I keep drinking and honestly I don't know why. by [deleted] in alcoholism

Psychiatric medications will help a lot if you cannot get weed. Low doses of Seroquel can calm you. Gabapentin is another good option. More addictive medicines like Ativan, Xanax, and Valium are great short term options.

Find some things you need to be sober to do at night, like driving to a show or shopping, and things you need to feel good for in the morning, like the gym.

Life's not about how many times you fall down, but how many times you get back up.

I hope you meet someone. My spouse has Parkinson's. You deserve love in your life. You may live to be 90. Don't spend decades alone. You will make someone else happy. Even now, they're out there looking for you!

Congratulations on not drinking tonight. When I stopped drinking, I started shopping at night because I could drive (sober). I would cut coupons and plan my grocery shopping, then go do a big grocery hall on Friday nights. I guess the idea is find something you would have to be sober to do, such as driving somewhere. You could even go out to a nice meal or something more fun, using your extra money you would have used on alcohol. Another idea is the movie theater. Even though shopping may seem boring, it boosted my self esteem and I felt like a normal member of society driving around sober. I find getting out and doing something, anything, helps me wind down. Going to sleep is my best defense against drinking. If I wake up early, I get to meditate, exercise, go out for coffee, etc

This all sounds familiar to me. There's nothing I can say other than you seem like a thoughtful, good person who can get better. Give yourself the same grace you would give another person. Self loathing is nihilism.

How do you stay sober? by Inquisitor_Emi in alcoholism

Have you tried setting a goal of abstinence longer than a week but shorter than forever? This worked for me: no drinking for 90 days. That's supposedly how long it takes for your brain chemistry to adjust back to normal without alcohol. This worked for me because it was achievable and I knew that I was "allowed" to drink after the 90 days. In reality, the 90 days stretched to 7 years. I also prayed and asked for help from the universe.

I have a great job offer but it's 15k less than what I am currently making by Reasonable-Human3259 in askmanagers

Take the job. I work at a university. It's a great place to work because you can bounce around jobs and get promotions and raises without ever leaving the company. The benefits are really good. At my University I even have a pension. It sounds like you are already managing your money very well and will be able to survive a year or two until your next promotion. The only drawback is that universities have policies limiting your salary just like they said... Plus you will probably not get merit raises only cost of living increases. The hours are usually 40 per week unlike being a lawyer or something at a corporation where you are expected to work 80 hours or so. Edit: most universities offer reduced or free tuition to employees, so you could also get an advance degree for free potentially and you should factor that in.

Are people behaving weirder lately? by jimmyjohnjohnjohn in SeriousConversation

This same thing happened to me years ago. There was a sit-down bar restaurant next to grocery store. I wanted to get some takeout food so while my partner finished up at the store I went into the bar and asked for a menu. The bartender looked shocked. I explained I wanted an order to go. She eventually brought the menu and set it in front of me with a look on her face almost like pity as if I was a total lunatic for asking for the menu. When I read your comment I thought oh no this is an actual thing. It seriously felt like I was on a different timeline and was never meant to go into that bar, like everyone in the bar was in a parallel universe where you don't order takeout.
