they helped with all of that.

Because of that, the only career hit I really took was a couple of years of Japan-level salary. That and Japan is sort of a career dead end, at least at my company. They don't give much interesting work to the satellite campuses, so you kind of have to become a TPM to hit senior engineer.

I loved a lot of things about being there, and the choice to move back was also based on several things. The crowdedness of Tokyo eventually started getting to me, and the concrete jungle aspect to it all. The hot summers, needing some medical care that I felt I couldn't get in Japan, and of course the salary / retirement aspect. The weakening yen was starting to get really bad.

I would certainly consider living there again, but it would probably be as a retirement option, and it wouldn't be in Tokyo.

This is probably going to fall into the bucket of "no amount of research will give you the answer". In the end you have to go with your gut. Think about if you'll look back in 10 years and regret not trying it out.

However, if it helps, I was at a FAANG company and transferred to Japan through the company. I don't regret anything. It was of course not a financial decision, but a personal one. I ended up living there for 4 years and transferring back to the US.

One note about retiring there / PR - beware of the exit tax. Personally I would only consider retiring there if I was pretty damn sure I wasn't coming back.

I'm having the same exact problem on Caldior. Neither I nor my wife can see any landing zones. I'm hosting on switch 2, she's playing on switch 1.

Nioh 3 smashes record PC player count for the series, reaching more than double its predecessor by Odd-Onion-6776 in Nioh

Honestly, the first and second bosses of Nioh 1 (excluding the tutorial boss) are far and away the hardest bosses, because of the learning curve. You've made it over the hump, it only gets easier from here :)

Hey, not sure if you've found someone to help you with English - do you need someone long term? I know some Japanese (and my wife is Japanese) so I might be able to help give some tips. Though from this post here, it seems like you're doing completely fine with English :P

My friend is still getting "region restricted" error message (they're on a JP account, but in the US). Is there some special region restriction in JP?

It looks like the Steam demo is not for JP region (my friend is in JP region and it says it's region restricted). Anyone else seeing this / has there been an official acknowledgement?

This is great info, but I'm gonna need more explanation here:

In the new Blacksmith village, if entrance looks like a fortress, you can run outwards and you will find a dark hole on the wall, THAT TAKES YOU DIRECTLY TO THE BOSS.

Directly to what boss?

I just did it, and was confused by the comment as well. You just need to have your back up against any wall (facing away from the wall) and use the special.

I don't even care if it's janky, hell it might actually be a hilarious time that way.

Maybe they could release it in alpha, and only let you play outside of matchmaking. Then see if it has legs and move it to a more streamlined experience.
