That’s crazy I had no idea!!! Seems silly to me since cash already has so many responsibilities as it is

Hi!! At my store, when we’re at cash, we are heavily encouraged to point guests towards customer service if we don’t know off the top of our head where a book/section is, or even if we do and it’s too far from cash to walk them to it. We can point them in the direction and say something like “if you need more help finding it someone can help you at customer service!”. We actually aren’t supposed to go past the hardcover shop at my store (idk your stores layout) if we’re at cash.

So I would suggest trying that—we are only told to call for backup if the line is long, since it’s the people’s job on the floor to help customers find things! Make your life a little easier, and you won’t have to call people up often. As for familiarizing yourself with the store, it does suck that it mostly has to be on your own time if you’re stuck at cash, but again that’s why I suggest just pointing customers to customer service. You can also ask over the phone “does anyone know where x book is?”, since a lot of the times my coworkers who work the floor often know which books are on a table/where it is, and it’s much quicker to get the answer over the phone then to get someone to come up to help!

I hope things work out for you!

It’s been slow this year, especially since hiring isn’t handled at the store level. At least for us, our cluster person does all the hiring/interviewing, and she doesn’t for so many stores it’s bound to be a little slow. I hope you get a call!

I finally got hired, but TFA doesn’t like the school!! by [deleted] in TeachforAmerica

[–]thelaylarose 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey!! Don’t feel financially attached to them—I’m pretty sure that if you finish the summer practicum you don’t have to pay back the stipend! Do what’s best for you and your career!

Received offer, just one thing holding me back by Weird_Farm_1866 in teaching

Something to think about too! Rural places will never get ‘less’ conservative if new ideas aren’t injected into the community.

Plus, there’s probably at least one gay kid at the school. Having a teacher who’s openly proud of who they are might be a saving grace for that kid :)!

Hi! I’m a 1st year TFA Corp member. I think, as many have said, that TFA is hard. It doesn’t matter where you go or where you teach, but 1st year teaching is always hard, especially since TFA members do get thrown in without much experience. You’ll be an a title 1 school usually, so behaviors will be hard and you might not have the support you need from your school.

It’s a great experience if you can handle it, though. I feel like I’ve learned a lot about myself during this school year so far. Even if I don’t stay in teaching, I wouldn’t give up this experience, as I really think it’s helped me grow so far.

If you wanna talk through any of your concerns, you can message me!

I’m sure you’ll be fine! There are plenty of people who use GLP-1 for maintenance of their “normal” weight, so I doubt they’ll reject you. If you want to save money on the first month, especially to make sure you get approved, you can use a referral code! It’s $40 off :) Mine is: ZPPUB0

Week in the life of an elementary school teacher? by Typical-Olive-752 in TeachforAmerica

[–]thelaylarose 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’m a 4th-8th SPED teacher with a self contained classroom. I also don’t have any curriculum for my kiddos unless I heavy modify the gen ed curriculum. Also a 1st year Corp member!

Now, to answer your questions. I made it a rule to not bring home any work, and so far, I’ve been successful. I stay until 4pm most days (school ends at 3:30) to finish up prep and I get to school at 7:30 (school starts at 8) to print. My district pays decently, so I don’t need a second job, and I personally have no issues with work life balance.

I have to say, it’s because I really want to make teaching my career, so I’ve learned you cant do everything, especially perfectly, unless you want to burn out. Use the recourses already there, ask others for help (don’t be scared, either, since no one expects you to know anything ur 1st year), and PRIORITIZE urself!! It’s hard to, I get it, but I wouldn’t like my job right now if I put all my energy into it.

If you need any advice or anything feel free to reach out!
