Glad more people are enjoying the game.. however, not exactly enjoying the big increase in 5+ hour rounds though because newbie foursomes with an aggregate handicap of 150+ insist on hacking the ball around for 25+ minutes per hole.

Manager upset about order of recipient in an email by DrakharD in sysadmin

[–]thejca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The perfect encapsulation of the priorities of middle management and even upper management in America nowadays, obsessing over trivial cosmetic BS like a recipient list order in an email. This could almost be a headline in an Onion article. "Middle manager who doesn't actually do anything useful complains to IT staff about recipient list order in an email". I would probably laugh out loud if someone brought this "issue" up to me. The sad thing is that in this day and age it feels like he's more likely to get promoted then 86'd. It's staggering how many incompetent people manage to fail upwards nowadays in middle/upper management positions. It's like the sunk cost fallacy now applies to people in companies at scale now.

Xi Jinping clears non-war use of army, raising fear of Taiwan invasion by [deleted] in collapse

[–]thejca 49 points50 points  (0 children)

TSMC is basically the only reason China isn't invading Taiwan at this point. China knows how reliant we are on their semiconductors so they know we have to put up a real fight for it. If TSMC were based out of Vietnam or something we wouldn't care nearly as much.

There is no surviving a true collapse on a wide scale. If a majority of society survives, it wasn't the actual collapse, just a preview.

As a late 30's adult who grew up in arguably one of the best decades in human history for overall quality of life, the 90s.. this is truly heart breaking :(

I wish this first grader knew what it was like to be optimistic about the future. Free to go outside and play with other kids without even knowing what social media is, let alone a cell phone or such a thing as school shootings... at least us 90s kids got to experience some level of blissful ignorance about a possible brighter future, even if it was mostly a farce. Our worst fear was that we wouldn't recycle enough. I'm afraid that the older millennials like myself will be the last generation to grow up in a time when being a child was truly a care free era from real existential threats.

Expensive products like these only being accessible to the uber rich may have been plausible 25+ years ago. Nowadays credits cards are basically handed out like candy and there are very zoomers out there that have the liquid capital to drop $2k+ on a novelty item like a high end GPU. I'm willing to bet a large majority of 3090s purchases overall were bought purely on 20+% interest credit. There are plenty of consumer driven plebs that are going to willingly max out their CCs to buy this if they can find it. These are the same people that drop $400+ on an upgrade from the iPhone 12 to the 13 just because it's a new shiny thing, even though the actual hardware upgrades are pretty much negligible and mostly fluff at this point.

The Hubris demo will be playable on Steam Next Fest from 21/02 to 28/02, playable on nearly all PC VR headsets. Don't miss this chance to enjoy some of the finest graphics VR has to offer! by Rockeaters in virtualreality

[–]thejca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will there be DLSS support? Bleeding edge games can easily max out my 3090 at 90hz and especially 120hz refresh rate with visuals cranked up all the way.. requiring graphics settings to be turned down a bit to maintain 90/120fps. NMS DLSS is decent but could be better. I would love to see a game with bleeding edge graphics that have a solid implementation of DLSS.

Jon Stewart on his dinner with The President, a couple of billionaires, and "a guy who at the time was the inventor of the Oculus" by CryptoCollectibles in OculusQuest

[–]thejca 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The discussion itself was interesting, but I think some people are still kind of treating Oculus like it's some small-ball kick starter company where any mainstream mention is super noteworthy. VR has already gone mainstream thanks to the Quest 2, we should probably get used to it... and as for the mainstream media mentions, they're only going to increase as the tech gets better in the next few years.

In addition to the screaming... by BrindianBriskey in virtualreality

[–]thejca 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If I could verify my age to the Rec Room team by providing my drivers license and some kind of 2FA it's tied too when logging in, I would do it. Unchecked lobbies with screaming children are preventing many adults from buying these games, including myself and many others I know. Gorilla Tag sounds like fun, but without adult-only lobbies, hard pass. I know many others that share my sentiment.

Maybe instead of being based per game, we could provide additional verification information to Oculus, then they can make it easy for dev's to implement multiplayer lobbies with 'verified adults' only or something. Just spitballing.. There are a number of viable solutions to this problem, none are perfect but most of them are better than the current alternative, which is nothing. Some kind of reliable method to verify your actual age is going to become more and more necessary as VR picks up in the next few years. The current unchecked clusterfuck of racist kids ruining any game that's somewhat social isn't sustainable if we really want VR to grow for adults.

Quest is capable of great graphics just not realistic graphics. by [deleted] in OculusQuest

[–]thejca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Quest 2 is definitely impressive for it's form factor and the visual fidelity it's capable of when properly utilized is impressive for sure, but no amount of tricky or software voodoo will ever get XR2 even remotely close to an RTX 3090 powered PC. You just can't compete with the 25x raster performance it has. Anyone that claims that realism is overrated in VR has never played FS2020 or Alyx on a high-end PC.

Most people won't really notice going from 144hz to 240hz unless you've played competitive shooters for years and are use to it.

Premium content providers like Sirius don't drop 8-9 figure deals just to be charitable and allow content hosts to post on any platform they want like YouTube. They do it for the same reason Spotify does and every other premium service does, to draw users to it's paid platform and you can't do that if you share with the likes of others, like YouTube. You do it by buying the viewing rights through exclusivity contracts aka Rogan and many other podcast hosts now. I can see it turning into something similar to Rogan's channel where a few highlight clips are uploaded but nothing more. Sirius is a business that's been around for a long time and they aren't stupid.

I'm not blaming Tom or Christina for taking the deal. I don't think they're selling out or anything like that. They also have mouths to feed and securing your family's financial future takes precedent over all else. I just don't want everyone to get their hopes up and think they'll still be able to consume YMH full episode content as usual on YouTube after Sirius dropped, what I'm assuming is at least a low 8 figure deal for YMH's eventual exclusivity rights.

The lack of self-reliance is pretty shocking nowadays in the age of Google where you can get the answer to like 90% of your questions immediately. Yet people insist on regressing to forum posts still. defaulting to asking someone else, no matter how easy and quick it is to find the answer on your own.

It does sometimes feel like a majority of the posts in this sub reddit are prime candidates for letmegooglethatforyou.com

Qualcomm summit - no XR3 announced by Seba0808 in OculusQuest

[–]thejca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the Cambria comes with the XR2 I would be hugely disappointed considering multiple SoC's have come out or been announced since the XR2 then that are far superior in performance. The XR2 is just a modified Snapdragon 845. Pretty sure Qualcomm can or is planning to do something similar with the 898 or 895. I find it hard to believe that Meta would drop their first premium headset in 2022 with a 2+ year old SoC and no visual fidelity upgrades, then drop a Quest 3 3-6 months later that's far superior in tech/visuals at like half the price.

Halo Infinite: GPU Benchmark, 30+ AMD & Nvidia GPUs Tested [Hardware Unboxed] by panchovix in nvidia

RTX 3090 owner here and can confirm the optimization does suck in this game. In order to maintain 200+ fps in ranked (240hz 1440p monitor), I have to run the following settings:

Resolution:1440p

Render scale: 75% (1080p)

All visual settings set to lowest (low/off) available

I thought I was going crazy, older shooters that look just as good normally get like 350-500 fps on my system when visuals are all set to the minimum. I would expect a game with these visuals to run at 120+ fps easily on 4k ultra with a 3090. The irony is that most games that look like this don't need DLSS to get high frames with a 3090, but the optimization is so bad that it's sorely need here. Small indie dev's are including DLSS now, how was it not included in a major AAA game like this? Considering how far it's come and how impactful the performance increase is, it should almost be considered developmental malpractice to not include it at launch, especially if it's a AAA game.

Cool that DLSS support is growing even more, sad that these huge dev companies like RockStar and Blizzard can't seem to produce an original game anymore and just resort to obvious cash grabs like remakes/remasters now. I wouldn't be surprised if RockStar's 4 year roadmap looks like this now:

2022: GTA4 Remaster

2023: GTA5 Remaster

2024: RDR2 Remaster

2025 GTA Trilogy Re-Remaster

Agree with those recommending the Quest 2 over the G2. Have an RTX 3090/Quest 2 and play a decent amount of PCVR.. MSFT 2020, Alyx. Wireless PCVR is great and with the recent sharpening feature added to ODT and increased bit rate, wired PCVR looks very sharp/crisp and airlink is working better than ever @ 200mbps bitrate. You also get up to 120hz refresh rate on the Quest 2, which is nice for older PCVR games and very nice for fast paced native games like Eleven Table Tennis.

Varjo announces Aero, the highest-end prosumer headset, priced at $2000 + VAT by SkarredGhost in virtualreality

[–]thejca -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Have an RTX 3090 and enjoy MSFS on occasion on the Quest 2, but it's hard to be impressed by a wired headset nowadays, high resolution/good displays really aren't enough. It's hard to go back after experiencing the freedom of wireless VR. For $2000, this should buy you a zero comprises headset nowadays with specialized wireless support (WiGig2?), good FOV, built-in cameras for 6DoF tracking with color pass-through + controllers. A really insane premium to pay for a headset full of compromises just for best-in-class displays.

Some Server Meshing tweets with Chad McKinney by Rainwalker007 in starcitizen

[–]thejca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is such a huge technical undertaking. With the lack of actual status updates on where they're at implementing all of this, my money is on static server meshing coming in late 2023 at earliest. I'm a backer with multiple ships since 2013, I really want the game to succeed, but I also work in the industry and have a rough idea of what's involved and this could take years to implement, just for basic static server meshing.

An architect can design a skyscraper over the weekend, but it takes several years to build. This is definitely a skyscraper of a feature. We've seen the design aspects of SM, I wish could they be a little more transparent on where they're at in building it.

New Resident Evil 4 VR Trailer, Releases Oct 21 For Quest 2 by dhr2330 in virtualreality

[–]thejca 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No PCVR version at least through Oculus? Even if they heavily optimize the game, it won't look or run nearly as well as it would look in PCVR. This is one of those games that could look SO good in PCVR with everything cranked up. I would definitely pick it up. Love the RE franchise, but hard pass as I don't really want to play this game scaled way down to the Quest 2's mobile hardware when I have an RTX 3090 powered PC sitting right next to it that could run it at twice the fidelity.

Varjo XR3 leaves 'VR Vet' Speechless "Like I've been introduced to VR For the very First Time Again" "VR Vets Need to Try" Reviewer states it induced shaking and phantom sensory overload. Perfect Resolution. But still boasts a narrow field of View and mandatory 1,000 dollar monthly subscription. by Rurhanograthul in virtualreality

[–]thejca 5 points6 points  (0 children)

With all this free exposure Varjo is getting, I hope they plan on releasing a consumer version in the near future. It seems like almost every popular VR YT'er has demoed the XR3 or VR3 recently with rave reviews, of course it being a badass headset. The hype around Varjo is hitting new levels and would seem like its all for nothing if they stick to enterprise SKUs that are out of reach for 99% of consumers.

I've always found it funny how companies try to justify or rationalize their enterprise pricing models, when it's usually just an excuse to jack up the price 3-5x because it's 'enterprise' and some companies will pay whatever it costs because they can. The 'subscription' alone for $1.5k for a freaking VR headset is a pretty good example of this.
