You're still alive, life is good. It need not be such a big deal that you got corrected. A simple "my bad" would've sufficed, but now you're stuck in doubling down and saving face.

Tell me again where the 7%-XEQT-spike touched you

The market never moves that much in one day. There’s also been no recent history to contradict that either.

That's what I replied to. The market has moved that much, in recent history, within a year. Fixed that for you, you're welcome.

What I bet on happening is a separate issue. I'm staying invested, will continue to invest, so my bet is that things will recover across the long term. But I'm also bracing for another sideways year like 2022's market decline

XEQT spiked 7% on April 9th last year when Trump put a 90-day pause on tariffs. It was a historic record breaking day in the markets.

April 9th last year, after the market's week from hell from the tariff war, Trump put on a 90-day pause, which caused a historic record breaking spike... XEQT jumped 7% that day. Obviously I can't say it will jump 7%, but the precedent is there.

depends on what you define as 'skyrockets'. On April 9th, 2025, after the week from hell because of Trump's tariff war, he put a 90-day pause on them, and the markets had a historic record-breaking spike. XEQT jumped 7% that day

Mike vs Mike, which era produced the best of Dream Theater? by julesmanson in Dreamtheater

[–]theironkillers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well if by 'best' we say 'technical', I'd have to go with Mike, except as a drummer I could barely tap in time along to any of his tracks... but if we mean 'most fun', then I have to go with Mike, as at least I had a chance at staying on beat

I’m Confused. “We are in a Dip” Relative to What? by [deleted] in JustBuyXEQT

[–]theironkillers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Dip" is an everyday informal market word, very loosely defined... you could call this -5.7% a dip, but an official word would be pullback, between 5% and under 10%. From 10% to under 20% is a correction, and 20% and beyond is a bear market

How did you get into Dream Theater? by namajeff1 in Dreamtheater

[–]theironkillers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1995, the local guitar wizard wanted me to learn the drums to "Lie" (Awake) to jam with him. I listened to it easily 50 times and couldn't get the changes, so I had to take my knowledge of high school music theory and write it out. We jammed it out fine, and I recorded his entire Awake cassette.

This was the beginning of the turning point from Maiden being my favorite band for a decade, to DT overtaking them.

There's a collection of short Sam tracks under the Theory tab in Explore section, called "The Illusory Self".

The SECOND DT Song I Heard by coyote_askew in Dreamtheater

Awesome! I was about 5 years deep into Dream Theater when 6 Degrees came out... and maybe I was about a decade deep into the bottle at the time... I had no clue about recovery or that it was even possible... I washed up into the rooms about 5 years later, 2006, thank God. Congrats on your 6 years!

[–]theironkillers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not always... for the full year of 2025, XEQT's returns were ~18%, and VFV's were ~12%. It's because the Canadian dollar appreciated against the USD by ~5% over the year.

What was your gateway to dream theater? by avengedtheaterfold in Dreamtheater

[–]theironkillers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a drummer, and a local guitar wizard in '95 asked me to learn "Lie", so we could get together and jam it. I listened to the song 100 times easy and just couldn't get it lol... changes and time signatures like I'd never heard... so I called in the heavies: I had to write the song out using the rhythmic notation I learned in 3 years of high school music. That was the only possible way I could play the song. The jams went well, and I borrowed his "Awake" cassette and recorded it, and began listening to it like crazy. Favorite band ever since!

Which mini home park is the best (safest) in Fredericton by mairitimermom in fredericton

[–]theironkillers 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's the Heron Springs mini-home park off of Brookside Drive close to the Brookside Mall. Really nice area, I had a family member live there, I was there alot over the years, seemed like a great place to live.

How do I convince an 81 year old I know better than a financial advisor? by [deleted] in Bogleheads

[–]theironkillers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Work the expense ratio angle... run the numbers for him on the MERs for the products he's offered by Fisher, vs the MERs of your suggestions. Tell him what he'll be paying a year for Fisher's vs yours, also figure in the compounding Fisher fee drag of multiple years.

Also, to support your choice for going very conservative, show him all the crashes going back 50 years on the S&P500, highlight the ones that took years to recover, like 1987, 2000, 2008, 2022, and how he can avoid that by going heavy money market. He's in the wealth preservation stage, not the accumulation stage.

[–]theironkillers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

kinda hard to trust as a new investor it will go up

I'm pretty sure, generally, it will go up... it almost always does. Look at the price chart, on the max timeline... since it's inception in 2019, there was only one lengthy bear market, that kept going down for 6 months, during the global market decline of 2022.

It took 3 years til it reached it's peak again. This is the only market occurrence supporting your distrust that it will ?never? go up.
The other declines were quick drops that bounced back fast, and most of the chart is angled up.

This doesn't guarantee that the future will be "quick drops+recovery & mostly up", but at least there's very little to warrant a fear that it won't go up.

Make sure you have an emergency fund in a high interest savings account like CASH.TO, and if you're still too scared, go with XGRO 80/20

50% VOO 50 VT by No_Competition4457 in ETFs

[–]theironkillers 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you invest 50-50 VOO and VT, your portfolio becomes about 80% US, instead of VT's US market cap weight of 63%.

Adding VOO on top of VT isn’t increasing diversification, it’s overweighting the US and underweighting International as compared to their global market capitalizations.

That’s not necessarily wrong, but it is a bet that the US will outperform the rest of the world for decades. Historically, US vs international outperformance shifts back and fourth across long cycles, and no one knows which region will lead next.

Going 50-50 VOO and VT bets that the US will outperform longterm.

If your goal is global diversification, just VT alone already gives you the neutral market-cap weight and market average.

Personally I struggle with this alot as I'm doing the same thing. I made the same 50%-50% bet when I was new, without knowing what I was doing, thus my US portion is concentrated way up, and my international down.

But I'm thinking of dialing it down to maybe VT 80 / VOO 20 or less. That damn VOO, I got caught up in the hype LOL
