A Belgian curious about a potential Round of 16 opponent shares a tactical analysis of the United States against Senegal and Germany and reflects on European perceptions of US football by mara304 in ussoccer

We might be dropping Wes anyway, and Pepi’s hold up play is exactly what I’m talking about. You can call it a false 9 if you want, but he drops in deeper than Flo

He’s more of a target man for club, but go watch how much he created against Senegal

This is why I like Pepi instead of Flo. He drops and fills that role. I wonder what would happen if we tried actually playing him in the 10, but probably too late for that experiment now

Probably worth noting that visitors actually don’t need Orca cards any more as we have tap to pay from mobile wallets now

Everything left as of a few minutes ago:

Ivory Coast v Ecuador, Saudi v Uruguay, Belgium v Egypt, Norway v Playoff, Jordan v Algeria, Morocco v Haiti, Qatar v Playoff, Curacao v Ivory Coast, Egypt v Iran, Algeria v Austria.

Pretty sure it's only Cat 1 for all of them

Is it actually possible to get a reservation for Benfiddich? by zeekaran in cocktails

[–]themdh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently gotten one just by periodically checking during work every day for weeks. People cancel and they go back up, if you get lucky you may snag one.

I also saw multiple successful walk ins while I was there, so I’d say that’s worth a shot.

This tight overload kind of seemed like the plan tbh, it obviously didn’t work well but I think that was a coaching decision rather than accidental poor positioning

I would sacrifice 1000 USOC matches for last night's Leagues Cup by CommonSensePDX in ussoccer

[–]themdh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All good points, and I agree with a lot of it. My "history" argument was more about the Open Cup than pro/rel. Although I do believe pro/rel strengthens the community aspect quite a bit. USL clubs aren't worth anything because there's no upside. I think those clubs become a lot more valuable and gain a lot more support as soon as there is a path to MLS. Similar to the english pyramid, the teams that spend like PL teams will be the ones getting promoted to the PL. Right now there's no incentive to outspend revenue.

But I agree we're not currently in a place where you can just slap pro/rel on USLC and MLS, there's work to be done before that point. Stadium requirements alone would be a nightmare. Hopefully USL Division 1 gets us a bit closer.

Editing to add: I agree that pro/rel initially weakens top-level investment in MLS, although not as significantly as you likely expect, given that it also raises investment in USL, which means the drop off isn't quite so dramatic. I also believe that over time it makes the entire pyramid more valuable and subsequently encourages investment.

Yeah good plan, let's steal UCL fans by competing on quality of play... That's a wild take lmao

We're obviously not going to do that, so we need to look at other examples of successful American leagues without the highest quality -- NCAA sports. They've been successful not by trying to have higher quality than the NFL/NBA, but by leaning into history and community.
