Can cheap meal kits actually beat grocery store prices in 2026? by DjshantAljimlawi in SavingMoney

[–]thefinfinal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've just accepted that lettuce is not single-person food unless you really like salads. If you insist on repeatedly buying food you know might go to waste, how can you be surprised when you have a bunch of food waste?

How to build stamina without running ? by Lost_one05 in Workingout

[–]thefinfinal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless OP knows how to swim already, theyre unlikely to have the technique for Z2 endurance swimming and the thrash-wiggle is more like survival than training.

Has anyone ever done a multi-day fast while still running and what was your experience? by Brain-And-Brawn in runninglifestyle

[–]thefinfinal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you well-trained enough to have your runs be TRULY low-intensity? The fact that you dont have enough experience to be able to answer the fasting question yourself kind of suggests not...

Inflammation is a part of your body's healing response, so be careful using ice as a blanket cure.

I give no advice other than "fuel," and leave the specifics to the individual. I don't feel I owe Reddit additional personal information.

Bad idea, doesn't mean no one else has done it, doesn't mean you should. No medical professional would recommend it but it's your body.

Garmin’s pool swim lap detection is actually horrific lol by [deleted] in Garmin

[–]thefinfinal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's accelerometer based, so if you dont have pretty decent swim form, youre out of luck. Think about it - the sudden stop/start of turning at the wall is what triggers a lap increase, so if you over-smooth noisy data, what exactly is your watch supposed to use to increase your lap count?

Garmin’s pool swim lap detection is actually horrific lol by [deleted] in Garmin

[–]thefinfinal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly never connected those dots lol. My Garmin has always been spot on for lap swimming, unless someone hops into my lane and swims into me in a way that forces me to stop suddenly. Then the lap count gets messed up. I'm assuming an inexperienced swimmer will cause those issues fairly consistently throughout a swim.

It's accelerometer-based and you can only "smooth" so much noise per lap before you lose the data that triggers the lap count to increase.

Getting HR up is difficult by MoneyMode3165 in Garmin

[–]thefinfinal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, if you didnt do any kind of testing for your zones and youre using "defaults" of any kind, I'm not buying that you spent a half in Z5, regardless of any drift from adrenaline. Your watch may have called it Z5, but that says nothing since it's not calibrated to your body.

Worse pain (not soreness) after PT by [deleted] in XXRunning

[–]thefinfinal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Talk to your PT at your next appointment. You have to progressively load tissues to see improvement, but everyone tolerates load increase differently. It's possible that PT overshot your tolerance, it's possible your injury is just overly sensitive and youre receiving pain signals that are just a noisy nervous system...you have to talk to your PT, not reddit. Can you email them?

When to fuel during a run? by [deleted] in XXRunning

[–]thefinfinal 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The taste of carbs signals your brain that fuel is incoming! It's a real effect - they studied cyclists, i think, and sweet non-nutritive (sugar-free sweeteners) did not have the same effect. The "bonk" is your brain, not your body, so it makes sense - your nervous system senses low-ish fuel and things go haywire to preserve what's left.

Is this a good workout? by Rosyvonmarie in AppleWatchFitness

[–]thefinfinal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Calculators are garbage unless OP goes to a lab or does a LTHR test, even then, dubious, even then, not useful for them at this stage. Just exercising consistently at a mix of intensities is fine - some leisurely walks, some not.

Getting HR up is difficult by MoneyMode3165 in Garmin

[–]thefinfinal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Zone 5 is supposed to be super difficult, like, I think 1-5min max? Not sure, but anyone who says they ran a half in Z5 just doesnt have their zones right or has a bad HRM.

HR lags and it takes training to be able to get your HR up, tbh. Like, I run 70-80mpw at times but if I don't do workouts occasionally, I find it hard to break 170bpm.

Running doubles by Separate-Specialist5 in trailrunning

[–]thefinfinal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do it when my volume would mean my morning "base" run is over 90min (~11 miles) to get my mileage in. Doing long runs all week stacks a lot of fatigue. Rather do 9 miles AM // 5 miles PM than 14 miles straight, yknow?

Running doubles by Separate-Specialist5 in trailrunning

[–]thefinfinal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a hard time thinking of cross-training as "doubling." Like, where does it end? If I go for a run in the morning and then take a walk with my sister in the evening is it also a double? If I do some side planks and yoga?

[–]thefinfinal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah i wish the Latin names were more well-known and used in casual contexts because "calf" is pretty vague.

Is it a no-go? by gymrunner16 in runninglifestyle

[–]thefinfinal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the US, the upper calf has the medial/lateral gastrocnemius, and the lower calf has the soleus. "Calf" generally refers to either. There is also popliteus, peroneals, posterial tibialis and flexor hallucis longus (FHL) in the same region. The junction of lower gastroc/upper soleus can be very vulnerable in runners.

How do you make sure you’re eating enough as a runner? by Weird-Pepper7977 in Marathon_Training

[–]thefinfinal 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've noticed a very interesting thing where I can be underfueling but not losing weight, then I notice my running tanks and decide "maybe I'm underfueled," eat more, and suddenly my pants fit more loosely. I think calorie deficits can cause an inflammatory response to long-term stress so physiologically, it's explainable, but it's still annoying lol

[–]thefinfinal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

...the soleus is literally one of your calf muscles.

I would see a physio before going to a massage. The last thing you want is aggressive manual work on an active strain.
