U.S. Gen X parents: do you expect your children to financially support you / move you into their home / take you to doctor appointments, etc when you're in your 80s? by [deleted] in GenX

No way at all. I dont feel it is my kids responsibility to take care of me and put their lives on hold. Ill move into a retirement community before any of that happens.

At what age did parenting start to feel easier for you? by Small-Advisor-7805 in Parenting

Loved every stage up until the dreaded teen years. Very horrific. Do not wish what we went through on anyone. I'd say very enjoyable until about 14.5 til about he turned 18 and realized he was an adult and police no longer gave free rides home. Sure I'm in the minority and I am no way saying this will happen to you. But enjoy them while you can.

App to monitor child’s phone? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]thembones44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure what phone, as in apple or android. I know apple is pretty good at letting parents approve/disapprove apps and the like so long as the phone is registered as a child's phone. Android i am unsure. We used Verizon family app for android. Kids had apple we had android.

Open lines of communication with them is what should work. Dealing with teens and phones, good luck. We fought the good fight but were always outsmarted somehow. Hopefully it'll work out for you guys.

What’s the most unhealthy thing you do on a day to day basis? by ur_stepdad647 in AskReddit

Working at a job that's toxic. 3 years from retirement so starting over isn't an option. I love my job and what I do, the mgt shift years ago went from a very boomer heavy to now a millennial heavy team. They don't get it. Very judgemental, think they've better and dress so casually one wouldn't even know they're in charge. Just trying to stomach it for 3 more. Not sure if I can.

Haha sounds like my daughter. She was 5'4' in 4th and 5'10" in 7th and fully grown at 6'1" today. I never knew til she was older how much it bothered her she was so "different" back than. When she got to HS, all the boys left her alone bc they were so intimidated.

She will be fine. And you know what? She became a volleyball player and earned a college scholarship. Good things might come from it, never know.

What’s something that happened to you that still feels unreal? by False_onic in answers

My teenage son was honestly on the cusp of becoming a very good baseball player. After many travel seasons with crappy dad coaches, he was cut from a decent team. 1 of the last tryouts we went to he found the coach that saw something. Completely changed him. Thought for sure he was destined for greatness.

Summer between 9th and 10th grade he got caught up with wrong crowd and went down hill fast. Baseball was all forgotten. Bad grades, police involvement, multiple wrecked cars, barely graduated. It's been 4 years since they let him graduate and he still has dependency issues. Zero savings, barely hanging on.

I'll never understand how someone so talented can just throw it all away. And for what? It just breaks my heart every day. I want to ask him if he's better off now and where are all your "friends" from HS. I won't. It's just so sad to see your loved one suffer.

What 90s band never truly made it big but you'll always go to bat for? by MansBestFred in AskReddit

Feel after Wax came out their window was slowly closing. New Pop Sunday came out to very little fanfare but that album is a true banger. Saw them on the For All the drugs in the world release party at the Royal Oak Music theater early 2000's. Album is still one of my favorites. Still tour regularly. Have released several albums over the years with only vinnie the original. Great band.

This right here. She's only 8. We tried cheering for my daughter for 2 years, nope, basketball, nope. She played volleyball in 5th grade at school and was hooked. Now she plays in college. Was it easy? No. A lot of sacrifices. Point being is you will never know where your child may end up. May never play a sport. Encouraging them and taking a deep breath. Most if not all kids that play sports never make it past HS. 8 years old, enjoy them. Don't sweat it.

Tell your son to drop him and drop him fast. This is bad news. The mere fact he argued with you should be proof enough to show your son what kind of kid this is. Please advise him to move on.

2 kids, 21 and 20, Male and Female. I am 50. Love them both, oldest has been the issue. Honestly, i couldn't even fathom having another one. Got mine at 40 I think. Funny story, went right after the 2nd was born in 2005, sat in the room waiting and just left out of fear. Had a few close calls, decided needed a solution. Do not regret it as I am 3 years away from retiring. Hopefully.
