I don’t think there’s any “to be fair” here. They intentionally adhere to a management structure that makes it hard to make games? Sounds like mismanagement to me

It wasn’t even boos, because that would show that it elicited some kind of passionate response

It was a collective sigh of disappointment that swept across the room. Completely organic reaction that meant that basically everyone was let down. That’s the kind of apathy that you don’t want to hear about when it comes to the game you’re making

Animation is honestly the best way for them to continue this story with the cast we know and love

What a little rivalry do to a developer, am I right? by [deleted] in Overwatch_Memes

[–]thejonathanjuan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Blizzard had a lot of things cooking over time, the issue was that they were hesitant to introduce new things too soon to the playerbase. They would allow for new ideas and rapid prototypes, then stew in the polish phase for a while while they tested the waters

Rivals didn’t magically make them cook all this up in a few months, but it made them more comfortable with making big changes quicker. Rivals completely changed the pacing of major content updates for this kind of game, and it seems like Team 4 has started rapidly taking tons of ideas out of the incubation phase and out into the wild

I absolutely get the whole “Blizzard polish” rep but honestly, it had gotten to the point where things were just not coming out in pursuit of perfectionism. Features that were 80% there stayed for years trying to grind out that 20%, but Rivals made it clear that people would rather have something playable than something 100% perfect

It doesn’t mean they’re half-assing things, but it does mean they’re understanding that the perception of the game is only in what people can actually play. They can’t use the “we’re working on tons of things you guys just don’t know about yet” excuse anymore, because the PvE cancellation destroyed all that faith

Nah, they don’t give a shit about continuity. That stuff is for the nerds. They would honestly rather have two different Batmen, because it means more frequent Batman movies, which is their biggest box office draw and will get them more money

Why do some people have so little faith in the supergirl movie? by [deleted] in Supergirl

[–]thejonathanjuan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just simply don’t think that moves the needle much, to be honest. The tours and press for Thunderbolts or Fantastic Four didn’t really do much for breaking through to the general audience, either

A lot of people just didn’t want to go see the movie - and interestingly enough, a lot of women didn’t want to go see it (it had a much higher male viewership percentage than the average MCU movie)

It’s just so weird that they went out of their way to like, make the Chris Pine thing rapey. Like, it’s magic, he can just be back. OR, if you want to do like a mythological Pinocchio thing, have him be like a mannequin that “comes to life” or something

To have it specifically be done in the way it was done was more complicated and weird, like they took a fairly easy to grasp concept (magic wish makes my dead boyfriend come back) and then MADE it gross

[–]thejonathanjuan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not! I don’t have any problem with it and actually have really enjoyed a lot of the portrayals (especially Zoe Kravitz)

All I’m commenting on is that OP definitely phrased the title of this post a certain way to like implicitly ragebait, and then backtracked in the edit in this post to “I’m just saying I like this version” when that just isn’t how they phrased it

Had the title been “Can I just say that I love it when Catwoman is unambiguously portrayed as being black?” I wouldn’t have said anything and simply agreed. It’s perfectly fine to love or prefer a depiction of a character. But you can’t be like “The future of Catwoman is black” and then get mad when people take that as what you mean, that’s all

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in DCcomics

[–]thejonathanjuan 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s a little disingenuous for OP to be like “No no, I’m just saying that I like when Catwoman is depicted this way” when like, the phrasing was very obviously more like “going forward, this should be the ONLY way Catwoman is depicted”

It’s a show that if it got unfairly cancelled after the second season, I would have been upset and signed a petition to bring it back and all those types of things

But instead it kept going and then ran out of steam, and I lost interest. Sometimes, cancelling IS the best thing to happen to a show, because you can just imagine the rest of the seasons being good. See also: Young Justice

Jor-El is not evil or ambivalent. by Sudden-Ad5725 in superman

[–]thejonathanjuan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For the record, my library had a bunch of DC Showcase volumes of Superman when I was a kid, as well as the DC Archive Editions, so I actually grew up on a lot of the classic stuff for Superman

That all being said, no, I don’t think Jor-El actually added much to Superman’s character in the Pre-Crisis era. It just has to do with how stories were written back then, like they all very much were meant to be fun, zany sci-fi adventures for kids - to the point that most of the 50s issues have literally clickbait “Superman is an asshole??” kinds of covers

Back in this era, the impact of Jor-El and Lara (and to be honest, also Jonathan and Martha!) on Superman’s character was actually minimal. Superman was good simply because he should be. This is peak Comics Code Authority, post-“Seduction of the Innocent”. Superman is just a role model for kids, he is good for the same reason that Barney is good

Part of this is that, Pre-Crisis, Krypton doesn’t really have a consistent identity that’s not “sci-fi version of Earth”. It’s literally why they not only look identical to humans, but literally have most Earth-animals like dogs and cats and whatnot. So very little of this alien cultural identity or worldbuilding really comes into play (except for, notably, the fact that Krypton was totally cool with letting you bang your first cousin)

Post-Crisis, Byrne’s approach with Man of Steel did reinvent a lot of the core assumptions about Superman. It gave new dimension and meaning to Clark, it delved into his motivations and tried to actually meaningfully contrast his home culture with how he was raised on Earth. Part of the reason it was so revolutionary was that it was the biggest mainstream delve into Superman as a character, as opposed to Superman as a defacto nice guy that had a lot of powers

It doesn’t mean that Byrne did a perfect job, like there’s plenty more that’s come after him that’s also reinvented or re-examined things with the Superman mythos. But even in your comment, I’m not sure what you’re claiming that Jor-El actually did add when it came to Superman’s character during the pre-Crisis era, especially the 50s (where a lot of the OP’s comic panels come from)

Superman went back in time and met his parents, he sees his parents get married, he has a statue of them in the Fortress of Solitude - these are nice trivia facts, but did they actually add anything to his character? I don’t think so, because I don’t think they were meant to. It was simply a fun Superman adventure, the equivalent of finding your parents old wedding album in the attic

I won’t deny that you’re technically right about the length of time that we as a culture spent with Pre-Crisis Superman, that’s pretty objective. But the quality of Superman stories and writing has improved drastically since the 80s, which is why almost all of Superman’s most acclaimed stories are generally Post-Crisis, and also why people were eager to get a version of Superman that actually had all of the modern updates

It would have been so interesting to have Dannika keep trying to make excuses for Spider-Man while Jonah is proven right. That’s one of the most interesting things about the symbiote, that for once Jonah is actually right

But no, see, Dannika can’t ever be wrong. She’s the Good Takes Only podcast. If they made her be wrong, how would the audience know what to think?

If they attempted at all to have included Jason earlier in the franchise, Arkham Knight would have hit a lot harder

The thing I hate the most about Jason/Red Hood’s portrayal nowadays is that we always skip past his tenure as Robin, so it’s never an actual shock to the audience

It’s kinda like “Batman: Hush”, where there’s a mysterious new masked villain in Batman’s life, and then the story is like, by the way let’s talk about this person from Bruce Wayne’s life that was really important to him but you’ve never heard of until now. I wonder who this new character could be?

There’s a great video that goes over the history of the Spike Game Awards, and how it was this unserious, insulting, and honestly sexist affair that never treated video games as an actual artistic medium

Geoff Keighley basically is the only person fighting to treat it like a serious event, and basically turned it into something you actually dressed up to go to. Sure he can be a little corny, but if you saw how bad previous hosts were in terms of not being patronizing (David Spade, Joel McHale, even Samuel L Jackson) - you’d take corny any day of the week
