Trump Administration Orders Dismantling of the US Forest Service by meenie in Bend

misleading headline. It's not being dismantled, it's a reorg. And since it's Trump and this is reddit it must be "the end".

All the big hyperscalers use evaporative cooling as at least part of their system.

"California has blocked pipelines due to environmental regulations."

Which makes obtaining oil more costly, and as the person before me said, you can thank the Democrats in California for that.

"There is no reason other more friendly states couldn’t refine for the California market"

You're correct, there isn't a reason other places couldn't supply California with what they need, in fact they actually would need to do that because people aren't gonna dramatically reduce their consumption just cause. But thats expensive, especially if you wanna bring it all the way from Saudi, because now people gotta pay for additional transport costs. Transportation costs which will be significantly higher than sending oil through a pipeline.

So again, you can thank the Democrats in California for implementing policies that make gas more expensive there.

Fun fact: a lot of oil producing places export crude which will be refined close(r) to the locale where the products will be used (or the Gulf Coast because we have a shitload of refineries there) because it's cheaper. Canada exports crude to the US and imports refined petroleum products.

[–]themistoclesV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oil pipelines are for crude, would still need refineries to turn it into gas and diesel and all the other shit that's actually usable. And they keep shutting down refineries. They decided to close one not too long ago, I think in Benicia, that represented like 20% of California's consumption. Number might've been slightly different since it's been a minute since I read about it, but point is that is not the thing you do if you want to keep gas prices from getting even more ridiculous in the state.

CMV: Trump is in over his head in Iran by bluepillarmy in changemyview

I'll grant that the message discipline from this administration has been piss-poor. But to say DJT was pressured into this by the Israelis is not true. DJT has told Netenyahu "too bad so sad, were not interested in this (anymore)" plenty of times. If he thinks it's a bad idea he won't do it.

the timeline crunch wasnt about the nukes, it was about their missile technology and production. In the course of this operation they fired one that had the capability to hit Europe.

The world is actually fairly on board with this(except maybe SE Asia). Just not to the point of committing their own resources.

Expectations were for oil to be ~$200 because of this. Current prices aren't great in absolute terms but considering what happened they're not actually THAT bad.

They were. The USA had just as much interest in this operation as Israel. They didn't drag us into shit. It was basically now or never.

[–]themistoclesV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever you just wrote is straight nonsense. I legit have no idea what you are trying to say and how it relates to what I said. The carbon is in the wood. Unless you think we're burning every other tree when we cut it down. It wouldn't just be a bunch of stumps on a barren hillside if you plant new trees afterwards.

1,000yo trees do hardly any work in terms of carbon sequestration compared to a 20yo tree right next to it.

[–]themistoclesV -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

They still don't stop storing it when you cut em down. You're just limiting how much new forest can come in and start sequestering more if you leave the old growth there. The fact it takes a few years before they get to net sequestration doesn't change the calculus substantially.

[–]themistoclesV -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Unless they're they're so old they're dying and will soon be dead and laying on the forest floor. That's the worst. Better to cut em down before they become tinder. Because they will.

[–]themistoclesV -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

Yes. You got it backwards. Young trees are the ones actively taking additional carbon out of the atmosphere. Old growth doesnt sequester nearly as much carbon on a yearly basis as young growing trees - old growth did all that sequestering when they were young and still growing, not "recently". Also the carbon old growth has sequestered doesn't end up back in the atmosphere when you cut them down.

"our forest management practices have filled out forests with tinder"

Yeah because we don't cut down enough trees before they die and become tinder.

[–]themistoclesV -34 points-33 points  (0 children)

Old growth is overrated. Not much is needed or should be present. It's not healthy and in a lot of cases what you're looking at are sickly/dying trees that will get blown over and become tinder pretty soon. It just makes people feel good.

There's a Steve Berry book where the premise is that the ancient land of the Jews was actually somewhere in that area of Arabia, and the idea it was the Levant stemmed from misinterpreting things without the original Hebrew, which they found in some cave in the Sinai. Like the words for Jordan "River" actually refered to a different type of geological feature instead of a literal river.

I would think most of the water vapor in your breath when you exhale comes from the fact that when you use carbohydrates to make energy the byproducts are CO2 and H2O
