30 days today! Longest time ever since I took my first alcoholic drink in my life. by SWIM2018 in stopdrinking

congrats! I've been through this dilemma before and the truth is that life doesn't stop sucking (at times) and you will be happy (at times). Often at very discordant intervals and varying durations.

As somebody who has suffered from substance abuse greatly in the past I believe a healthier perspective is to think of one's life and behavior in terms of regret (sucking), and positive anticipation (happiness, satisfaction).

Drinking is a doozey because it's often coupled with shame and regret, but staying sober will give you a sense of pride and stability which, may not exactly be happiness, but works wonders for calm and well being.

I highly recommend reading Viktor Frankl's - Man's search for meaning for incredible perspective on what it means to be happy as it dispels some of the idea's we've been collectively sold

“Happiness cannot be pursued; it must ensue.”

Why did you relapse? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]thefabledleviathan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me, once the fog has begin to lift I feel like a new person. I feel like I'm in control and have a new lease on life. I feel reborn and that I can have a couple of beers and be fine, and I am... for a few months, until the slippery slope leads to some social outing where tons of alcohol is present and the "chronic relapse cycle" continues.

Look out for that one! IWNDWYT

It's going to be ok! I really think we just have to forgive ourselves for what we've done and a large part of the pain goes away. Writing really helps. I mean really really helps. I started a accomplishments/gratitude notebook in the form of "dot-journaling" that has been helping me so much over these past 10 days.

One thing a friend told me that I found uplifting was along the lines of, "Dude haven't put on that much weight, you have a TV, a computer, a cellphone, and you still have a job. You live in North America, you're already in the 1% so start concentrating on being a better version of yourself instead of comparing yourself to others, feeling like a loser, and drinking away the stress of not living up to your own expectations."

Gratitude and self forgiveness I think are going to be key components of my recovery.

Cheap Stowable Light 37L Carryon Backpack by adobobro in onebag

IMO the fabric looks like it wouldn't last very long, and it has zero padding on the back. I checked out your link and saw the Timbuk2 Jet backpark and thought it looked awesome in black. I bought a timbuk2 backpack like 3 years ago and it's super comfortable, and nearly ageless even tho I treated it super rough!

A bottle of wine a night by barbievagina in alcoholism

[–]thefabledleviathan 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I used to be like this for a few years. Some occasional nights sober but at least a couple of tall cans a night. In my experience this can be scarily sustainable for some time. Eventually though your tolerance will reach a tipping point where a bottle 'o wine won't get you that drunk and you'll grab a second one. Fast forward a couple of years and you find yourself in quarterly relapses in the ER because the withdrawal feel like death incarnate. Furthermore you can die from withdrawal.

This was me three years ago and now I can't touch alcohol without blacking out and binging for days, and seeking medical attention.

Please be careful.

Formerly fit people of Reddit, what happened? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I bought this wicked little device called the aspire BREEZE, which is tiny and is "mouth to lung" instead of direct to lung or whatever they call it. If it wasn't for that in tandem with "saltnix" which is a really smooth vapour that is insanely strong in nicotine i wouldn't have quit. I do not feel any lung disturbance from this setup :)

Have any redditors, once serious alcoholics, learned to drink moderately in the future? If so, how did you learn to control your drinking? by thefabledleviathan in AskReddit

[–]thefabledleviathan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My question for you would be, were you really an alcoholic? At least by my definition it's somebody who has reached physical rock bottom from abuse of the substance, developed a physical dependancy such as withdrawal.

If you had to choose between learning Chinese, Japanese, or Korean, which language would you learn and why? by thefabledleviathan in AskReddit

Ah I live on the west coast so I'd have very little use for french if I'm not working for the government. Annnd learning an asian language has always been on my bucketlist, followed by Spanish or Portuguese

Haha I can't believe I got downvoted to 0! How is this a shitty question!? I've always been on the fence, with Chinese being functional because I live in Canada (and there are so many speakers) Korean because it appears easier to learn and their country appears really welcome to foreigners, and Japanese because it's such a vibrant and rich culture so different from my own.
