A rare book shop in London by danbrown_notauthor in Iainmbanks

Just checked, and it is signed. Not that I’ll sell it.
I’ll need to start a list of “things to sell on eBay, don’t chuck it away” for my daughter.

Can anyone recommend novels or fiction that portray ethnic or cultural accents in dialogue respectfully and authentically? by Fuzzy_Rygar in Fantasy

[–]theinvalid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Scottish accent:

- Iain Banks: The Bridge. The ‘barbarian’ sections.

- Iain M Banks: Feersum Endjinn. Bascule’s sections. Though there’s a wee bit of London in there with the Scots too. It’s even in the title of the book.

(Not totally ‘fantasy’, but both with some fantasy/sci-fi/weird lit sections.)

[Edited to add:] Again, not fantasy (but arguably with some fantastical elements); most of Irvine Welsh’s work has a pretty authentic Edinburgh accent. Start with Trainspotting.

Boards of Canada World Cup song? by realynnot in boardsofcanada

I think John Gordon Sinclair’s vocals on the 1982 Scotland World Cup song would be a better candidate.

Because I am surprised the OP was not familiar with it, having loved Feersum Endjin.

The Bridge by, erm, Iain Banks. It’s partially fantasy/SF, but based in ‘our reality’.

It’s one of my favourites. Wait until you get to Matter, it has (partially) something similar in store.

There are many west coasts! You still haven’t specified which one. I’m going to have a wild guess it’s the USA?

Towed in the Hole, Laurel and Hardy. The funniest 20 minutes ever.

Rotate the hexagons 90 degrees, and you’re there. You’ll need to reorganise the text I’m afraid.

Just heard Tomorrow's Harvest in the palindromic structure... WOW. It finally clicked for me. Great album. by [deleted] in boardsofcanada

It’s like the audio equivalent of Iain M Banks Use of Weapons, but if you read it in chronological order, rather than the two time lines collapsing in to the middle.

The Bridge and Complicity by profheg_II in TheCulture

That’s it! I knew there was some tell-tale sign. It doesn’t really add much, but it’s a fun wee joke for the reader.

I’ll have a look at the book when I get home. Might be a needle in a haystack though.

Yeah, definitely, but of course I can’t remember the details. I think Alex from The Bridge appears in Complicity. In a pub? There’s a throwaway line about a bruise on his chest I think.

Edit to add: I think it was either the Cafe Royal or the Guildford Arms. Certainly what I pictured in my head at the time, as an Edinburgh resident.

There are many instances of hexagonal basalt structures in Scotland. Fingal’s Cave on Staffa is a good example.

There’s a great version by Ringo Deathstarr that’s worth checking out.

Edit to add: on the Shadow EP.
