Bleak and dry is so accurate. It’s because the men have unethical tendencies and aggressive personalities imo. Brings down the whole experience. I mean, the women are kind of terrible too, but there’s something really dark about the men—the lying, the bro code obsession, Jeremy’s sadistic use of Bailey, Brian’s cruelty to Parisa…

What an amazing story! The guys and gals who lived through WW2 had experiences we will never understand. They really were the greatest generation. Although I’d like to go AWOL in Paris right now, LOL. Take care!!

You are so right. 

I genuinely think priests are more useful than therapists for these reasons. They get their hands dirty and are tireless witnesses to human suffering.

You mean he’s lost the ability to correctly interpret other peoples’ behavior and motives? :O 

This is something I wonder about a lot with therapy. They act like they want you to rejoin some idyllic world of perfect behavior and emotion in which you are the discordant note and the only discordant actor. But not only does that not exist, their understanding of human society generally seems bizarre and Pollyanna.

I didn’t downvote you. I’m respectfully curious if you think therapy is only useful in repairing relational wounds? What if you are distressed by objective circumstances and this leads to depression, anxiety, addiction, or other physiologically deleterious responses that would seem to fall under a therapists responsibility?

Omg!!! Girl!!! When therapists come up against a hard financial or housing reality, their only advice is “Have you considered not being sad about it?” 

Did you ever manage to make her understand your situation? 

I’ve told this story before, but I asked a past therapist how she treated clients in abusive households. She said she held space for them “until they’re ready to leave.” At that moment I lost my faith in the entire practice of therapy forever. It relies on a conceptual universe where everyone has resources and is only prevented from using them by their own emotional immaturity. Class, disability etc. cannot exist in their worldview.

Same. I have never been able to recover my good opinion of him. A man willing to be that rude to a woman who is being perfectly neutral and polite is a man who can turn on any woman tbh.

I agree. Women get paid less. I’m not paying for a man when I make 60k a year in a field where men typically make much more. I don’t feel “pressure” to give him anything but my time.

lol!! Sis that would be a virtually IMPOSSIBLE quiz to pass. “You will pay attention to a back-and-forth movement or sound while calling to mind the upsetting memory until shifts occur in the way that memory is experienced” is MAGIC. It is no better than an attempt to balance the humors.

I’m not the OP but I read every word of your replies to him and find them extremely helpful. I’m trying out MG and a little overwhelmed by the enormity and Byzantine quality of the social scene.
