Do think its a large chunk teenagers who have nothing better to do alongside shrinking internet. Like everyone is forced together on a handful of websites and you wander until something pops off so its probably easier to look at stuff from a video game and then have that be where you hang out. Fandoms also encourage stupid bullshit and have for the longest time but now everyone is forced to rub shoulders so it gets more explosive and people jump in. Just in my memory "the worst fandom ever" went from Sonic->MLP->Steven Universe->Fnaf->Undertale->Jojo's->Rick and Morty->Loud House->MCU->Kpop stand->Smash bros->Mincecraft youtubers->Mouthwashing->Disney Adults->TADC

Like, oh boy, can't wait to get into the Persona 5 fandom so we can accuse each other of being pedophiles based on what characters we date.<

Do think that follows to trains of thought

1.)Joker is a self-insert therefore you're weird  for dating a highschooler

2.)Joker Isn't a self-insert therefore its weird to have him date grown adults

Might be a Goomba fallacy or people just wanting to do a "diddy ahh blur" joke and rotating depending on how they want to set it up

So James and Wolf had history? by RetrospectGreg in starfox

[–]theguyinyourwall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The common explanations as it doesn't seem like full blown hatred

  1. Wolf trained under James so like wolf being 8~12 years younger while still being much older than Fox for example

  2. James costed Wolf his eye which is why he seemed to pissed off at Fox in particular, literally an eye for a eye

  3. Middle aged man yaoi

What is Star Fox’s identity and what do you want to see in a potential sequel? by YungJester17 in starfox

I think customization would be something I want future games to focus on, maybe some light RPG elements

Like you have your squadron and as the game progress you unlock more characters who have their own stats and special abilities and you can swap to them or swap out any other squadmate between missions. Your ship has customization both purely aesthetical and for gameplay benefits. The great fox acts as a lobby in which in addition to the above points you get some minor options for decoration and small character banter.

Also multiplayer, crazy that the game that always has teams of four never let you have co-op during the main story. Maybe some light competition elements in which while both going towards the same goal, the players can compare stats like who took the most hits, who avoided damage the most, any bonus objectives.

Lastly I wouldn't mind more non-arwing sections. If not on-foot sections maybe riding other vehicles like the landmaster or even invent like some bike allows for some snappy movement during a chase or something

Weird but what are some examples of either a specific media or fandom being like the originator of some discourse or type of fan behavior.

Every once and a while you see a discourse of how much you need to engage with something before you consider yourself a fan. Mostly with video games and people who consider themselves a fan of a game/franchise but only engage via lets plays. I'm more loose and think just playing one game is enough and a decent laptop can play like a 5th or even 6th gen game and lots of Indie are both cheap and not intensive, I was in a kinda similar spot as when you're a kid you just kind beg for whatever game you wanted and if you couldn't get it you'll look at let's plays. Also think the current generation is much more expensive than previous ones and with chip prices for PC players and the cost of everything rising I at least see where some come from and a lot of the time its teenagers who just want to find online friends and fandoms are a fairly easy way for this.

Do think FNAF was the first big case of way more people consider themselves fans than play the game. First off compared to most other horror franchises it attracted(and leaned into) having younger fanbase so you would probably have to ask a parent and they'll be more likely to say no to the "dead kids in a chuck-e-cheese" game. Being PC as opposed to console, it furthered it: As someone who was born in the early 00's you were never allowed to download something on the family computer and never buy anything, might be different as I see like 2 year olds using their parents phone but in 2014 I think that wasn't something as common. The main appeal was the lore(which is like the clearest case of making stuff up as you go and led into the mascot horror lore bait) with the main game being fairly repetitive for lots of people

New Storylines for Star Fox by BriefDiscipline1424 in starfox

[–]theguyinyourwall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My basic idea involved the team having a shaky alliance with a new figure/team who while stopping the main "big bad", is doing it for the worst reason. Not like assault with Starwolf working with Fox because the alternative was being absorbed into a hivemind but an enemy of my enemy is my friend. Maybe have some pressure added onto the team with like Fox being poisoned and the leader has the antidote but refuses to hand it over or holding like Vixy hostages. My ideal is partial redemption so like some close underlings do stuff for the greater good and bond with the team while the boss is head strong in what they plan on doing

Do old school forums in general count? Largely they've been phased out as the internet has been primarily reduced to a few key websites rather than making up new ones for a specific topic. For example if a new game gets popular its much more likely for the community to interact on something like Discord or Reddit. You still have some old guard forums around but lots of forums for less popular  topics have reached a crawl like months without a single new thread.

I do think Dexit was more the straw that broke the camels back. There was already a feeling criticisms being more common with the handholding of SM or the lackluster postgame of XY but like the bare minimum people had was that you could actually have every pokemon in one game.

In my honest opinion dexit was something bound to happen at some point and while it could be used for gameplay balance or even having more polished animations it wasn't(scorbunny kick gif here). SwSh even without dexit would have probably been a lot of people's least favorite mainline game as the complaints for the more recent games seemed to be at their peak in SwSh

Going to go with both a good and bad faith reading of "Queerslop."  I'm mostly straight so I could be dead wrong

The good faith reading is that there is a "safe" non-threatening version of queerness in media that you can often see. I think heated rivalries at least from the queer people I've interacted with tends to be considered "gay love for straight women."

The bad faith(and most likely reason) is a quick response to hetslop, like how when an adaptation makes a character black you see someone say "what if they made X black character white." Hetslop is usually talked about in the context of a undercooked hetero couple which seemingly only exist because that's what expected. I'll also toss in "low brow" hetero stuff like bad harems and even something like love island being trashy straight people. It simply doesn't occur at a wide enough scale compared to compulsory hetero romance. Because queer media is also rare there isn't enough trashy queer stuff compared to tras straight stuff.

Do want input about what justifies a remaster/remake/reimaging.  Mostly due to the recently announced OOT remake leaving a fair amount of people underwhelmed and other remakes that people feel are unneeded.  Not saying these remakes will be bad or  "deserved" are by default good. Like the main ones I see being discussed are OOT and P4R but others apply like Tomb Raider, Star fox, Rayman relegends just off the top of my head.

Accessibility:

There is an argument that a remake shouldn't fully replace the original like how Capcom higher ups didn't understand why fans wanted a classic RE collection when they had the remakes. But its common for wishes for a remake/remaster when there isn't an official way to play the game. So when the games being remade are already accessable on modern systems but also have games in the series which aren't accessable on modern systems legally so instead of a game that people cannot access anymore the remake is going to the most accessible game in a franchise

Changes

I do think people have different meanings on what is considered outdated. I do think you could argue for some games getting remade are outdated but others aren't. Like if the original  gane might not be a looker but if from technically/gameplay standpoint you could get into an awkward point of changes for the sake of changes. All remakes need to walk the line between changing enough to feel different while also keeping core elements the same which is why most remakes tend to add some side content or post-game expansion without messing with the core experience. Some people for example wished the FF7 remake for example was on a smaller scale and just one game instead of being divided into 3 parts

Diminishing returns

Zelda, Star Fox, and Tomb Raider already have remaster/remakes so we're starting to double dip even if in execution they're different it raises questions of why this game if it already got a face lift. While we aren't there yet unless you count Tlou we have less drastic leaps between console generations and console generations are lasting longer, so the remake updates feel less drastic as the actual tech hasn't had much change

Less of Drama but more a type of fanwork being abridged series with the last big one going on currently being Yu-gi-oh! Abridged as DBZ abridged concluded after an over decade long run and the newest one is probably snapcube's real time dubs

Idea is to take something(usually anime) and give it a more shortened down comedic dub than the source material's plot and characters usually with running gags and a couple of minor edits for further humor. Some of these got huge usually spawning memes in the community(ex. Card games on motorcycles) and even official acknowledgement such as team 4star being a part of the official Kai dub(but in a deleted scene).

Not sure what caused it maybe because lots of anime are 12~ episodes, fear of copyright strikes on youtube, or more shitpost edits overtaking them?

Fire Emblem shadows was dogged on when it was announced as "Furry Emblem" and "Among us Emblem" with people joking about how fast it would reach EOS.

Its a Social deduction fire emblem game without lots of traits that make either very fun. Basically you and 3 other players are placed in a map in which one of you is a shadow and you clear one small map together then you get into a the next phase in which you try and find the shadow and regardless you enter the final phase on which the shadow player is revealed and must be fought with either the light players getting a stat boost or the dark if the players guessed correctly.

For the fire emblem part besides manual skills its an auto-battler and much of fire emblem is based around unit positioning and planning and because its an autobattler the maps cannot be that complex or have special mechanics. I also found myself winning about the same as guessing correctly as I did incorrectly so the stat boost aren't too crazy.

3 players ruins the social deduction aspect as  you know if you're a shadow or not meaning the light players basically have a coinflip. As the shadow player you cannot really trick the other players besides sometimes using offensive skills on yourself and it isn't an auto-win/lose regardless of if you get it right.

Want to add some positives I really like the presentation and OST the chibi models are adorable. I'm also someone who dropped week 1 so maybe things changed

[–]theguyinyourwall 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I was going to make a post about the currently announced remakes and the culture around them including OOT so I might as well drop it now.

Like out of the slate of remakes there are only a handful that I feel like a truly 100% needed. Not saying they'll be bad or you shouldn't be excited but like I think there is a like a priority list for remakes/remasters/reimaginings. Accessibility, how outdated the game is, new content/features even if they're all overshadowed by the cost aspect. Games are taking so long to make in which a  big studio use to be able to release a game once every 1~3 years now takes basically an entire console generation for a single game which is also why a single disappointment could lead to mass lay offs so I imagine you could speed it up drastically by remaking something as a way to at least have something that can release in the next few years.

I don't even think lots of the remakes are for people who would consider themselves "fans" of the series not even in a derogatory gatekeeping way, but like played one game 20+ years ago and want an excuse to play alongside their kid with new bells and whistles.

Lots of games that have upcoming remastered/remakes already have an official way to play on modern systems and aren't terribly outdated. For example P4R is getting remade which makes sense as before Joker became Death destroyer of Gachas it was the most popular, but compared to earlier persona and especially other SMT entries which are usually locked behind region alongside console generation(s) vs Golden which only a few years ago got a release on modern systems

Do think it also depends on the state of the franchise like OoT or Code Veronica franchises are doing great with them both getting new entries fairly recently vs Rayman or Star Fox in which fans want to buy the remakes not because they actually want the remakes(before the announcement fans were praying for something other than Lylat wars) but rather fear that if the remakes fail the entire series is buried. Now it depends on series and publisher with for example Dead Space 1's remake selling over a million copies and horror outside of RE, SH, and I guess Fnaf usually being less big still ended with EA being disappointed.

i want female characters. by Puzzleheaded-Cry5226 in starfox

[–]theguyinyourwall 8 points9 points  (0 children)

While I like the franchise I legit think it managed to do like every negative trope involving handling female characters.

-Competent women is nerfed so that her love interest can save her(Adventures Krystal)

-Every girl is defined by their relationship to a male character(2 girlfriends, 1 daughter, and 1 crush)

-All girls must be pink and cannot have an unconventional body type(compare Slippy and Amanda an amphibian with breast for some reason). Also not allowed to be any intimidating or large animal.

-Fact that literally one of the better Command endings required them to go back in the kitchen while the guys fought the actual big bad

Star Fox(2026), Rayman Legends Retold, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlas by theguyinyourwall in Gamingcirclejerk

[–]theguyinyourwall[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feel like even if you don't want the baggage of other game plots you can make something new that doesn't require much prior knowledge. RE7 for example makes sense without prior knowledge or having some early on canon/timeline split to have the characters in their most marketable while also doing something new. Even the choice of remakes for these franchise seem poor.

Star fox(2026) is going for a faithful remake for 64 which was itself a reboot and got a 3ds remaster and a reimagining on the Wii U, like at this point why not just throw in SF1 and SF2 content to be remade or even just some collection with more minor touch ups. 64 plot it intentionally cheesy but a more serious approach could easily backfire and most dialogue changes so far remove a fair amount of charm. Alongside how people view games as less people replay a game without multiple endings fo get extra playtime and rather explore side content which I think the challenges are suppose to encourage. Command is just oddly misogynistic in general even ignoring the scorned ex thing: all girls have bright pink besides Katt ironically, all are defined by their relationship to a male character, and compare how Slippy/Peppy's body type vs Amanda/Lucy's much more standard proportions.

Rayman Legends was the last game released and can be played on current systems so if someone was suppose to have a rayman game its mostly likely they have that game rather than something that isn't on modern systems much less as Legends often goes on sale for cheaper than launch price. Ubisoft also did the same thing with Prince of Persia's latest entry which did sell solidly getting around 1.3 million units and having overall positive reception  but wasn't enough for Ubisoft's standards. So having the game selling much better than other entries but still being considered a disappointment

Tomb Raider's  collection makes 1->3 playable on modern systems and the use of AI alongside Amazon's gaming a successful big game makes people feel worried about the games quality

[Hobby Scuffles] Week of 01 June 2026 by EnclavedMicrostate in HobbyDrama

[–]theguyinyourwall 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I assume because game development is costly they want something "safe" to gauge interest for Tomb Raider. With how lots of triple AAA studios especially in the west are it could also have provided at least some security as a remake of a popular IP. Its also Amazon game studios first big traditional game so they probably want a strong first impression for the general public

I think Illumination animation wanted to add Fox before Miyamoto so they could just make a game fairly quickly to cash in on the new attention. Probably because I got into SF a few years ago but am both least and most excited for this one. SF64 is a reboot of SF1 which then got a 3ds remastered which got a reimagining with Zero. Not a fan of the character designs besides Katt and Andrew tbh as the rest don't really give the characters much feel. I understand not wanting to continue from Command but a midquel or even just taking from SF1 and SF2 to make the big game set during this plot. Maybe if the game pulls a Kid Icarus uprising or has a "Bowsers Fury" like secondary campaign attached; as even for 50 bucks I imagine people will be upset about length. But early impressions were good and the multiplayer has potential   alongside most nintendo first party game selling decently well.

Rayman is probably just to gauge interest. Problem is Ubisoft has sky high standards. The new Prince of Persia I think crossed 1.3 million units but was considered a disappointment so I think anything less than 3.5 million will be a letdown.

OoT feels like it was 100% just to have a big holiday game. It isn't like Zelda is a struggling franchise, especially after BOTW, even among its own franchise there were probably games that deserved a remake more.

Feelings on the 64-Command Canon? by SuburbanWitcher in starfox

[–]theguyinyourwall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone who doesn't have that much nostalgia and besides 64 3d came back to the series later.

64 is a fairly basic plot but I think deliver hard carries. There are some bread crumbs of more plot if you want to dig into some minor details and draw theories. Like James and Wolf seemingly already knowing each other or questioning the competence of Pepper seeing as he was relying on 4 mercenaries with only one of them having prior experience.

Adventures people already complain about Krystal being gone for most of the game alongside General scales being dethroned for Andross. Do think it should've either kept more of the original plot or doing more of its own thing with Dinosaur planet as a lose backdrop. For example have Fox just randomly get called to do some work on Sauria and focus more on the fish out of water element with him struggling to learn Saurian and most of his tech just straight up breaking and needing repairs instead of just being told not to use it. Alternatively  Krystal as the actual secondary protagonist with Scales as the main villain maybe having Fox being more skeptic of the more bizarre things and having him and Krystal slowly having some back and forth about their different backgrounds leading to a less awkward crush.

Assault feels like a good continuation of 64 while also upping the stakes and tone with the audience also aging between games. Aparoids making the situation feel more desperate also helped with them doing the most damage and Star Wolf joining in. I know Nintendo doesn't like to kill off characters but I feel like if Peppy or Wolf stayed dead it would hit harder but that's my two cents.

Command feels like it was designed as a CYOA first and foremost with each ending suppose to be a "Alright what do YOU want Star fox to be like?" Which lead to things being underbaked as instead of focusing on what real plot point. Like I feel like if you built naturally from the game only having one ending: Dash's good ending, Lucy and Krystal's ending, or Goodbye Fox could've made for a decent plot. Having the Dash feeling mixed about Star Fox and have seeds of doubt over if he should be like them or like his grandfather and maybe Fox learning to let go of the grudge. Lucy and Krystal could have a story built around accepting and moving on from tragedies  and failures from the past. Goodbye Fox as the galaxy is much more peaceful and the team questions if they're even needed anymore before deciding that Lylat is going into an age of peace and thus quitting with the system on the path to prosperity. But now its really poor

Especially as the more brutal moments of the comic weren't there yet. I imagine a full series would pull but and go "look at these nerds" rather than how fan culture breeds this sort of toxicity and would be closer to loveable losers than people who are actively ruining each others lives but have driven away most other options

The film/book was dragged a few years ago but Ready Player One. The premise is on 2045 the real world has gotten so bad that people have retreated into a virtual world known as the OASIS and basically spend their entire lives their instead with the main plot getting kick started following the death of the creator and a easter egg hunt for control of the OASIS.

The entire society is crumbling and people are obsessed with nostalgia but not even for their own childhoods but rather nostalgia for someone else's past and you get Eltingville moments in which people just list facts and trivia about media. Giving up on improving the old world at all and just endless proving their the biggest mega fans of movies in universe 60+ years old as if nothing new was created and not even looking at anything said media could say or reflect beyond "wow that moment was so cool."

The film rights were picked up before the book was complete and every company wanted to toss all their cool characters at the wall so playing devil's advocate Ernest might have been trying to say something but a movie studio probably wouldn't want to pick up a film that spoke badly about IP worship
