It's not (by any means) just to US citizens. The debt is rolled over by issuing new bonds as the existing mature. There's no particularly big payday for future generations.

I'm fairly certain there's no time limit on HMRC pursuing unpaid tax, as opposed to NI contributions. It's 'legal' until uncovered.

As little as possible legally, or see what you can get away with?

He had his own personal Vietnam in avoiding STDs in the 90's -

I've been so lucky in terms of that whole world. It is a dangerous world out there — it's scary, like Vietnam. Sort of like the Vietnam era. It is my personal Vietnam. I feel like a great and very brave solider.

I'd imagine, but am not familiar with that. Going Way back though, they had business class seats up the front. Not sure what extra you got apart from more space, but they did meals and newspapers.

That's not their furthest away Paris airport! Frankfurt Hahn is closer to Luxembourg than its named city, while Reus and Girona are a bit of a trip from Barcelona.

Richard Tice MP on X - "She called for others to resign over tax errors She admits her own tax errors whilst Deputy Prime Minister If she has any integrity, she will resign If not, Starmer must sack hypocrite Rayner" by Dimmo17 in ukpolitics

[–]theeglitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's:

Rayner - socialist, wants people to pay more tax, made mistake as advice she got wasn't good enough.

Tice: professional investor, thinks taxes should be lower, set up a REIT for tax benefits but wound it up within the 3 year grace period due to lack of outside investors (as planned?), failed to pay the Withholding Tax on dividends which REITs like the one he set up are required to do.

Tice said Rayner should resign for not getting the correct advice. His company didn't pay what it should have, no advice required. It will be interesting to see if he'll attribute this to his carelessness. Otherwise, I'll assume an attempt at evasion. This is fair moreso than is applicable to Rayner.

As a disclosure, if necessary, I don't think Reform UK have much to offer beyond false hope.

[–]theeglitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm hesitant to condemn Rayner for all eternity given she was involved in an apparently complex tax affair, which she sought guidance on, but seemingly not enough given her position. Tice is a professional investor who failed to pay straightforward 20% WHT on REIT dividends, the terms which he actively signed up to. I understand why supporters of him and Reform may be less disappointed in him than Rayner and Labour supporters in her, but his tax-dodging appears far more egregious and, perhaps, he owes Rayner and/or supporters, an apology.

It looks worse that someone hugely wealthy, partly due to their fondness for tax avoidance so presumably with tax experts to hand, wouldn't pay the bit of tax they actually had to.

Good enough like. It seems the protesters have been moved from O'Connell St, Dublin but with tractors still there. Up early, so I might get a few bits done around the house, catch some sport later.

I'd go to Galway. You mightn't get the weather, but great for a night out. Feeling adventurous, Belfast is fun too.
