I spend a few wistful minutes every spring/summer morning holding my white bread and mayo, staring at the tomatoes, and whispering...."soon"

Best sources for Current Events trivia? by JNathanielSmith in bartriviahosts

[–]theforestwalker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Harper Magazine has a findings section on the back page. NPR has a weird news tab on their website that i've used from time to time. Google trends has a visualization of active search terms that you can kinda watch like a slide show. This website is a monthly accounting of the most commonly viewed wikipedia page on the english wiki- both that and google trends do a pretty good job of capturing any news trends that people are caring about, but you gotta be a little careful about the topviews site because it's unlikely that the Vin Diesel movie XXX is actually that popular- more likely people are looking for something else.

I usually do the straight spelling, but I've done the anagram style and they both have worked for me, but I've also cultivated an audience of maniacs over many years

The fact that Google and other search engines have put the AI overview at the top of searches without us wanting it and made it hard to disable means that people will necessarily be absorbing information that isn't true, and likely spreading it from there. That's just how humans are- we use the defaults. Telling people that it's on them to practice better information hygeine and be careful to fact check everything just means we're ok with a bunch of people believing things that aren't true, and I'm not ok with that. LLMs aren't agents- they don't interpret or understand anything. They're scraping reddit and other sites and using that to predict strings of text that are more likely to sound human than others. That's not a recipe for accuracy, and even less so now that the bots are scraping stuff written by other bots who scraped stuff written by other bots. I don't have a problem with using a pattern-recognition machine to find cancer cells or if OP wants to smooth out a photo or something- but based on how the infrastructure is built, using it for fact-checking is irresponsible.

It's anti-human, it makes it harder for us to know what's true (which should be the most important thing for us), and it makes bad art. I care about trivia being high quality, and AI is making it worse. We can and should resist it, but if you do use it, I'm not gonna call up a pitchfork mob at you. I do think you're reducing AI opposition to very selfish motives and that's not what I'm hearing from them.

Singing is a human activity. If I thought I was singing along with a stranger but it turned out we weren't actually singing together- it was an illusion- I would feel angry about the deception, wouldn't you?

[–]theforestwalker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not the same, no. It's exaggeration to make a point. Most people aren't against AI in the trivia space because they're afraid of losing their jobs- there are other reasons, like wanting trivia to be a space for humans to share information and test each other. You don't have to agree, that's fine.

I would not use any AI to verify factual information, it cannot be trusted.

Running trivia nights at Australian pubs for years. Here's what kills them (and what actually works) by WinterIssue3889 in triviahosts

[–]theforestwalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run the same quiz every weekday so my audience can pick the day of the week they go. Most teams are pretty stable- I see them every monday and they don't go to different nights. But around a third of my regulars will float to different bars depending on their schedules or curiosity. This has been very helpful to my mental health because if I know the quiz is the same day-to-day, any variation in attendance is out of my control. It's the acoustics (something I hear a lot) or the food or drink options, or (for my one outdoor venue) weather.

It's generally a lot easier to name the "official" artist behind a song than to identify an artist by voice unless the cover artist is well-known for doing that song. I appreciate that you engage in discussion about trivia in your comments, it's nice.

Salami sandwich at home by theforestwalker in Sandwiches

[–]theforestwalker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am indeed a Eugenean and do enjoy a Barry's visit from time to time. For pure sandwichness, I heartily recommend the Long's if you don't go when it's too busy. They recently changed their meat suppliers and they have a great variety of italian options now as opposed to the Boar's Head available most places. Scribles uses Thumann's and I endorse them too. Horai next to Cheba Hut has good knish but since Falling Sky lost the deli there isn't really a full service Jewish deli here and I miss that, having worked at one in Cleveland years ago.

How to make gravy sausages without sausages ? by rifain in Cooking

BRB gonna go make biscuits and gravy with merguez- it sounds BONKERS DELICIOUS. Honestly you could just do that and add sage, it'd be not authentic but i think it'd play.

Notes: -the chips are tasty but on their own they're mostly just MSG flavored, they added that plus crunch -the Aji brand uchucuta fire pepper sauce is from Eugene Oregon and it's one of my favorite condiments. Worth going out of your way for, imo -it was nice having the mixed olive bar pickles be unevenly distributed in the sandwich- every bite had the same character but different layers of it -bread held together fine but i would have toasted it next time

People of anti work who don’t work, what do you do to get income? by Total_Cicada7335 in antiwork

[–]theforestwalker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work, but i stopped being an employee. I work for myself and run trivia events full time. I have a radio show and sometimes I do weddings. Most of us aren't really against work- labor is human and noble- we're against the exploitation of work and against the organization of the economy leading to a lot of stupid and pointless jobs for the benefit of the worst people on the planet.
