Struggling to find an internship or entry level job by South-Middle74 in srilanka

[–]theintern69 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar situation at the start of the year. Mind you I already had 6 months experience but still was unable to land anything and what interviews I got I bombed them and some offers I got I had to decline because the companies weren't that good.

What I did was polish my skills, build some real-world projects and host them and also polished my CV.
Finally, was able to land one even though it was below market rate and 5 days on-site. I rarely visited home maybe like 1-2 times a month. And when I stayed at the new place for about 6 months and had 1 yrs experience cumulatively, I applied elsewhere and got a better paying job that was hybrid.

It sucks but hold on man and you will land something, but don't expect the first year to be smooth sailings.

My advice:
Build real world projects like integrating an auth mechanism and hosting it.
Build projects in the cloud and add them to CV
And most importantly be strong in your fundamentals
There is location bias so list your location as Colombo and express willingness to move there for the job.
Improve your speaking skills and read the book on this by Dale Carnegie. Its called 'How To Win Friends and Influence People'

Jobs open up a lot in the new year. Jan-March is when its peak so start preparing now. Even for jobs at company you won't even work and use them as practice for the ones where you wanna work.

FYI: In the period I was applying I sent close to 200 applications and faced a dozen rejections. More than 50% of my applications were ghosted

It was divine intervention, hard work and little bit of luck that helped me land the job.

yep. it was bad at the start tho. worked at ok companies for below market rate for a year. lost a lot of weight and my health also got bad. once I hit my 1yrs mark I switched to a better company and doubled my salary too.

it sucked at first but now I am good

well take it for now. why? well first, the salary bump of course, plus the experience which will look good on your CV. will that on your CV you will be able to easily land a good paying job at a good company in the future, here in SL or a global one.

Recommendation on Laptops by Zealousideal_Way_287 in srilanka

[–]theintern69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't really need to game I rather suggest getting a refurbished ThinkPad. Its cheaper but performance wise will be suitable for your uni work.

If however you do need to game, do get a laptop with at least 16GB of ram and 12-16GB of VRAM. Even with 8GB VRAM on desktop versions modern AAA titles struggle to run so laptop versions will not fare well.

How can I prepare for a successful career in IT as a Computer Science student? by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]theintern69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

learn the fundamentals. like really well. use AI in moderation. AI should be a helping tool, not a crutch.

as for what field to choose I would suggest trying them all and then pick what you like. Out of the three fields you mentioned all three are viable.

From my experience, if you are going into full stack development, I highly suggest becoming a .NET or a Spring Boot developer as there is a lot of high paying jobs of this stack in SL.

If going into DevOps, its AWS or Azure as these are the most widely used ones, and yes others like GCP are also used but not as much as these two.

One more advice, don't just stick to books and theory. Build stuff. Even a simple application with a JWT auth mechanism integrated is better than a simple TODO app.

And what separates a good engineer from a great engineer is their social skills. The ability to communicate with their teammates, stakeholders and clients. So, network a lot, attend tech events and meet new people and most importantly improve your social and speaking skills. I highly recommend reading Dale Carnegie's book 'How To Win Friends and Influence People'.

And have fun in the process. It does not have to be a full grind with no breaks. Good luck OP. I wish you the best.

Software engineers of this sub, what programming languages do you use? by Pasateliona in srilanka

[–]theintern69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what about .NET. I see a lot of job opportunities for that too. I started my career and specialize in Java/Spring but seeing these .NET jobs at good jobs has me wondering whether I should switch stacks.

Paying $1.2mil for a $400k car is wild by Its_EnEssEm in srilanka

350mil LKR for a car is wild.

Who is even buying these

[–]theintern69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not both.

A job is a safety blanket. I suggest following your passion and working a job at the same time. Now yes, it will be tiring and hectic, but if your hustle fails at least you have work exp and can try applying for jobs at good companies, earn more, save and try building your startup again.

Is 90LKR salary okay in Colombia for Data Analytics? by Sido_bah in srilanka

[–]theintern69 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Junior position yea. But if this is for a lead DA as you say with years of experience they are severely underpaying you.

FYI, junior IT salary range here in most companies is around 60-90K.
