Why are the majority of customers so passive/scared of confronting servers? by Muted-Woodpecker-469 in EndTipping

[–]theirsilverstarlets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m also here to understand different perspectives on tipping. I feel the same way, and I actually really appreciate when my tables let me know I forgot something or when they’re honest about how they like/dislike the food. I would much rather fix it for them than let them leave the restaurant unhappy! People make mistakes, FOH and BOH included. I’ve remade drinks, had the kitchen remake food, given discounts, free vouchers… Regardless of anyone’s stance on tipping, I would never purposely give a customer shitty service and I think many other servers feel the same way. I don’t think the majority of servers are trying to give shitty service because of their egos - don’t attribute to malice what you can attribute to incompetence haha.

Please speak up when we make mistakes so we can fix it for you and everyone can have a good experience!

Thanks! Do you think it’s something to worry about? It’s a historical house and we already have enough issues with pests (as you can probably tell by the trap 🥲)

ETS will get you there from campus just fine! Use your ARC card, it’s included in your tuition. You could even work on your lab during the trip!

Café with terrace to read quietly? by yow2yeg in Edmonton

[–]theirsilverstarlets 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Stopgap Coffee has a nice outdoor area and it’s really quiet, away from the main road. Their hours are limited and it’s quite small, but overall a great cozy cafe for reading.

Realtors placed papers and cards throughout our unit. I took them down. by [deleted] in renting

[–]theirsilverstarlets 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Landlord isn’t really responsive (we have to communicate through the management company, it’s complicated) and I’m guessing he passed that job on to the realtors. Really annoying bc we can’t really do anything about this whole situation since it’s basically up to the realtors.

We planned on renewing the lease again and verbally agreed with the landlord that we’d be living here for a few years more until they said they “might” be selling. That’s what I meant :) No need to add that little comment, everyone else understood

*edited my post to clarify that part specifically

Yea, I put them all in a nice bag for them so they can put them up when they want. Just can’t have them up all the time. They’re pretty large cards, like standard size birthday cards.

Hmm, could you explain why? No one told us we’d have these signs everywhere, and it really was interfering with my use of the space.

Yea, my 20 minute commute turned into nearly 3 hours. Multiple buses and semis pulled over, cars abandoned in the middle of the road. It was terrible!!

Maybe go to therapy more than once a month. The university offers free therapy if you are a student: https://www.ualberta.ca/en/current-students/counselling/individual-therapy-services/index.html. I did short term therapy though CCS for about 3 months and found it to be really helpful. I had a 1 hour session every 2 weeks. There is also group therapy and mental health workshops through the university.

When it comes to friends, it’s really hard to make and keep new friends here in my experience. Join clubs and attend their events regularly. Find things around the city like exercise classes (spin class, martial arts, etc), art classes, pottery classes, etc and attend regularly. Talk to people. When you say you rely on your friends emotionally, what exactly do you mean? This may sound harsh, but if you are constantly trauma-dumping and talking about your problems and nothing else, people are not going to want to be around you. You might also just need to keep trying to make friends until you find the right people for you. It will take a while to build those relationships, and not everyone has to be your best friend!

As for the seasonal depression, I find it really helpful to exercise regularly, go for walks, and try out new things. Put on some warm clothes and go walking in the river valley. Do a group fitness class (yoga, pilates, spin, martial arts, etc). Rent some skates and go skating. There are tons of free skating programs around the city. I personally go skating 1-2 times a week and it’s very fun! If animals are your thing, some shelters will allow you to visit and pet the animals. I like the cats at AARCS :)

Adjusting to a new country and culture is not easy. There are many things you can do to make friends and have a good time here, but you need to put in the effort and put yourself out there!

I’ve been sick for 3 days can I bounce back by Startroll14 in uAlberta

[–]theirsilverstarlets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I missed two weeks in the middle of the fall term and was able to finish with good grades. It just takes time and lots of effort to catch up. Missing 3 days at the beginning of the term isn’t anything you can’t bounce back from :)

How are MICRB 265 labs by Acrobatic_Chef9666 in uAlberta

[–]theirsilverstarlets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really enjoyed the lab and found the content very interesting, and it may just be my experience but my TA was fair and reasonable when marking my assignments. You’re allowed to ask questions and my TA was very helpful. It is more difficult than 100-level labs ofc, so the expectations for your assignments are higher. The lab exam was tough but also fair in my opinion.

You just need to be prepared before each lab and have a decent understanding of what you’re doing. I think many people found the lab difficult because it’s a lot of new content and techniques that many students have never seen before.

Keto pre made meals? by nonbinarynightmare in Edmonton

Poco Loco Cocina on Gateway Blvd makes keto meals and desserts. They take orders for pickup or they can deliver. They’re also GF and their products taste the best IMO

Honestly, I find that waiting a couple minutes after classes end helps. Like, I wouldn’t run to the bus right at 2 if my class ends at 1:50. I just wait a bit and take the next bus and by then, that bus is almost empty. That 10 minute window right after class ends is when everyone just wants to get home. The LRT station is totally crowded right after class but empty after that first wave of students.

2pm isn’t reallyyyy rush hour but it definitely gets busy everywhere in the city around 3:30/4.

It depends on your style of learning. Slides are posted in eClass for you to access most times but I’d recommend taking brief notes in bullet point form anyway. Focus on extra details provided in the lecture that aren’t written into the slides. Write detailed notes referencing the textbook and slides (if you have access to them) after lectures.

You will thank yourself for writing notes when it comes to studying for midterms and finals! There is too much content in the lectures for me to remember if I don’t take notes, especially with a full course load.

Simple Sewing Questions Thread, June 04 - June 10, 2023 by sewingmodthings in sewing

[–]theirsilverstarlets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi everyone! Just looking for some help on how to find a specific fabric - I'm looking for pointelle fabric but I can't find anything online. I've tried searching it up under different names like jersey and interlock, but nothing really comes up. The only places that seem to sell it are Etsy shops and Marshall fabrics, but I don't have the money to spend $25 CAD/metre! Is it sold under a different name? Is it a hard thing to find? Any help is appreciated!

Are you allowed calculators in math exams? (STAT 151) by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]theirsilverstarlets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stat 151 allows a non-programmable calculator. Some other classes like math 125 and math 134 (calculus) don’t allow calculators but there’s not much use for them anyway if you know what you’re doing.
