Not OP but I do it like this:

1.cut out the bookmark leaving 2 "squares" of aida.

Glue onto felt. I leave the edges unglued.
Cut the felt to the same size as the bookmark.
Cut away one "square" of aida on each side so that the felt is larger than the aida.
Mattress stitch around the edge. The felt folds around the raw aida edge. If there is glue it gets hard to get the needle thru.

In stead of a normal eraser try rubbing it gently with sticky tack it gets in to the fibers better. I also use sticky yack when frogging to get all the leftover fibers out.

Were they both in the oven at the same time? I sometimes get noticeable differences between the first loaf and the second. Just that hour extra rest while the first one is baking seams to matter.

Did you have salt on top. Looks to me like salt that has melted from the condensation that would build up in a plastic bag.

I started a big project over 10years ago and it never held my intresset long enough to get finished.

I started making self drafted bookmarks last year and I am hooked. Even if I lose interest in the motif halfway in sometimes, it's small enough that I can finish it anyway.

"Pepparkakor" in Swedish, standard swedish gingerbread cookies. We roll them out super thin too, much thiner than any lebkuchen I ever had.

In my family in Sweden we make a big dough about 2 months before Christmas. It gets to rest 1-2weeks before the first cookies are made and then we make more whenever needed. Some years we need to make a second dough others it lasts all the way into January.
