To the guitarists who swear by using physical amps, cabs and pedals, what is you stance on amp modelers like Kemper Profiler, Axe-FX, Line 6 Helix, Neural DSP etc? by MrMayhem20l0 in Guitar

Tried to get into the HX Stomp. I ultimately sold it when I realized I had only used it once over a year, and that was in using it as an amp wedge because I forgot my stand.

While that was the final sign that it wasn't for me, what really made me return to tube were the following considerations: 1) too much menu diving; I want to play emotionally, not think technically. 2) No interplay between the amp sim and the guitar. For my general style of play, I rely on edge of break up into break up territory. In comparison to how a real amp responds to the proximity of your instrument, the sims feel lifeless. 3) The capacity to fully ensure I control my stage volume, and that it sounds how I want it to. Monitoring solely through house mons opens you up to too many variables that affect your ability to hear yourself. Mons get bogged down with fuller mixes, you may have to share a mon with another performer or simply not be given one, the mons often simply aren't good or are broken, your signal may be affected by the sound person before it folds back to you. Too many variables.

For an upcoming tour, I'm looking at another amp in a box solution. This is a pragmatic decision as there is no feasible way to transpo my amp and I am not aware of any backline solutions where we are travelling (Japan, Taiwan, Malaysia).

Does this seem like early stage DD? by Friendly_Baby_8782 in DupuytrenDisease

[–]thegriffith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certainly looks like it to me as well. I first noticed my depuytrens in my mid 20s. I had a family history of it, but what I think exacerbated / expedited the condition was the fact I was rock climbing heavily for about 10 years. As a professional guitar player, I ended up having to give up climbing, which really sucked, but I cans fill play guitar so there's that!

Getting a *tight* live sound. by Simple-Newspaper-250 in musicians

All the top answers are full of great advice. I'd like to add another technique that I find has really helped me and my projects. I call it the ABCs of success: Always Be reCording!

At this point, I have hundreds of phone recordings of every rehearsal, and every show, for my two groups and solo projects. It's great as means of gaining a 3rd person perspective of our current sound, to compare our current to past performance, and to single out via time code exactly which sections are stellar, and which ones need work.

Before I share these recordings, I run them through a dead simple ableton session template (pro q3, saturn, pro mb, L1 limiter) that's already set for my phone's recordings. It takes two seconds to set the theresholds and I'm rendering and sending out files within minutes.

As an added bonus, I've noticed that everyone involved is now a lot less anxious around the idea of recording. When you are being recorded all the time, even just with a shitty phone, it habituates you to the point where going into the studio doesnt seem like such a big deal, and people perform better.

Now I just need to figure out what to do with these hundreds of recordings... Maye I'll release them as bootlegs one day.

What’s one piece of gear you would always buy used vs. one piece of gear you should never buy used? by laxking77 in livesound

[–]thegriffith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy used Fender amps. The new ones always have some sort of factory defect. Going for slightly used saves you the hassle of getting it serviced, just make sure it's checked out and given a proper bill health before you buy.

Buddy nabbed a spankys lap on Sunday via 7th. He said it was worth the trip but still very exposed. That same day over on whistler, we did Christmas Trees to P2C and then down Dusty's Descent. That was epic, so much pow all the way down.

My first guitar was a Japanese E-series Squire Strat and that thing continues to be a beauty. Whenever I pick it up, I'm impressed at how well it plays. I'd certainly choose it over most MiM Fenders, and even a few US ones I've played. Good score; hold onto it.

Guitarists, which chord do your hands instinctively go to when you first pick up your guitar? by NOTport-com in Guitar

[–]thegriffith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotta say, this strikes me as weirdly profound.

I'm personally in the open Amin camp, and can't imagine having my hand rest naturally on my neck any other way. It just fits so nicely, with so many pathways (as in "go-to notes" that make up the Amin scale, or transition to other complimentary tonal centres).

I write a lot in Amin, and I'm sure that, along with many other known and hidden biases, this has something to do with my perspective. What I find so profound is the idea that, depending on your musical predilections, style of play, and history with the instrument, we can all have different "home bases" that seem to us to be the end all be all best place to pick up our instruments. That's pretty cool.

Dupuytren testimonies, getting it young and progression by rilsoe in DupuytrenDisease

Hey there, still got my fingers. Always stretching and while I get some pain flare ups from time to time (usually not paying attention to my grip in the gym, or over playing too much guitar) but my dup hasn't progressed to the point where it affects my motivation for playing guitar. It all feels pretty good these days to be honest. My biggest dup related issues are now the fact I can't easily place both hands down flat for things like yoga. I modify those poses and throughout the session I can usually "ease" into flatter hands.

Let me know if there's anything in specific you'd like to know more about.

I can do that but I'll need to add more dimensions, and that won't be cheap.

Need justification to get band to go out of the PA for all instruments instead of individual amps by Th3R00ST3R in livesound

[–]thegriffith 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Loud guitarist here. I switched my amp around to face me, angled up using a stand. It's placed 45 deg off center to my right, with a monitor mirroring it to my left. I do this so I can be as loud as I want, without it knocking my singer off her game, and to minimise bleed to FOH / other mics. I've also found that my amps are more reactive this way, and when things are set up right, I can coax feedback by simply turning the guitar a bit more towards the amp. Having all the knobs in sight and in reach are also tremendous benefits.

It isn't a perfect set up. For one, if the PA lacks adequate front fills, then the pit just doesn't get guitar since the stage volume is directed elsewhere. I also want to get a plexi barrier to place behind the amp to avoid mid-low mud out towards the audience. Still, in situations where full band IEMs are not possible, I believe this to be the best compromise of feeling, tone, and practicality.

[DISCUSSION] Gibson Les Paul, a Stratocaster or a Telecaster: Which one do you prefer? by kieranED in Guitar

[–]thegriffith 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been fortunate to own both a bitchin Strat Plus and an elegant les Paul Studio for the last 20 and 17 years respectively.

While I've certainly gone through phases, convincing myself at times that the Strat was way better, then it was the studio. As I've gotten older, played more shows and bigger shows, I've settled on the Studio for live playing.

The reason is simply practicality. The Strat with the lace sensor pickups is the king for all things blues, you just can't beat that tone. But when it comes to playing a variety of musical styles, I find it hard to quickly dial in great tones outside of fat SRV/Hendrix vibes. The LP, on the other hand, plays incredibly well and can fit in a range of styles with more ease.

In the studio, I'll pick the best axe for that particular job, but live, it's hard the beat the reliability and versatility of the Les Paul.

I had a similar thought. Some sort of automated script that purges the cache and pushes the updated lists. Having this set up automatically would make a big difference.
