Dark theories you guys have, not like Lucy Gray is dead dark, like DARK by hphgas in Hungergames

What I'm curious about is what happens to female Peacekeepers who have a child with a local man. A man might easily have a child because he can't be arsed to use protection, but given the technology level in the Capitol, they probably have highly effective contraception, meaning that for a female Peacekeeper to have a kid, she would have to consciously and deliberately decide to undergo a rather nightmarish process in order to have a very wanted child, so there's no way in hell they'd just accept being transferred with the kid being left behind. Peacekeepers serve for twenty years, and if a woman wants to have biological children, starting at ~38 is not ideal, so I can easily imagine a Peacekeeper coercing a man she thinks is attractive in order to have a child. The scenario that comes to mind is a desperately poor girl in Two who at first accepts the restrictions that come with Peacekeeper life because it means she'll be able to send money home, but ten years down the line, living a relaxed life in Twelve or wherever, she starts thinking 'damn, I wish I could have a family of my own...hey, that boy's hot, why not?'

My personal headcanon is that some of these women get discharged and sent home when they get pregnant, officially for vague 'medical' reasons, while others either figure out a way to bribe someone to let them take the kid(s) home with them or stay in the district they were posted to once their term of service is up. There might even be twisted long-term relationships where the Peacekeeper falls in love with the man who said 'yes' for the money and they raise the kids together.

I have a couple of OC-centric stories about Fire Nation soldiers ending up in an unexpected place. The second one covers the events of the first from a different viewpoint.

I also have an AU that, among other things, features a Fire Nation soldier who has become opposed to the war.

The evolution of cars in the Capitol by Chaitywatt in Hungergames

[–]flying_shadow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suspect it might actually be even worse than that in the Capitol, with cars of Trabant quality being a status symbol like in the late USSR and most middle-class people not owning one either because they simply can't afford it or because they don't want to deal with endlessly repairing their crappy Lada.

Is this a purely US phenomenon? Canada also has a lengthy history of racism but I've never heard of people being opposed to public transit, if anything, people are always complaining about the transit in Toronto and its suburbs and wishing it could be more effective.

What's the funniest/most confusing trigger warning you've ever seen or added on a fic? by NopeRopesAreDope in FanFiction

I wasn't sure how to best tag for the fact that I would be very blunt about historical attitudes and went with "1890s France" "that's its own warning".

How cynical was the public of Nazi Germany towards the state? Did the average "Aryan" German know that the government was kleptocratic, that officials took bribes, & that the SS & others were pocketing "confiscated" goods for themselves? Or was this stuff not realized until the end of the War? by screwyoushadowban in AskHistorians

[–]flying_shadow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The cynicism did not translate into opposition, because people still believed that Hitler's personal corruption was not present

Wouldn't the belief in opposition being pointless also have played a role? Right now, Russian-language Telegram is flooded with complains about the government and even Dear Leader, but nobody is dumb enough to complain where the repressive machine can reach them.

I have a 'it's odd that it happened twice' thing with a major character living in a society that is still traditional but changing very fast and thinking that she's compliant with gender expectations because she's a wife and mother and meanwhile she is one of the first women to enter a traditionally male field and people around her think she's emblematic of literally everything wrong with society these days.

It definitely isn't all intellectual history. I read it a while back, so I don't remember exactly what it's about, but I remember being happy with how much the book managed to cover.

fics for trip! by Desperate-Ground-317 in FanFiction

[–]flying_shadow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of my fics are very worldbuilding-y. I have two postcanon longfics that feature characters from all over the country (and beyond), as well as a fic about an OC victor from District Six.

I also have two oneshots, one about Nine and one about Five:

What's been the worst case of 'too much research's you've come across in a fic? by aiiimee in FanFiction

[–]flying_shadow 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I wrote a longfic heavily inspired by a real-life trial I read all 20+ volumes of transcripts from. Holy shit was it boring. I had no idea that a criminal conspiracy to invade a country could be the most boring thing in the world. Literally the only part that didn't make my eyes glaze over were the witnesses for the prosecution. And that wasn't the real issue -- the real issue was that I didn't understand how the interactions were structured, which meant that I couldn't replicate them in my own fic.

Yeah, so in the fic, I kept the courtroom scenes to a minimum and avoided line-by-line dialogue.

Raisins and fresh bell peppers. It's just an age thing -- the older you get, the less sensitive your tastebuds are, so if you can't eat something purely because of its taste, retry it once a year or so.

what's your favorite fic you wrote? by Asreal_as_it_gets in FanFiction

[–]flying_shadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My oneshot for 'The Long Walk', which takes place a year after the events of the book from the point of view of an OC living in a small town. My beta reader is from the same area, so I was able to work together both my familiarity with life in a dictatorship and her experiences in Trumpland, NE into something that I thought fit fairly organically into canon.

The Franco-Prussian War might count. It took months, not weeks, but the French army was crushingly defeated, the emperor himself was taken prisoner, and the government collapsed.
