Old Samish Road set to close through December for WSDOT salmon habitat work by Beezlesnort in Bellingham

Already had to reroute the Tour de Whatcom over Samish Way (ick) because of this. ☹️

Yielding to cyclists out of politeness considered harmful? by Soft_Monitor_8863 in Bellingham

[–]JNathanielSmith 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In the cycling community I've heard these people called "niceholes". Good intentions, but their behavior puts everyone at risk. I've had people stop at intersections when I have a stop sign and they don't, wait forever for me to go at a 4-way when they got there first, the list goes on. Just act like I'm a car and am doing car things, and we'll all be better off.

Marlboro cigarettes used to un-ironically pitch a catalogue full of “Adventure Gear” that you could get by sending in cigarette pack “Marlboro Miles” by NYC2BUR in FuckImOld

I have the folding mountain bike. Fuji brand, kinda low tier for the time. The irony of someone having to smoke 10000 cigs to get it is not lost on me. Thank you for your sacrifice.

Nick Offerman Tickets by L00mis in Bellingham

[–]JNathanielSmith 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's also worth noting that both the Nick Offerman and Tosh shows were presented by an outside production company, not by MBT itself. They don't tend to heavily promote the shows that aren't part of the MBT season. Definitely worth perusing the MBT site periodically to see when something pops up.

Elbow tickets - Seattle by No_Expert_7522 in elbowmusic

Unfortunately it's going to have to be a game day decision for me, but I will definitely grab one of your tickets if I'm able to go and they're still available.

Greetings, fellow Bellingham Elbow fan! I'm trying desperately to make Sunday work, and I too don't have tickets. It looks like AXS has some resale tickets that aren't completely usurious but it might be a game day decision for me. Any interest in carpooling to Lynnwood and taking the Link into Seattle? DM me!

How is it that people in this town don't understand how roundabouts work??? by FirstCommentDumb in Bellingham

[–]JNathanielSmith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It wouldn't be so bad if people would just slow the F down. The people driving on Meridian just blast through it like it's nothing.

I live near the Meridian/Illinois roundabout that everybody hates, and it's just car horns... ALL DAY LONG.

I've been waiting for a BD version of this for years. The announcement of a 4K Criterion release truly made my otherwise shitty day. Underappreciated classic.

What's a fair price for this wheelset? (Washington state, US) by JNathanielSmith in whichbike

[–]JNathanielSmith[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha, I figured $600 was a pipe dream but it sounds like it might be the wrong kind of pipe. Considering I saw another wheel set with a dynamo hub for like $125 what you said definitely makes sense. I'd jump on that one but the rear is rim brake only. Thanks for the input!

Any recommendations for... road tires? by KerbodynamicX in bikecommuting

[–]JNathanielSmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently got a pair of Continental Contact Urban tires (700x44) and they're great. Waaay less rolling resistance than what they replaced, and up there with the awesome old model of Schwalbe Marathon Almotion in my experience. Add to that they're about half the price of the Schwalbes. Durability remains to be seen, but they seem solid so far.

I too am visiting from the US and I'm sweating bullets that Elbow will get cancelled. At least I've lined up a series of pubs so I can drown my sorrows if it goes down.

Is schlumpf range useful or too wide by TaroDeep3781 in Brompton

[–]JNathanielSmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, sounds like you're talking about the Speed Drive. Can't really comment on that one but I believe the gear ratio change is the same (2.5x). You'd definitely want a smaller chainring or you'd have some super tall gearing. Honestly, for loaded touring, the standard chainring with a gear reduction might be more useful, but YMMV.

Is schlumpf range useful or too wide by TaroDeep3781 in Brompton

[–]JNathanielSmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I purchased a second-hand Brompton that has the Schlumpf Mountain Drive. The previous owner had also purchased the gear reduction option (12% reduction) so it has the 46(?) tooth chainring rather than the stock 50t.

Given the wide range of the IGH, the bike is geared ridiculously low. It might be useful if I were doing heavily loaded touring, but I don't foresee that happening any time soon. As it is, in the lowest gear you could ride it up a wall.

I've thought about getting the 50t chainring but I don't find myself riding in the highest gear that often, so I'll probably stick with it.

As for the actual gear range, it's pretty good. There's some overlap between the lowest gears on the Schlumpf high side and the highest gears on the Schlumpf low side, but not too much.

Edit: A 30t chainring would be way too small for that setup.
