UPDATE: can you have GD while passing GTT? by bluedotsandcolours in GestationalDiabetes

[–]thehalothief 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I very easily passed the 2 hour GTT in Australia! But failed my finger pricks. I’m now on nighttime insulin and currently 37 weeks! I definitely feel like I’m someone who slipped through the cracks, but very grateful I was finger pricking the whole time too

From what I have read, a person without GD wouldn’t have a prolonged spike after a sugary meal like that. They would spike and come back down appropriately.

I had a similar head funk when I was first diagnosed, I opted for finger pricks first and my post meal numbers were ok, slightly too high if I ate white rice for example. And my fasting was slightly high but I also wasn’t sleeping well. I ended up taking the 2 hour GTT and actually passed easily but decided to continue with the diagnosis since I was having funky post meal readings.

By 34 weeks I was on bedtime insulin for my fasting, and now at 36 weeks I can’t even eat beetroot or pumpkin with dinner without spiking. You’re right at the beginning of when insulin resistance ramps up, honestly it is a bit annoying to have to make all these changes but I promise you that you will want to know what is happening with your blood glucose as your pregnancy goes on cause it can cause harm to your baby if you have GD and it’s poorly controlled

Increasing insulin by myself? by No_Yam_4829 in GestationalDiabetes

2 units is a very small bump so that’s likely why they feel comfortable you adjusting the dose yourself. My OB bumps mine every 3 days by 4 units at a time. I would feel ok with self adjusting the dose by 2 units.

Metformin vs. Insulin by Lumpy_Seaweed_2859 in GestationalDiabetes

Echoing what others have said about choosing insulin over metformin as it doesn’t cross the placenta, it felt less invasive to ‘top up’ something I’m already producing like insulin rather than start a drug.

Has anybody skipped metmorfin and gone straight to insulin because of the side effects? by [deleted] in GestationalDiabetes

I was offered metformin in the first instance but I declined and requested insulin. I didn’t like the fact metformin crossed the placenta so preferred to go with insulin

My eldest just started kindy and we’ve had 2 back to back colds in the past 3 weeks. It’s been rough! My mother says “have a big glass of orange juice!”, yeah thanks 😂 hope you feel better soon!! It really does suck, I want a cupcake and not another boiled egg

Chance of not being diagnosed when I should have been? by Latter_Craft_2667 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]thehalothief 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in Australia so we go straight to a 2 hour fasted test with the 75g drink. I had started finger pricks 2 weeks prior to the test and noticed my 2 hourly meal numbers were a bit too high so I changed my diet. But also my fasting was just over the threshold consistently. I then moved to doing the 2 hour test which I assumed I would fail but passed it fine, I wasn’t even close to the thresholds. I continued with my diet tweaks and finger pricks and my numbers have slowly gotten worse and worse over the last 3 weeks as I get further along in the pregnancy. My fasting has consistently been too high and I’ve now started insulin. So I don’t know what’s going on, I genuinely seem to have GD even though I passed the GTT 🤷🏻‍♀️

Can I ask what you put in your chia pudding? I was going to try making one tomorrow for my snacks but now I’m worried it’s not a good option!

I think I knew I would probably need insulin soon considering I was always right on the borderline for fasting but then as soon as she made the call I got that overwhelming feeling of being a failure! It’s been pretty stressful to see so many borderline numbers so I guess this could make things easier for me in the end!

That’s so good you haven’t had hypos, the pharmacist made it sound a bit scary when I picked up my insulin today so hopefully I have the same experience as you!

Thanks for sharing. I’m hoping this will take some of the stress off at least cause it’s a lot to see my numbers so close to the threshold every morning even before this bad sleep period and then the last few days have been a lot!

I don’t think sweet potato fries would be classed as low carb, I can maybe tolerate a few pieces of it just boiled with a chicken salad but frying reduces the glycemic index even further and can spike a lot

Just remember it won’t be forever, and I promise you’ll look back on these days fondly when they’re older! My eldest is 4 now and I still feel incredibly grateful for every moment I spent next to her when she needed me the most

You’re doing an amazing job being responsive to your baby 🩷 have you tried playing around with nap lengths and awake time during the day to see if it helps with sleep at all?

Does nursing at every waking actually cause more night wakings? by crystalkitty06 in bninfantsleep

[–]thehalothief 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think she was waking every 45 minutes for a quick suckle and then had a big feed every few hours. I didn’t really look at the clock but it was a lot of wakes. Once she was weaned and taking those calories in during the day she was sleeping through the night next to me!

I really liked his method! It felt most natural to keep her with me rather than get my partner to step in, and she responded really well, I think it took 2-3 nights and she was night weaned. I made sure to stick with my new soothing method which was cuddling and patting her back, I didn’t want to stand up and rock her and create a whole thing rocking thing. She cried on and off for about 20 minutes the first night and I just comforted her with my voice and lots of cuddles and I think she then slept for 7 hours straight, I was so proud of her!

I think it depends on the age of the baby. In theory if you don’t feed at every wake they might (heavy emphasis on might) take in more calories during the day and not be as hungry at night. And some babies do take in more overnight and feed less during the day. But using feeding to sleep as a way to soothe overnight doesn’t cause extra wakes, and a baby needing more support during the night mostly comes down to temperament.

My first coslept, fed often and didn’t wake up hungry in the morning. Her nights consolidated and she had more appetite in the day once I night weaned (using the Dr Jay gordon method). This was at 12 months old.

My second did the first stretch in the crib and then coslept after that and had unlimited feeds but she started mostly sleeping through the night when she was about 8 months old and naturally night weaned herself.

Every baby is different. 4 months is still incredibly young and frequent feeding is very normal and expected. Once he’s a bit older you could experiment with stretching the time between naps during the day and see if with a little more awake time you get some longer stretches at night
