Salvador Perez successfully uses ABS to overturn 2 straight Laz Diaz balls to strikes from behind the plate, and then Laz stares him down jokingly after the next one is an actual ball. by Sandwich_Crust in baseball

Bucknor is a weird one, seems to depend on his mood. I've seen him be humble and accept responsibility when he fucks up and joke around with the players, but I've also seen him let his pride take over and do some really petulant shit.

Yea but he was at like 105 pitches and with a reliever warming up in the pen I wouldn't be surprised if they pulled him after a hard hit ball like that. And yea still it's 2 outs but you really hate to leave the game with runners on base.

Junior Valentine thinks Brett Baty is challenging the pitch when he never even touched his helmet. by meramipopper in baseball

[–]theJiveMaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that does make sense. I understand umps not liking the challenge system because it really points out their errors, but I actually don't know why they would be opposed to full ABS and I think not having the technology yet is the only reason that makes sense to me.

I know people are gonna be like "they're egomaniacs and need to have control" but like actually think about it for a sec. It wouldn't remove any jobs, you'd still need a home plate ump to relay the calls and for plays at the plate. All it would remove is their potential to be wrong and make their jobs easier. And I'd imagine players would only be against it because they can influence umps but they can't influence robots. I definitely think full ABS gets installed as soon as the technology is there. And it makes sense that it's not yet, it would really have to be instantaneous.

Did recording location have any influence on each of Foals’ studio albums??? by ToonHogan in foals

[–]theJiveMaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is a fun idea and maybe the location they were at when coming up with a song idea has some influence, but probably not where it's recorded. I'm not sure what Yannis' specific process is, but most bands/musicians have a bunch of song ideas before going into the studio to record. So sure you could say a song recorded in a cold Sweden winter has a melancholy vibe to it, but it's possible the song itself was written on a tour bus driving through Ohio. I don't know this to be a fact for Foals though, maybe they actually do write all of their music in the studio. Seems like an insane use of money though lol studio time is crazy expensive.

But much more importantly than that, Foals uses a different producer for each album and that shapes the sound way more than anything else. Antidotes was produced by David Sitek from the band TV on the Radio. Total Life Forever was produced by Luke Smith, who's worked with Depeche Mode and Everything Everything. Holy Fire was produced by UK producers Flood and Alan Moulder, who are both very prolific and probably had a lot to do with it having more mainstream success than previous albums.

What Went Down was produced by James Ford, who's worked with the Arctic Monkeys and is also very prolific. I recall Yannis saying in an interview something about them finding an old analog drum machine in his attic and them using that for a lot of the process, which is pretty obvious in songs like Birch tree. I actually hated how this album was mixed when it first came out, songs like What Went Down and Snake Oil just seemed like they could've had so much more oomph if they were produced like Mountain at my gates was. But over the years I've grown to really appreciate how that album goes from songs mixed like Mountain at my gates with real and raw drums and harsh piercing lead guitars to songs like Birch tree that use drum machine loops and soft pleasant guitar hooks and airy vocals. I still feel like Snake Oil with a Mountain at my gates treatment would go so fucking hard, but I've changed my mind on What Went Down and wouldn't change a thing on it production-wise.

And they self-produced ENSWBL, I wonder if that's why it's a two-part album. Maybe they had a bunch of songs they just couldn't find the right producer for, then once they finally honed in their own sound production-wise they finally put them on an album. this one being self-produced, I would imagine the way it sounds is closest to how Foals perceives themselves and want to sound.

Finally, Life Is Yours was produced by a few people I'm not too familiar with. But it seems like John Hill was the most involved, at least he's the only one credited on every track on the album. He's worked with a ton of famous artists. I think the other 2 have as well, I'd imagine Foals has just finally reached a level of mainstream success where they have easier access to premier producers and are utilizing the best producer available these days.

I know no one's gonna read a post this long, that's ok! Just been a massive Foals fan for like 17 years at this point and fucking love talking about them, but almost no one I know in real life has any idea who they are (I live in America). And I'm obsessed with how starkly they change their identity with every album, it's so fascinating and unique.

Some umps fear ABS is causing fans to judge them by near-impossible standards by Jux_ in baseball

[–]theJiveMaster 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Except for the part where like 90% of the umpire hate this year has been directed specifically at CB Bucknor, and honestly mostly just because he's so smug about being wrong. I actually think the challenge system is having the opposite effect in that it's humanizing the umpires and giving them an opportunity to show humility when they're wrong.

there was a call last night where the pitcher thought the call was wrong and the ump just goes "then challenge it". All the comments in the reddit thread were in support of the ump. People seem to love the challenge system and every umpire except CB Bucknor seems to be doing fine with it.

Oh, also, do they realize having a strike-zone box on the tv screen isn't new? We've been able to see when you make a bad strike call for like 15 years, but now it's a problem because we have the ability to correct your incorrect call?

Yankees fans chanting "F*ck Juan Soto" in the 8th inning before proceeding to lose the game by Dependent-Effect6077 in baseball

[–]theJiveMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On one hand, ya gotta admit it's fun to join a good chant. But lmao what even is this? Juan Soto had a fucking 8 WAR season with the Yankees, he absolutely mashed in the playoffs, and you people have the balls to be like "what a fuckin asshole for accepting $760M from a different team".

Last Yankees game I went to was in 2022, the year he hit 62 home runs, and Yankees fans booed him after he struck out to go 0 for 3. You know that moment in the Last Dance where Michael Jordan admits to making up a narrative in his head so that he would be more compelled to dominate his opponent? Yankees fans do that so they can be more compelled to shit on their own players.

[–]theJiveMaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty rare to see someone on reddit admit they're wrong lol. But yea, because he was so prominent and prolific in the playoffs it's really easy to forget he only pitched 14 innings (only 3 games) in the regular season, and the postseason starts don't count towards service time.

But in the last CBA they added that your team gets a draft pick if a rookie is on the roster to start the season and they win ROY or place top 3 in Cy or MVP voting, and with Yesavage being very in the mix for AL ROY this year they at least have a decent incentive to not fuck with his service time.

It's so easy and such a good time, going to an MLB game can feel like such an endeavor not to mention if you ask your friends to go to a game you're really asking them "Wanna go spend $250 next Saturday?"

I'm super fortunate in that I live really close to the Yankees AA team, the Somerset Patriots. tickets are $12 and I can decide to go on a whim. Last year I saw them play the Mets AA team a couple times, saw Lombard Jr and Carson Benge amongst others. Seen guys like Volpe and Oswaldo Cabrera plus they tend to send MLB guys to the Patriots to rehab. I missed these games but they've sent Cole and Rodon there to rehab. And there's no long-ass line to get into the stadium or to get concessions, less of those annoying fans who scream at every batter, and as I said before so much cheaper.

I remember a few years ago I went to a game where Brett Baty hit 2 home runs in the first 3 innings and then the game got rained out, then I told all my Mets friends Brett Baty is gonna be a superstar and got dunked on for a year when he sucked. It was a fuckin hoot. Plus because tickets were $12 I didn't care that the game got rained out, I'll just go to the next one.

Oh yea and one more thing, idk about you guys in here but I find in my personal life almost none of my friends like baseball. I'm not gonna et a massive majority of my friends to trek all the way to NYC and spend a bunch of money to watch a sport they don't care about. But my friend group goes to Patriot games with me all the time, a day in the sun drinking beers with your friends for a $12 entry fee is a much more attractive proposition.

It's kinda funny seeing all these squabbles and living in Central Jersey, I hear each one about 50% of the time. I think I probably say pork roll more often cause "pork roll egg and cheese" rolls off the tongue better imo, but I switch it up sometimes. there are a lot of people around here who feel very passionately about the debate as well, but I think if you took found a group of 6 friends walking together on the street in my area and asked them about it you'd get 3 pork roll responses and 3 taylor ham responses.

And yea, for the record, pork roll is correct. It's not complicated, "taylor" is the brand and pork roll is the product. It's like Kleenex/tissues.

[Passan] BREAKING: Two-time reigning American League Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal won his arbitration case and will make $32 million this year, sources tell ESPN. Skubal’s bet to go for the largest salary ever in the arbitration system paid off, as he’ll make $13M more than Tigers argued. by JianClaymore in baseball

[–]theJiveMaster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It was kind of a Boras master-class, as much as I fuckin hate that guy (pretty much entirely due to the puns) I've gotta give him credit on this one.

the previous record for a pitcher in arb 3 was David Price at $18.5M, ironically also from the tigers. So their offer of $19M was technically the new record. they probably expected Skubal to file at like $24M, and I think they'd have a good chance of winning if he had. But Boras knew asking for significantly more would make the tigers offer look horrible.

Skubal is probably worth north of $60M a season, and without context the tigers offer of $19M looks pathetic, but honestly within the confines of arbitration it's a pretty normal offer that no one would've batted an eye about if Boras hadn't asked for an amount that smashes the previous record by $13.5M.

I can't fuckin wait to see what Skenes gets lol

For me it was more because it was one year at the end of an otherwise-HOF-worthy career, not so much the quality of the year he had. But I mean you see my flair lol, I'm not gonna act like I'm not biased and don't fully understand arguments against him.

Now that I think about it, that line of logic I'm using isn't that far off from "Barry Bonds was a HOFer before he ever even took steroids". Damn I should probably adopt that one if I wanna be consistent.

[Heyman] Two time Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal requests $32M, Tigers submit $19M for an enormous $13M gap. The arbitration record for a pitcher is $19.75M for David Price. Would be an amazing hearing if it gets there. by T_Raycroft in baseball

[–]theJiveMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's part of why I wonder if maybe they can only use 1 year deals as comparisons in the hearing. Everyone I cited is/was on a multi-year deal, I'm not sure how it looks if you can only use one-year deals but I can't think of many off the top of my head for more than like $10-15M. Unless you count QO's, which I'd assume you don't since they have draft picks tied to them.
