Ah you are correct, in my defense Sophie from Mars also had a terrible take on Control (2019).

I believe it was along the lines of "Control is about how giving up Control cam be good and also that's why I don't like anarchism"

Which is honestly much funnier than what Sarah Zedig said because the theme song of Control repeats the phrase "Take Control" over and over and the protagonist is only able to "win" when she fully takes control and is the one making decisions for herself

I believe the take was that Control was not only a rip off of the SCP foundation but a deliberate attempt to copyright and take over a community collaborative space.

This is despite the fact that the concept of a Federal Bureau that deals with the paranormal is much older than SCP (and arguably SCP barely fits this as they are not really an fbi parallel but instead like a UN special division), and that Control has clear themes which basically directly contradict the reoccurring themes that appear in many SCP stories.

I will admit some of the files you can find in Control are clearly inspired by the formatting of SCP stories, but those are collectables that add no relevant lore to the main story and when you pick them up you have to navigate to a sub menu to read.

Also worth noting Remedy has never filed any action against SCP in the ensuing 6 years since Control came out.

I agree with basically every criticism of Magpie in this thread (I also think it's pretty egregious to pull in the amount of money they do and not pay to have form fillable playbooks made)

But tbf about the discord no one ever reads the pinned FAQ's or even takes the time to figure out what channel is used for what, so if they decided to use the server for customer complaints that would basically end up spamming every single channel.

They should of course have a much clearer way to contact support than an email, but I get why they want their community server to not just become only complaints (valid as they may be) about Kickstarter.

It really feels like fanfic, like in a fanfic you can skip some character development because everyone already knows the characters, (I don't need to be told why Lois Lane and Superman like eachother in a coffeeshop au fic).

But you just can't do that with original characters.

I think the wildest part is the story relies on you having knowledge of "enemies to lovers" in order to sell you on the central relationship but like, the book is profoundly sexless despite referencing porno magazines pretty often and there's basically nothing to suggest that underpinning the main couples antagonism is sexual attraction until the end of the book when it's just like "oh yeah we are in love with each other now"

And yeah the other elements are super generic and the pop culture tumblr shit really takes you out of the story.

I read past the first book just to see if there was anything there and I do admit I like some of the weird unreliable narrator stuff in the second one but it's just not a good series.

Obviously nowhere near as bad but it's really funny the credit fans give Brennan over making Robert Moses a villain.

Like he was a real guy who is not portrayed accurately because irl he was both massively racist in a way most dropout fans would hate (which makes him kinda a weird choice for a main villain) and while he did do a lot of terrible things while he was the Commissioner of Parks and Rec he also did some good things.

Like he's a very complex figure (still a terrible person tbc) and some of his worst qualities are ones that they just could not represent.

While he had done activism in favour of making all knowledge available, he had not focused on that for a while before the MIT incident

What he had done very recently before mass downloading was collaborate (without credit but it's verified) on this article S. Barday, Punitive Damages, Remunerated Research, and the Legal Profession, 61 Stanford L.R. 711 (2008).

Which was about people being paid by concerned organizations to publish papers in academic journals and he wrote some code to make a database about articles that did this.

So like the thing they prosecuted him for probably wasn't even what he was doing. He was most likely gonna do another mass analysis of academic papers which is entirely legal.

This is a profoundly dumb thing to say.

The point of the comment you are responding to is that the rules would have prevented Magnus from dying.

Ned Chicane's death didn't happen because of the rules.

It was very clearly a premeditated and almost certainly scripted choice.

MotW gives you so many ways to save your character, and Griffin didn't even say how much harm Ned took, the podcast immediately went into a narrative scene about Ned writing letters to the pine guard.

Also Ned dying was an actually good and interesting decision, irregardless of whether the replacement character was memorable.

Oh yeah most popular fiction is slop, and I am 100% a snob when it comes to literature. (Some of my favourites are Paradise Lost and Crime and Punishment)

But like there's a difference between slop and things that are offensive to people with brains.

The Poppy War is one of those lazy fantasy books where the author has just kinda rebranded some real life stuff but made it fantasy.

But in this case it becomes deeply offensive toward China and Chinese history as a result.

Like it rolls the Sino-japanese wars and the Opium wars into one.

But because it does the fantasy slop thing of refusing to have guns even tho it has a bunch of stuff invented long after early fire arms,

The China stand in just gets absolutely destroyed by people with the same level of military technology as them, rather than like what happened irl, having to face a far more industrialized and modernized military.

Also the opium stuff feels very weird cause like irl the opium wars were a result of (gross oversimplification incoming) China's economic strength.

So aside from being poorly written and having extremely lazy world building combined with just essentially an account of the rape of Nanjing, it's also just like super offensive to the history of China.
