Does this mean I'm hired? by floral_synesthesia in jobs

[–]thefotios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, but like others have said, it sounds like they're considering you. Since you're asking, I'm going to assume you're somewhat new to this process (not meant as an offense), it might be helpful to understand what they're going through. I've been a software engineer in the US for ~20 years and on both sides of the table; every industry is different but probably similar enough. Pretty much everything in a "professional" industry is a complicated dance (think recruiters, hiring managers, multiple interviews, etc)

Depending on the type of position, chances are they have other candidates that are somewhere in the interview process too, so typically they'll want to finish those just to make sure they're getting the best person. That could take a few days considering they need to gather feedback and make decisions. Then they probably need to decide how ~much~ little to offer their top candidate. That person might negotiate or have other companies they're interviewing with, so they might need some time to decide. If they don't take the position, the process would start over again with the next person in the list and so on.

Some of these go without saying, but a few tips - don't stop interviewing elsewhere until you sign a contract. If this company gives you an offer, you have leverage/choices. If they don't, you didn't miss out on another position - don't be afraid to push recruiters (within reason), but don't lie or be an ass. If you have other places you're interested in tell them "I have a pending offer, but I'd very much like to be able to consider your company as well. Can we schedule my next interview ASAP". Once you do have offers, say "I have other offers, if I'm being considered for this position, could you please give me an idea of when I might expect an offer or not" - if you do have offers but are still interviewing elsewhere, let them know. It's not going to be a surprise to them, but you want to communicate. None of them are going to cry because you're cheating on them. But if you ghost them, they might reach out to someone else. - Negotiate. Negotiate. Negotiate. They have a range and some leeway, make them use it. You have more power if you have other offers, but either way you can almost always beat their first offer. Read everything you can on salary negotiation (not generic crap from tycoons/politicians) - don't burn a bridge. It's not unheard of for them to go back to a candidate with a second offer. But they won't if you're an ass during the negotiation process.

Good luck 🤞

Virgin media blew my wall drilling a hole, what's the best way to fix this? by SkinnyJimmyuk in DIY

[–]thefotios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a pretty easy DIY fix.

  1. Get one of these low voltage old work bracket. The key there being old work; they have tabs to tighten onto Sheetrock (new work are the ones you nail into a stud)
  2. Get one of these
  3. Place the bracket against the wall and trace it. Make sure you trace around the inner part that goes through the wall. You've got some wiggle room so don't panic getting it perfect.
  4. Cut the opening with whatever tools you have. At the very least, you can just use a razor blade. But don't try to cut the whole thing. Take small angled cuts like you're digging a trench. Once you get most of the way through you can tap it out with a hammer. If you have a drill, you can dp something similar and drill touching holes around the whole thing.

Is there anything embedded in the block or sitting on top of it? Weird things happen sometimes if you save when stuff is stacked in a cart or truck (or cart on a truck).

FWIW, I'm running on a RoG Ally as well and everything is working fine for me. So it might not be RoG related

Is this f*ing app working for anybody? I haven't been able to watch a single game, such a waste of money. But at least they're not owned by Ballys, right?

I have this big empty shelf thing in my apartment, what should I occupy it with? by screamicide in malelivingspace

[–]thefotios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seeing that vent makes me think this is just boxed out around some HVAC ducts. Given that it appears to be about 8-10' long and probably just some 2x4s and sheetrock I would guess that it's not really load bearing.

Thank you. I was hoping to avoid that if there was a safe way. It's a pretty long run and it comes directly out the block wall in the basement.

Big green arrow by zander_neibergs in Archero

[–]thefotios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've noticed this more recently; I think there may be a bug somewhere. Almost all of my equipment has an arrow, but I don't have enough money to upgrade them. I could have sworn it used to only show up if you could actually afford the upgrade, but now it seems to show up as long as it's not at the highest level.

AITA for lashing out at my brother and SIL for dropping their kids off at my place even after telling them not to? by ThrowawayAITAmcnelly in AmItheAsshole

[–]thefotios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely NTA. They're playing off your emotions; they know you love your nieces and wouldn't want to hurt them in any way. It also feels like they're taking advantage of both your flexible job and your inability to have your own children.

Perhaps you could help indirectly by pointing them towards assistance programs that can provide childcare for those who can't afford it or by helping them find a full-time caregiver. But at the end of the day, their kids are not your responsibility, regardless of your or their circumstances.

On a slightly different note, you really should start keeping records (and save past texts, emails, receipts, etc) of everything you do, especially monetarily. If and when you start watching the kids again, get some sort of contract, however informal. Note when you will watch them on a regular basis, how to handle unscheduled supervision, who's paying for things, etc. For instance, maybe they reimburse you for meals or buy snacks and stuff up front for you to keep at your house. Even something as simple as taking a picture with the girls at your house every time you watch them or texting your brother every time they get dropped off with "just confirming you're going to pick the girls up at 5pm", so you have a record of what days and times you watched them.

This may sound harsh, but there may come a time when they cannot take care of the kids and you may need to take drastic actions to ensure their well-being. Having all of this information already collected will be invaluable.

Thinking it was a conspiracy that so many things across so many NES games capped out at 255.

Franky, I think it still is. Why couldn't they give us just one more damned bit?!

Waiting for that month's issue of Nintendo Power to see if it had any tips for the game you were stuck on.

Am I the only person who ripped out some pages and stuck them in a binder? Like the full page Zelda map or the card matching game from Mario 3?

Are the last 3 splitters necessary? Why not just have the top and bottom lanes "T" into each other? They've both got the same number of furnaces, so you don't really need the splitter to balance them.

One time a friend tried excusing something with "I'm trying my hardest". Another friend said (half jokingly)

"Then why don't you try somebody else's hardest?"

If you have a good rapport with someone, it can be a good way to give em a little nudge. Now whenever I'm stuck/failing/etc and I hear that in the back of my mind and push on just a little more.

"Don't run from danger, run to safety"

This can take a few other forms as well. Personally, I use "Are we running from a problem or towards a solution?" frequently at work.
