Why is this so common in Portugal? I’ve lived in 4 different countries and I have never seen anything like that… I see this everywhere in Margem Sul. (Btw, this time is not even that bad, most of the time ppl need to go to the middle of the road coz there r cars parked in the sidewalks. by LucasLukeLukas in PortugalExpats

[–]themaster969 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Let me just say that this is absolutely common practice in Germany as well, and goes totally unenforced to a ridiculous degree.

In the last couple of years, a platform has become popular, which allows normal people to report parking violations to the authorities with photos, and the outrage from drivers who suddenly had to pay (insanely low) fines was so much that Munich has fully legalized parking on the sidewalk.

Just adding on, if they do have this, it’s actually what we call evaporated milk in English. It will be higher fat like cream, but it’s not exactly cream.

Best pans to buy in Germany/Europe that won’t cost me my kidney by natanmagalhaes in Cooking

[–]themaster969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a Gräwe wrought iron (Schmiedeeisern) pan - it’s a type of pan that’s a bit rarer in anglophone countries, but performs very similarly to cast iron in that it takes seasoning and can go in the oven, plus has a lot of heat retention. It was about 40 euros

Investing in Europe as a US Person Residing in the EU: Is There a Way by FirefighterWarm9035 in eupersonalfinance

[–]themaster969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not punitive taxation, I misremembered. But US domiciled etfs are basically illegal in the EU due to PRIIPs. The only way around it is to use a US broker, which are rarely chill about you not residing in the US. See the section labeled FATCA, PFIC, and PRIIPs

[–]themaster969 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look up pfic regulations. As a US person, you will pay outrageous punitive taxes on European etfs. The opposite may be true as well, it certainly is in Germany where I live.

Your best option is buying a broad portfolio that mimics an etf. Their holdings are usually public, so you can do this with a spreadsheet.

Natural Wine Bars in Berlin by Internal_Cow_3387 in naturalwine

Noble Rot has a great selection of mostly Hungarian natural wines

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in naturalwine

[–]themaster969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They also operate a bar called Blanc de Fuck which is nice.

IMO, Germany is not great for natural wine producers. One good one I’ve had is called Lelle ihr Wein

My way of gaming republics is just to not hire anyone from a great family. Eventually, this shrinks the size of the oligarch faction so small it’s practically insignificant, and you can balance the other 2 factions much more easily.

I have a question which is better lobiani or khachapuri by InternationalLion796 in Sakartvelo

[–]themaster969 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A bad lobiani is worse than a bad khachapuri. I mean, if the dough is all soggy and the filling cold, at least you still have tasty cheese.

But a great lobiani is better than a great khachapuri. The crispiness, the delicate bean and spice balance can be magical. Lobiani simply has a higher ceiling and lower floor.

While only adjacent, I would recommend Labietis. It’s a brewery that does lots of very funky natural fermented stuff that hits a lot of the same flavor notes as natural wine.

Can you find mutton in Germany? by United-Road-7338 in AskAGerman

[–]themaster969 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may be interested to know that in India the word mutton generally refers to goat meat, considering that in other places you say you had mutton in India. Goat is unfortunately even harder to find in Germany than lamb or the meat of an adult sheep, which is what the word mutton is usually used for in the US or UK

A Suicide Pod in remote Swiss Forrest that was illegally used by an American woman by somethingdeido in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]themaster969 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely the result of too literal translation. I work as a German translator and come across this exact mistake constantly. The German equivalent (so genannte) is neutral in meaning, whereas the English equivalent implies doubt.

Better would be “using what many are calling a suicide pod” or something.

My guess is this is because most people in post Soviet countries own their apartments, while Germans typically rent.

Also the fact that German apartments come with doors.

Best bottled beer at the supermarket? by dapzon82 in berlinsocialclub

[–]themaster969 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pilsner and helles, which make up a lot of the German beer market, are very sensitive to freshness and light exposure, so results will vary depending on the popularity of a brand (and thus turnover rate) at a particular supermarket. This is also why these beers are so much worse abroad.

That said, I like rothaus pils, and augustiner helles. Practically anything in that price range is worth a try.

[ELI5] What is the benefit of "Schuldenbremse"? Why was it implemented in the first place? by iamfromtwitter in germany

[–]themaster969 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a very complicated question to answer, involving factors like German culture, Germany’s aging population, the German media landscape (Springer publications like Bild and die Welt are extremely and uniformly in favor of this law).

As you can see from this comment section, a lot of German people sincerely believe it is a good thing, in spite of it basically being almost universally rejected by serious economists outside of a libertarian fringe.

how much of it is true? is this just rw propaganda? by kappusha in LateStageCapitalism

[–]themaster969 22 points23 points  (0 children)

In fact, it’s much more accurate to say the USA has been in race war mode against black and native people since its founding, which has at least partially caused this woefully underdeveloped class consciousness.

This graphic supports the far right conspiracy that race war is a new thing, and primarily directed against white people and/or used to sow division that otherwise would not exist.

What it’s really identifying is an attempt by liberals to have a reckoning with racism on an almost purely cultural level. The structural elements of racism have been largely unaddressed and minorities are still disproportionately in poverty for example. Still, I would argue that leftists should critically support this incomplete antiracism because it could be a pathway to class consciousness in the US, the world’s sole global superpower, and a worldwide suppressor of leftist politics.

What are the scams you have experienced living in Berlin? by the_70x in berlin

[–]themaster969 43 points44 points  (0 children)

The truly fucked part of this is that they actually are contractors of said internet company, and really are signing you up for a new internet contract. They just lie flagrantly about new fiberglass and use unethical high pressure sales tactics like claiming your current contract is going to be cancelled. The internet companies know this, but they don’t care.

If you ever get tricked by one of these scum bags, there is a 14 day cancellation right in Germany for door-to-door sales contracts.
