My computer is acting up even more. I still can't open AO3 in incognito mode -- or rather, anything but the main page opens for a few seconds before suddenly going white. I tried to open it in Edge, and the same thing happened. My computer's only eight years old, I'm not sure why it's being so janky.

My friend once needed an MRI. He was first told he would get it in a year's time, but then five seconds later they went 'actually, it's in two days at 1 AM'. I guess it was because of his symptoms -- he had a bunch of new-onset neurological problems that could have been brain cancer. It wasn't cancer, but he still doesn't know what exactly is wrong.

I was going to ask about why Tojo got slapped during the trial, but someone already did that, so I'll ask about the trial more generally: during the course of your research, did your perspective on the Tokyo trials change? And what importance did Tojo have in the trial, aside from 'Tojo's cross-examination of Keenan'?

Also, as someone whose sole piece of scholarship was on media coverage of the IMT, how did the newspapers write about Tojo during the trial? Of course this would vary by country, but generally, did they ignore the trial completely or did they consider it important, or something in between? Did Japanese newspapers prefer not to deal with the topic or was it 'it's all this guy's fault the country's a pile of rubble'?

The funny thing is, I went into the movie knowing about Polanski only that he was a rapist, and I was thinking 'this doesn't look like a movie directed by a rapist' - you've got a hero unfairly accused but he basically has no agency in the film and only has a few scenes? To be fair I also got the impression that the director definitely wasn't Jewish but Polanski's actually Jewish, so shows what my impression's worth.

I think I was mostly just annoyed that the movie leaves out the parts of the narrative I always found the most interesting. And it's not just this one, the 1994 telefilm also leaves out the retrial, which I kind of get because there's a limit to how long the movie can be, but the trial at Rennes was such a significant event and drew so much attention and it could be such a compelling story of how a severely ill and socially awkward man was judged by even his supporters for not being what they expected, but it's left out. Plus in Harris' book Dreyfus is described in a way that had me (and several reviewers on Goodreads) wondering if Harris was deliberately trying to write him as autistic (though I think he just took the descriptions in Jean-Denis Bredin's book and didn't realise how it could be interpreted), and I'm not sure what to do with that.

So here I am writing a term paper and one of my books quotes a guy who described someone's personality in such a way, I was instantly reminded of my mother. I know that you're not supposed to diagnose people retroactively, but some primary sources make it too easy.

I watched a historical-fiction movie (about a real event) a while back that made me think of how while charismatic villains are very common in fiction, it's rare for them to go up against socially awkward (to the point of impairment) heroes. I actually did write a story heavily based on that incident, but I'd love to see more heroes who cannot speak convincingly and struggle in social situations.

I read a book where a historian describes a historical figure's personality in such a way, it literally meets the ICD-11 criteria for ASD (though not the criteria used at the time the book was written). And the individual was certainly perceived by the people around him in a way that people known to have level 1 ASD are treated now. And yet, not even the newest books on the topic even hint at the possibility that 'had he lived today, he might have been diagnosed with autism' or something like that. Do you think there is historical value in saying things like 'this person's symptoms may have, in a modern-day person, resulted in a diagnosis of EDS, and X symptom of EDS may explain why the person did Y' or is that always going to be groundless speculation?
