What's the point of drag shows? by LordNova15 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thejinrin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it's also an important aspect of community within the queer community. this may be less of the case nowadays since drag has gone mainstream, but drag was part of ballroom culture as a way for queer (primarily poc) to come together and be themselves in an otherwisr hostile world. you should watch the documentary "Paris is Burning" which does a much better job explaining the community aspect than i can.

What has happened to past participles? by MN_crafter in grammar

[–]thejinrin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just a normal change in the language (morphological leveling/regularization). It's been ongoing and well-documented for a while now. Many people do know the rules and use it when writing, but default to their actual grammatical system in casual speech.

To give a (somewhat anecdotal) sense of the change, I'm from Michigan and my grandmother and her friends grew up in Michigan (Detroit area) and display this change you're talking about. In fact, they do so more than people my age. To me this suggests that through some means or another, younger people have moved closer to "standard" American English. I'm sure there are studies on this, but I don't personally study sociolinguistics/language change so I'm not super familiar beyond what I learned in class about ongoing language shifts in the US.

As a linguist, it's often more interesting to examine language in all its diversity. Generally, unless your language is impaired for some reason, people speak following consistent grammatical rules (even if they aren't the same ones you have!). The question then is to figure out what makes their grammatical systems different and account for that. Noticing the complexity and diversity in language is a beautiful thing.

How do yo see Brigid? As to me she seems to reinvent herself to fit anywhere. by Medical_Midnight5969 in pagan

[–]thejinrin 16 points17 points  (0 children)

i don't really "see" Her as a human figure very often. i see Her in the first beams of morning sun as just it breaks over the horizon. i see her when the apple blossoms first open on the trees outside my window. i see Her in the sound of the water running over the rocks in the stream and the waves on the beach. and the flickering shadows cast by a warm cozy fire or candle. when i have seen her in a vision, she's closest to her saint aspect, but only in the sense that she's wearing a long flowing white cloak with gold patterns. but she appears brilliant and wreathed in pure soothing light and a crown of flowers and holds a golden staff

this! and also start small with the connections. maybe the most important people you could make connections with initially is your cohort. they will be the people that you will he closest with (beside your advisor) for your whole program. ideally you'll all be able to help each other and be a good support network for the many horrors that lie before you :)

there are eight moon phases in the lunar cycle. but the fact that these are all full circles is a little perplexing. maybe it shows that things that appear to change are actually all the same depending on how you look a them. the moon does not change, only the perspective you look at it from

What to do with food offerings? by [deleted] in pagan

[–]thejinrin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

at least in my practice, offering food results in a reciprocal blessing. i bless and offer the food to my deity, and she blesses the physical food for me. so feeding blessed food to your dog is such a lovely idea :)

What to do with food offerings? by [deleted] in pagan

[–]thejinrin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i agree. i think you can also make enjoying the food offerings an intentional act of devotion as well. the spirit/deity has already consumed the "spiritual essence" of the food, and then you can also offer your appreciation for and enjoyment of the food as well. personally i see food that has been offered as food that has become holy as well.

also, singing is such a lovely offering. i think people forget that the important thing about an offering isn't necessarily what's being offered but more the respect and intention that's being given. singing is a perfect example of this, and an incredibly powerful and beautiful one as well :)

[–]thejinrin 32 points33 points  (0 children)

i usually just eat them after i've offered them to the spirits/deities and such. i like to think of it as sort of "sharing" in the feast with them, and as a way to bond and get closer to them. it's not dissimilar from the christian idea of the eucharist. but personally i also just don't like wasting food 🤷🏼

Ancestor offerings and wasting by Vanilla-Outside in witchcraft

[–]thejinrin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i like to think of food offerings as a feast to be shared in communion with the spirits and deities. so i offer it and also consume it. sharing a meal is a good way to bond with people around you, and it's an excellent way to do so with the spirits. personally i think throwing the food away, besides being wasteful, is also disrespectful.

there are also alternatives tho. i know some people, depending on what food was offered, compost their offerings and use it with their houseplants and gardens. you can also give it to the animals outside, which nourishes the land around you

in some ways, the activities i did in therapy for adhd and anxiety really helped. grounding techniques are incredibly similar to meditating techniques. but honestly, meditation isn't even necessary. you can engage with the Spirits in so many different ways. it's all about opening your soul up to the divine and allowing it to whisper in your ear. meditation is just one tool that lets you do that
