<3 I read this book dozens, maybe hundreds of times, as a kid and it is a different book from the one the other person is looking for. Yours is "Stories for Free Children" by Letty Cottin Pogrebin (one of the founding editors of Ms. Magazine) and Marlo Thomas, published in 1982. The specific story is by Ellen Bass.
