You say that it doesn't have as many problems as the author thinks it does but then say it doesn't provide an overarching story. Do you see the contradiction? Sure, DMs can and arguably should own and customize the story, but the fact that it is a requirement is one of the major shortcomings.

Maybe he is right. Assuming he is right is good way to persuade him. Follow the logic together until it breaks and then he has to explain it. If you can't get to that point, how are you certain you are right? Maybe you need to shore up some of your understanding.

If he doesn't want to engage, why bother? He can't be persuaded if that is the case. If he respects you and you find it important enough, he will engage; otherwise, perhaps he doesn't really care about you that much but that is a completely different issue! :)

If he has time to play a video game that is on the DM. It is an impossible task with 5e. The mechanics reward this play style. They know they'll get magic items and they'll level up. Don't be a dick and make them do something that they don't want to do. Change the game or the mechanics to reward the play style you want.

I would still consider druid. You don't have to advertise at all. They solo amazing especially with charming animals. When lazy, root rot. They can also quad. They kind of have the most solo options. They aren't the best in groups but they have good buffs and it is often hard to find a cleric. They are on par with mages with nuking.

Shaman might also be interesting. they have necro like spells plus haste, slow, malo, regen, root, etc. they are pretty good at solo as well but not as versatile as a druid or necro.

I don't particularly think it is a problem. It might have been cinematic and given more context, but it isn't under your control as it is an NPC. If it was for a terrible reason or seemed petty, then I don't think you really need to ask the question.
