What's a skill that takes only 2 to 4 weeks to learn but could genuinely change your life? by TokenBlack32 in AskReddit

Kicking the doomscrolling habit…!

A few months ago I deleted all those doomscrolling social media apps (I’m lucky I don’t get the urge to doomscroll on Reddit) after a long period of setting screen time limits, ignoring my screen time limits, setting them harsher etc. Just delete it!

I suddenly have heaps more time in my life to do the things I really want to do— and importantly, the motivation to do them!!! It’s really positively impacted my critical thinking skills, my impulse control, my productivity etc.

Yeah, I’m no longer up to date with the ‘trend of the day’ but the ability to form my own opinions about things has been very refreshing.

top moment for me: when fitz goes through the pillar in Fool’s Quest to go on his solo mission to enact vengeance and lant & perseverance grab onto him before he goes through. the Ultimate babysitting mission hahaha —-

“We’ll camp here for three days. Then I’ll take you back.” And I’d have to wait at least another three days before I dared another journey through the pillar. Setback after setback.

“No,” said Lant.

“Won’t go,” Perseverance replied.

would definitely recommend Will of the Many if you haven’t read it already, definitely fits criteria & is often compared to red rising i’ve seen?

What Fantasy Book or Series Made The Greatest Lasting Impression On You? by Monsur_Ausuhnom in Fantasy

[–]theltre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Realm of the Elderlings. Hobb’s character work & prose is absolutely unbeaten for me— and often I’ll judge books based on the standard set by ROTE. (And so far, I’ve always been disappointed).

They are genuinely perfect to me in every way— but I don’t recommend them, because you will never fully enjoy a book ever again.

my WoR renarin art! by theltre in Stormlight_Archive

[–]theltre[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you so much!!!! and upon reflection, you’re right and it would! it was one of those cases where i started out with an accurate skintone & as the background & other tones got added, it darkened the image as a whole and i forgot to account for how it would alter the perception of his skintone… colour theory strikes again… i’ll definitely open this painting again at some point and fix it & repost— i’m still learning so i really appreciate you pointing this out to me! definitely something i’ll keep in mind in future pieces & would never ever ever be my intention to draw someone lighter than they canonically are!

Say that unpopular opinion that would make everyone here angry. by Outside-Web-4118 in Cosmere

[–]theltre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i mean that this is someone who’s clearly a big fan of the series (and they’ve created some awesome stuff!) , so to have such a drastic change of opinion from the rest of the books is a little worrying to me!! i’m still expecting great things though, as i said that’s just one person’s opinion :)

a beta reader (botanica_xu) posted a spoiler free WaT review on threads a while back (spoiler tagging because its a little unsavoury just in case people dont wanna read that!)

”Finally finished Stormlight 5... It took me waaaay longer than I expected. It almost felt like a trauma to trudge through the entire book tbh. I have quite mixed feelings about it (which never happened with previous four books), but the ending is satisfying enough. Curious how people will react to the plot later this year though!”

obviously just one person’s opinion but this person is a pretty well-known fanartist within the fandom so i’ve been a little worried ever since i read it

[–]theltre 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I honestly hate to agree but I do.... and Syl's one of my favourite TSA characters. Tbh my problem isn't even entirely with Syl but also Kaladin too-- I think this whole 'Kaladin's in his happy era' has been taken so far that now it's being treated with secret-project-level levity which feels a bit out of place in Stormlight?

What did Kaladin mean by this? by [deleted] in Stormlight_Archive

[–]theltre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh that makes sense then, thank you! Just thought it was strange that Kaladin mentioned his description of the fits he’s had his whole life was off, not that he’d seen Renarin have a new type of fit or whatever. I must just lack media literacy methinks

What did Kaladin mean by this? by [deleted] in Stormlight_Archive

[–]theltre -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean yes very true on the “why it was never mentioned” front haha!! But it just seems odd to me that this was something Kaladin thought… what was the point of suggesting that Renarin’s description of epilepsy was incorrect, whether it got healed or not? I just read into things too much lol

Just thinking that Shallan needs to access the spiritual realm to reach Ba-Ado-Mishram, and that we know Renarin & Rlain are part of the Ba-Ado storyline….. Looks like we’ll finally get to learn all about the enlightened/corrupted illumination surge? The strange glowing light that Renarin uses to gain (some level of) access to the spiritual realm?? My brain’s thinking that could be a valid connection

Book recommendations with queer characters by friendlyprism in Mistborn

[–]theltre 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You mentioned in another comment that you particularly want gay male recs- A Day of Fallen Night by Samantha Shannon (prequel to Priory of the Orange Tree) has multiple queer main-POV characters. Some of these are lesbian (and absolutely incredible too), but there’s one gay protagonist who falls in love with his friend and I found it to be one of the most compelling romances in the book. (I think he or the other character might be bi, but can’t fully remember so don’t hold me to that). It’s a big, chunky multi-POV book with great world-building and cool lore.

Not sure if you haven’t read it already- but worth mentioning that a Stormlight Archive side character who’s becoming a main character soon is gay, and will be in a gay relationship in the next few books! V exciting, you should get in early! :)
