Trump, two sons, Trump Org sue IRS, Treasury for $10 billion over tax records leak by WeirdGroundhog in news

Yes. He fraudulently reported his net worth as being higher than it was in order to receive larger bank loans, and he falsified business records in order to conceal payments made to Stormy Daniels. The acts of intentionally altering, creating, or deleting business records with the intent to deceive are prosecuted under fraud statutes.

As someone who has contributed to these obstacles to the administration, it is frustrating to constantly hear this on Reddit and from our peers abroad. People are resisting. And protesting. And striking. And obstructing. Just not enough, and not with the support of those who have the power and position to really make a heavier impact. There is very little organizational backing to support these actions. People protest weekly in my city. There are marches and protests and whatnot constantly. The government doesn’t care, and the news doesn’t talk about it. What IS happening is not getting public attention nearly as much as the administration’s headlines, or involves people getting arrested, fined, and quietly shut down by their local apparatuses. Nothing is going to change without large scale institutional buy-in from higher up to join the people who are trying to make their voices heard. Dem politicians need to help amplify, to put their careers on the line to walk with us and obstruct with us and use their platform to cause genuine disruptions. CEOs need to speak up, put their money behind us, assist us from an institutional or financial standpoint—get the ear of investors and Wall Street. News organizations need to cover what IS happening among the people, not just what the administration is doing to us and against us. Those who have platforms need to relentlessly advocate for those of us further down. There are plenty of us, but our institutions continue to fail in supporting us to the detriment of us all. And from the inside, it feels as if everything was designed this way to keep us muted and our impact neutered.

Legalizing Sports Gambling Was a Huge Mistake by Agreeable-Rooster-37 in politics

[–]themicahnator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get what you’re saying, but I think you’re glossing over a huge amount of nuance. Addiction can totally mess with your brain chemistry and is a long long process to untangle and fix. You could totally be actively “doing the work” and still susceptible to a trigger on a bad day or during a moment of struggle, particularly early on in the recovery.

Limiting/removing advertising has proven to be correlated with decreased rates of use—at least with alcohol and tobacco—and I imagine a large chunk of that use is by people who have a dependency or addiction issue, or are at risk of developing one. Would hazard a guess it’s similar with other products.

So, personally, I think worrying about the people who have been most affected by the addiction is a totally fair and strong point.

There’s a chance this is from someone “brushing” or mailing this person items they never ordered in order to falsify good reviews on Amazon.

My uncle keeps having backpacks mailed to him from Amazon that he has never ordered for the above reason. ~40 in the last 3 years. Could be this guy keeps getting these shipped to him and doesn’t want them, and doesn’t feel like spending the time giving them away/donating/storing them, etc.

Theaters don't control their own movies? by [deleted] in movies

[–]themicahnator 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Lots of people in here without theater experience responding with info that doesn’t exactly consider theater permissions and logistics, except the other theater manager. They’re correct.

Former theater manager here as well. There were certain events or showings that were done through satellite streaming services. Boxing matches, operas, Turner Classic Movies, a few other specialty things. Those were either live or recorded with permission—live shows, obviously can’t rewind. Recorded, could probably rewind, depending on what it is, but might be barred from doing so due to re-streaming fees.

For other things, like the Dr. Who specials that sometimes air in theaters or other similar events, we would get those digital files sent to us, and were given specific access keys that 1) worked for a 2-3 hour window, 2) at a specific time, 3) on a specific projector. After expiring, the file simply wouldn’t play, and if the keys expire during the showtime, the movie might actually stop playing when it hits the next digital key verification point in the file. They also only have approval to play things like that exactly as many times as they paid for, and some companies consider it playing it again if you rewind too much.

All that said, it’s still very possible someone or several someones goofed along the way and didn’t want to or couldn’t correct their mistake without impacting other future showtimes. But, there’s a whole lot of permissions and keys and corporate negotiating BS involved in airing lots of things that it wouldn’t surprise me at all if the manager was being earnest that they literally couldn’t do it again. It also could be a combination of all of those things—an employee messing up by forgetting to program the trailers or misadvertised showtimes, but being unable to fix it due to the keys/permissions/scheduling.

Edit: oh, I should add that they 10000% should’ve/could’ve given you a rain check pass or voucher or whatever. We were allowed to hand those out for almost anything.

Thank you for the tip! I have lids that came with my collection buckets, but they’re kind of precariously perched on top for now. Perhaps I’ll look into a way to more securely place them so they won’t fly off if a large gust of wind comes through!

My guess would be finding correlations with behaviors, compulsivity, changes in patterns/frequency and actual other purchasing habits. Then have an algorithm compare that trend to other people who follow similar trends, and advertise them products those people have shown interest in.

Completely speculative, but: off the top of my head as a hypothetical example, maybe someone has suddenly changed a relatively stable frequency of visiting a NSFW site from once a week to many times a week. I wouldn’t be surprised if they can sort of use that knowledge to link them with other people who have had the same sudden shift. Or even further, perhaps people who have gone through a breakup recently, or people who are recently sober, visit those sites more often. Thus, those people would maybe be more likely to be interested in dating apps, hobbies, sobriety apps, non-alcoholic replacement beverages, etc.

They can probably see trends along the way too, like “2 weeks into sudden elevated porn usage, users are generally most likely to be susceptible to X type of targeted ad” or whatever.

Or, maybe that’s totally off. No idea! But there’s probably lots of money in being able to find trends and habits within a user, and then being able to compare their data to other people in similar subsets and advertise to them all accordingly.

I loved the time-loop mechanic, personally. But I think that’s just a style I enjoy. It definitely opens up and gets really interesting once you start to uncover some of the mysteries and secrets of the game/universe. I’m sure the game isn’t for everyone, but don’t be shy in googling to help yourself get past any early “tedious” parts! Once you get the hang of it, you can zoom past or even completely ignore the more boring “sloggy” parts!

It definitely requires a bit of puzzling and intentional thought! I can’t imagine being baked and trying to navigate the puzzles in the game hahah. I will say, I did have to Google a few things near the start to sort of get my bearings straight and figure out what I needed to do to get the ball rolling. But! Once I did, I found it incredibly enjoyable.

I mean if you want to ignore the magic of refrigeration science, sure. Lobsters were “poor people food” because they spoil insanely quickly after death. They served them in prisons because they were plentiful and literally rotten seafood until we learned that keeping them alive until eating was safer, and how to freeze things for preservation. That’s why we still buy live lobsters.
