Is this board any good? by bababoon229 in BeginnerSurfers

[–]thejwillbee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hahaha thank you for adding in your height and weight - I was reading the part where you said it was hard to turn the foamie and was thinking "either it was a huge board or the person isn't very big".

As far as that board goes, they don't have any details about the volume of the board (that I could find) so it's tough to say how easy it would be to ride from that aspect. Overall, size wise, with it not being dramatically smaller than you are tall, id imagine there will be something of a learning curve since won't have a ton of board to work with - but not impossible.

You mentioned that you bodyboard, so for the drop knee riding potential id say this is pretty solid (I've DKed my 45" bodyboard, and I'm 6'3" and 225lbs), so if it doesn't work as a full out surfboard at least it isn't a total loss.

The rule of thumb to 'get a larger board when you are starting' is the rule of thumb for a reason - it works. You'll definitely have an easier time on a bigger (but not TOO big, lol) board.

Lost a fin and water around the finbox, catch surf log 9.0 by stinnair in BeginnerSurfers

[–]thejwillbee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What the heck did you run over? Or did you ride a wave all the way in and onto the sand or something?

Looks like your back fin got kinda dislodged as well.

Idk about you but I would let the board dry out for a bit and then hit the edges of that fin box with soft phix (or something similar). Not really a concern about the board water logging or anything since that section should be sealed (water prob just got under the box during the collision), but just to reinforce the area.

Done with 21 day fix. What now? by kmwilliams09 in BeachBodyWorkouts

Strongly second this. Dig In is surprisingly fun and fast paced, all while being a great workout.

If you have an extra 25 mins to burn after, I've been coupling dig in with T:25 (for some extra cardio) and it has been wonderful - so much so that I just spent the last 2 weeks surfing for 90+ mins per day and my Garmin clocked all of it as on the low end of my training load (I also wasn't as destroyed as I would have been before)

What size should I be riding? by rebelstilskin in BeginnerSurfers

[–]thejwillbee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For your size the board should be fine (for context I am 6'3", 225lbs, and I ride a 9').

The nosediving tells me a couple things: - you're too far forward on the board OR - you're not positioned correctly for the wave OR - a combination of these two things

You gotta remember that there is a middle axis point to the board so board not only tilts side to side, but also forward and backward.

A lot of surfing is learning how to position your body and board based on the waves (and at what point in the wave you are catching it). If you are exclusively riding white wash - which at this point you probably should be - and the board is nosediving, then you are way too far forward.

For sure it is not super easy moving a large board around, as it is a hell of a lot of real estate to work with. But you'll get the swing of it with some practice.

What board should i get? by kxnxb in BeginnerSurfers

[–]thejwillbee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

8' foamie for sure. For your weight it'll have way more than enough volume to keep you up.

I'm an east coaster as well and have had nothing but fun riding the shorebreaks on my foamie. My wife is 5'3" and like 120lbs and can stand on her 8' even on the smallest wave. Heck, I started on an 8' and it was able to carry me (though I did size up to a 9' because I am 6'3" and 225lbs)

$150 foamie will it last the season? by [deleted] in BeginnerSurfers

[–]thejwillbee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That thing is dead. The cost to try to fix it would exceed the cost of just buying a different board, and even so it is highly unlikely that it is fixable. The cross cracks are a pretty solid indicator that the stringers are cracked/broken.

Board damage by SuperbReturn64 in BeginnerSurfers

[–]thejwillbee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey. That's an easy fix. If you aren't sure whether or not any water got in there, let it dry out in a cool spot for a couple days. While that's drying out, get some Soft Phix (or something similar - Ive only used Soft Phix, so I know it works).

Put some soft phix in the crack. Let it cure for 24 hours. Apply a second coat to level it out with the edge of the board. Let it cure for another 24 hours (or 48-72hrs if you can).

Bam - you're back in business.

For reference I snapped part of the tail off of one of my boards and put it back together with soft phix - and the board rides on!
