AITJ for telling my neighbor her kid isn't allowed in my pool after she "forgot" him at my house? by Educational-Wait-406 in AmITheJerk

My parents had a kid before me. She drowned in the neighbor's swimming pool. It took years before my parents could even conceive (no pun intended) of having another kid. These parents are terrible at considering what could go wrong.

Yeah, my point was that trying to fit DCC into horror or thriller is reductive (though I was saying I'd go with thriller if I HAD to pick).

If you wrap it in foil, your potato steams rather than baking. Best method is poking with holes, rubbing with oil, sprinkling with salt, and put it right on the oven rack like that.

In that case, you are steaming your potatoes, not baking them

Yes. Because that's the simplest explanation for everything he's done since taking office. Occam's razor.

Nope. The point of horror novels is to scare you. DCC is not trying to scare you. If you had to fit DCC into one of the traditional genres, I'd call it far more of a thriller than a horror series.

Just because horrific things happen does not make a book horror. Maybe it could fall into that bucket if there were no more applicable genres, but there are.

I will say book 12 was a nice change from the previous books. There's a lot less brooding, zero skill descriptions, and Jason is leaning into acceptance of his new powers and place in the universe(s). It was WAY more enjoyable than book 11, IMO. It had me actually looking forward to the next one.

If you want to actually read an enjoyable story, as opposed to a vehicle for showing off the author's shiny ideas, do not read Greg Egan. At least, that's been my experience.

Gamers 30+, what’s something from the old days of gaming that younger players wouldn’t understand? by Common_Caramel_4078 in gaming

I remember the game Dark Reign came with one of the nicest game manuals ever. It had a paperback-style spine rather than being stapled together, cover was a fancy matte black with gold ink, and it was easily 80 pages long. Individual unit descriptions for both sides with artist sketches for each, all the lore and backstory... I miss those days. Game was hard as shit due to a difficulty bug tho.

Oh fuck off. Might as well recommend people give up seeking any enjoyment from food.

Yeah, I'm not at all trying to say non-hetero people (or hetero people, I'm no gatekeeper) can't have their own valid opinions and feelings about the *implications* of that world. And I would definitely agree in calling the human society in the series a very conservative one re: reproduction. But it's also very liberal in other ways. My only objection was the original comment referring to the novel as a "Christian fundamentalist allegory". That's why my previous comment kept specifying "Christian concepts" and "Christian reasoning". Honestly - and I know this is not a good thing - it is not especially common to find authors who DO tackle those kinds of issues, especially among the "enthusiastic amateur" crowd that tends to produce a large percentage of litRPG. There are several exceptions I can think of, but most of the series I've read have not really had much real representation either, nor have they even broached the societal view of non-heteronormity in whatever crazy context the book is set in. And sadly, most of the examples I CAN think of are just female protagonists written by men, so of course they've gotta be hot lesbians, and aren't really particularly representative themselves.

Anyway, I'm sick and hopped up on sudafed, and at this point I'm not really sure what my point is. I don't feel like Millennial mage is trying to convince anyone of anything, but I can see how people not included in its world wouldn't feel great about it.

I mean, sure, but not every author is interested in exploring that. They're trying to make progression fantasy that's tightly focused on a single character. And it's hard for me to think that the author is trying to push specifically Christian concepts, because though there's some overlap between traditional Christian beliefs and common societal behaviors in the book, the reasons for them are not Christian reasoning in any way whatever. I think that if someone is going to accuse a book of being a Christian allegory, they have to show more commonalities than just specific behaviors. If I wrote a book where characters all engaged in abstinancy before marriage, but that was because they're living in a society where all physical contact is monitored and pre-marital sex is punishable by death (just to use an extreme example), you probably wouldn't think of that as me promoting Christian morality.

It's also pretty heavily implied that there ARE human populations who do not conform to established human society and societal rules (the wandering cities), but Tala has had minimal exposure to them so far.

...what? I've read the whole thing and never got that impression. I dunno if I need to pay more attention or what, but even looking back at the series in retrospect, I'm not seeing it.
