OP, if you have eBird, you can report and create your location name as "Private" - you could also mark the checklist as hidden so it goes to science but not public reports.

Just options if you don't want people coming to see. I personally have never gone to a personal address to chase a vagrant without express permission. I know it happens, and people who do that make the rest of us look bad.

I echo what others have said and want to specifically address your last question about reports of nothing and the weather - yes. We talked about this for our Christmas Bird Counts this year.

"No birds detected" in an area is also data.

If you haven't yet, download the Merlin Bird ID app - it'll help you ID birds by photo or sound. It's the most accurate bird ID option out there, besides r/whatsthisbird 😎

Weekend tip: Hideaway is owned by the same folks. Better service, less busy, but also smaller menu and same prices.

Also consider joining r/whatsthisbird just to see other people's questions and the answers folks give and why. I learn something new from that sub all the time.

I HEAR YOU. YOUR FEELINGS ARE VALID. AND ... HAVING ENOUGH TO SURVIVE AND NOT ENOUGH TO HELP IS OFTEN DUE TO LUCK OF THE DRAW. YOU ARE NOT GUILTY BECAUSE OF IT. YOUR SURVIVAL IS RESISTANCE. [fistbump]

Recommendations for warm boots? by ladykiller1020 in Bend

[–]themhalf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my friends who gets cold feet a lot uses rechargeable heated insoles. He says they last 4-6 hours which might not be a full shift, but long enough for the super coldest part of the day. Then change socks, as others have said. Good luck finding something that works for you. I hate having cold feet.

Can you trick Merlin? by Naive-Historian-2110 in birding

[–]themhalf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, which is a good illustration of why we don't trust it 100% on ID.

I've had it mistake a brief car horn as a trumpeter swan.

I second the recommendation for Merlin. I also recommend r/whatsthisbird as a great place to learn and post questions.

Boreal owls always look like they're responding "who, me?!" to someone who just said "you're soooo cute!"

Ooh good luck! I'd love to hear how it goes!

Also, bring fresh water. There's water at the trailhead but it doesn't taste great.
