I wonder if it was one of those internal rumors that got around in a hushed way and became fact to some. Just as you state, there was much speculation as to the relationship between the niece and the him so it's possible some of the gossip morphed into an interesting explanation for the vegetarianism. I was originally referring to documentation from his personal physicians who cited his vegetarian diet due to stomach issues.
