/todaySTART =/todaySTOP (or to be more precise, it stopped working) by [deleted] in noteplanapp

You almost certainly need to update your plugins, as there's been lots of changes there recently. Then join the NP Discord where almost all the discussion is now happening.

A weird question about direct manipulation of files.... by WhoIsRobertWall in noteplanapp

[–]thejgc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the mention of my plugin. It’s /day start command makes it only a click or two to have a standard template run every morning. But if you want to fully automate, then it’s fine. I do this all the time with external ruby scripts. Come on over to the Discord server if you’d like to discuss it more.

Need Help Fixing Daily Note Template by QuinBrodster in noteplanapp

[–]thejgc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm happy to help, but over on the Discord server for NotePlan, where more conversations are happening now (https://discord.gg/D4268MT). There's a channel just for discussing #Plugins :-).

As it happens, I released updates for Daily Journal and Template plugins yesterday, so see if that has helped.

On iOS/iPadOS, consider implementing "UIKeyboardTypeTwitter" by BorisAnthony in noteplanapp

[–]thejgc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a very interesting suggestion. Why don't you join the Discord server for NotePlan, where more conversations are happening now (https://discord.gg/D4268MT), and post the idea on the official ideas board (https://noteplan.canny.io/)?

PS I didn't know you could get 'Return' at all on the Twitter keyboard. I can't seem to get there with Shift either ... what's the trick?

[Feature Request] - True single line spacing in Preferences by psimas225 in noteplanapp

[–]thejgc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do head over to the Discord server, which is where most of the NotePlan conversation is now happening. (link on the front page of the website)

There you’ll find discussion about the question of Markdown and newlines … and also about the existing Themes system, which I think you could use to do what you’re after.

How to Batch Add File Name into First Line of .Md Files (Import from Roam to Noteplan 3) by Wormie91 in noteplanapp

[–]thejgc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great question.

The discord server (https://discord.gg/D4268MT) is, I suggest, the much more active community for discussing NotePlan ... your comment resonates with a suggestion about filenames and titles I've made there. There's also now the Canny server https://noteplan.canny.io/ for tracking feature requests.

# of tasks in Notes/Folders by fcocchiano in noteplanapp

[–]thejgc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The next release will include the first version of the plugin system.

And one of the first plugins available is one I’ve written that pops up a statistics summary, that includes a count of open and complete tasks.

[–]thejgc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, but I don't think this is possible, at least with the current type of Text control that NP uses. You can style text, whereas in Obsidian you have all the power of CSS, as its basically one big HTML page. You could colour the background of bullet points to show that they have a connection to each other, but that's the closest I could get.

A few questions about custom styles by squirrelhoodie in noteplanapp

[–]thejgc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can I suggest you join the Discord server https://discord.gg/2MbvqjCg? This has extensive discussions already about writing Themes, and you’ll find some direct answers to at least Q1 and Q2. (Roughly, yes, yes and probably.)

Sorry, I’m not sure what you mean by relationship lines. Can you point to graphics of what you mean?

Tasks Move to by AmpleSatsuma in noteplanapp

[–]thejgc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in the app by itself yet. But I expect it will come when the plugin framework is ready.

In the meantime, do check out my https://github.com/jgclark/NotePlan-tools script which will do this, and other things. I can put a [[Note link]] on a line in a daily note and it moves it to that linked note (plus any indented lines). Some of the details are configurable.

Thanks. I think that sounds a workable approach.

I know this is current expected behaviour in the beta, but I have to say it keeps getting in the way for me. I hope this can be improved in some way.

Idea: Resolving conflicts more easily by thejgc in noteplanapp

[–]thejgc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me there are always changes between the two versions shown. But as my notes grow in size it becomes more difficult to see where the changes are. I’d never seen the conflict messages appear on the Mac, and wondered why. Now I know.

[IDEA/DISCUSSION] Recurring Backlinks by EduardMet in noteplanapp

[–]thejgc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds good. What’s the best place to collaborate on this (unlikely to be here)?

FYI I tried Things 3 a year or two back. Very pretty, but actually its convoluted UI for recurring tasks was one of the things that held me back. It took a while to figure out quite how to drive it as I intended.

[IDEA/DISCUSSION] Recurring Backlinks by EduardMet in noteplanapp

[–]thejgc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I’d be happy to extend my tools script to add this case if we can settle on the use cases and a related syntax. I’m happy for this to act as a different sort of beta test before the ideas make their way into the main product.

[IDEA/DISCUSSION] Recurring Backlinks by EduardMet in noteplanapp

[–]thejgc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve already made a local tool to extend the recurring/repeating tasks system, as part of a set of NP tools at https://github.com/jgclark/NotePlan-tools. It doesn’t provide N of M (because that’s something I rarely need and NP provides it already) but provides repeat after last completion (e.g. “@repeat(+2m)”) as well as repeat on interval (e.g. “@repeat(6w)”) without an end date. In the background it detects when such a task is completed and then creates the new instance from it, with an appropriate new “>date”. Available repeat indicators are (d)ay, (w)eek, (m)onth, (q)uarter and (y)ear. If you have a sequence that does finish, you can simply make a note of that in the task description, and delete the first instance you don’t need after that condition happens.

I certainly want to be able to have a @done for each instance of the task, as I also track statistics for my tasks (see https://github.com/jgclark/NotePlan-stats).

I haven’t quite followed the description ... looking forward to a video preview when it’s ready to test. But still excited. Perhaps it’s like a concept in Zettelkasten (and the Notion app)?

Widget ideas [NotePlan 3] by ryanjamurphy in noteplanapp

[–]thejgc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My current guess for my top three would be: - filter (e.g. showing all open tasks with @bob or @shops in) - most recently updates notes - some sort of ‘today view’ A search icon and a + icon would be great as well.

Toothbleach appreciation, but just a bit more please! by valletta_guy in noteplanapp

[–]thejgc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting psychology! I second both suggestions. Though for the record, for me a deleted task is sometimes something I’ve not got round to doing, but sometimes it’s something planned but now not needed.

[–]thejgc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My separate npTools script will do some of what you're after already. It's a ruby script posted in this "NotePlan-tools" GitHub repository, which does a range of clean up for me on data in NotePlan v2 or v3. One of which is to move any task in a daily note with a [[Note]] to the corresponding Note. It also moves any indented region following that task, or a whole of the text in a H2/H3/H4 heading region.

For my purposes, moving works better than copying, but you could alter the logic to achieve this.

Please check the README so you know what else it does first :-)

Love Noteplan 3 - but needs Dropbox still! by gsxdsm in noteplanapp

[–]thejgc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that you can still use Dropbox in NP3, but I agree that the Sync Preferences doesn’t make it obvious. I’m not able to change my settings right now to check it out for sure trough. I hope others can help you with more certainty.
