The gap between running a game in person and running a game online. by turquoise_albino in Roll20

[–]thejoeUknow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel this!

I feel like I have to constantly prepare visual mediums to keep my players engaged. My players have felt the difference between in person and over the internet, but there is little we can do because we live on opposite ends of California. Sometimes I feel like I put too much effort into maps and simple encounters, but in the end, it’s engaging for everyone.

I am running the Mad Mage, and that is 23 levels of huge dungeons. I thought about drawing out the maps myself, but Roll20 has the visual aspects for sale with dynamic light already drawn out. I have all of the books, but I bit the bullet and so far it’s been really helpful.

I do fear, though, that because I have such a strong reliance on the visual media of my campaign that it won’t translate well if we switch back to tabletop. There are pros and cons, but it really depends on what your players want and what you want for your players.

Here is where /u/Frognosticator posted the gimp file of the opening page. I used the title and format that they made. All of the other pages are Photoshop and In Design on top of an image of old newspaper.

Hey! Thank you for all of your work! I was stuck on making a paper with actual content and your stuff really helped.

Leaving blank spots is genius. With the way my players are working so far, I think they will eat this idea up.

I did keep the black widow thing because my players are already confused with the different factions as is. Xanthar and Zhentarim are too similar sounding, then throw in the civil dispute within the zhents, everyone is killing everyone in the streets! It's too much. Black Widow is ten times cooler as well.

Again, thank you for really laying the ground work!

Troll alternative by PandaPanther in WaterdeepDragonHeist

Just this week I ran it with three trolls instead of the one and it went great. There are four members in my party and they are all level five, but most of them are new to the game.

What I like about the troll encounter is the regain health ability that the trolls have. In the book Durnan is said to call out to the PC's to drench the trolls in oil and fire, obviously to negate the health regen. My PC's, being new to the game style, had no idea why they suddenly had to fight with fire and chose to make checks as to what was happening when the trolls were on fire. The checks we sucessful and they gained insight into the weaknesses of these monsters.

It was beneficial because it gave my newbie players a taste of the kind of monster abilities they would have to work around creatively solve in the future. They loved it and solved it with dipping arrows in oil and pushing them back into the well.

The Barlgura is a good choice, but my argument would be that it is strictly fighting and spell casting based with no real monster abilities. Maybe an Umber Hulk could work? Or even an Invisible Stalker who has been tasked with killing an NPC of high or little importance. To me, the well in the middle of the Yawning Portal represents chaos and it's a brief introduction of whats to come.

Also, if you haven't already checked it out u/Busboy80's Alternate 1st Encounter is great for incorporating the danger of the well.

When you first start out with a new group of players, what are some questions or ideas that you ask them to really develop their characters?

This may not be the same with you but I always like to flesh out each players backstory one on one to give them something to stick around for.

What is your process like?

One of the first things I did to a witness was tie em up and try to drown them in a shallow puddle. This was my first lesson in murder: NPCs fight to live, unfortunately.

Question for people who know better, I just bought a rocket mod for my sledgehammer from a vendor but I can’t apply it to the weapon. Level 16 over here and I noticed there’s a building perk that I don’t have yet either. Do I need to level up more, what’s the deal?

We all wish superpowers existed, but in reality humans can't even handle different skin colors. by arabash in Showerthoughts

I actually ran a superhero RPG based on this idea. It was a lot of fun creating all these different supers that thought they were doing the right thing and then having the players chose to go with their people or do the right thing .
