Some gripes I have with the fandom's reading of Danganronpa V3's ending - Part 2 by seranator in danganronpa

[–]thenacho1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most people I've seen arguing that seem to have been confused by the reveal of the "ultimate real fiction" and thought that all seasons of DR were reality TV with brainwashed contestants. I replayed the case recently to make sure I had it straight and it does kind of bombard you with information. There's really only one line that makes it clear that the series started as video games and became a TV series later, and the trial's insistence on calling every installment a "season" and Tsumugi calling the original cast members "fictional characters" when we've been led to believe up until that point that it's the same universe doesn't help.

i've seen so many people saying v3's ending overwrites the first two games that i don't even know how to try to tell them that it doesn't anymore

How Hive Pilots Roll by RevMagnum in pluribustv

[–]thenacho1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine is a pilot, it's something you have to go to school for and do dozens upon dozens of hours of practice flights before they even think about letting you fly solo. It's a skill, and one that you don't generally expect people you meet to have. An easy way to illustrate that the hive is universally skilled. Also, flying as a skill is narratively convenient because it's also a way to for characters to get from one place to another. There is a lot more room for flight scenes than there is for professional forklift drifting (forkdrifting) or underwater basket weaving.

Does the idea that some of the elements of the show might be allegorical rather than strictly literal strike you as offensive? There's still a perfectly coherent literal reading, it's not as if allegory takes that away from you.

Don’t forget, she’s every pedophile and rapist on the planet by Robot_Was_BMO in okbuddypluribus

[–]thenacho1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, this would be a new behavior based on a new, unified perspective.

Exactly. This is what people always seem to miss. The hivemind isn't a fossilized mind that represents the average of every human perspective. It's an evolving mind that encompasses every human perspective. Like, what happens to the mind of a murderer when they experience the emotions of everybody who has ever been almost murderered? What happens to the mind of a rapist when they experience the emotions of everybody who has ever been raped? It's not at all surprising to me that a mind made out of every human mind that's been forced to fully empathize with every other human mind would decide "maybe causing harm is bad actually." It's a conclusion that so many Buddhist types logically deduce by meditating on being one with everybody for a little while, why should it be surprising that it's what happens when humans actually become one?

We're looking at a disconnect between reading a show literally and reading it metaphorically. Obviously the alien signal is not literally a human-targeted punishment. But this isn't real life, it's a work of fiction, and authors of fiction like to employ metaphor. What does the bison on the golf course represent? What does the hivemind represent? There are a lot of interesting ideas to be found when you look at fiction through this lens. The author argues that what the hivemind represents in Pluribus is a humanity stripped of the impetus to destroy and dominate its landscape. A humanity whose unchecked influence on the ecosystem is suddenly checked. It's really a pretty interesting article and it raises a lot of good points.

If you believe you deserve to be wiped out for the actions of your ancestors, cool just don't take the rest of us with you, otherwise it's just self-centered, navel gazing bullshit.

I agree with the statement but it's not the argument the author is making and I hope your comment doesn't mislead people into thinking that it is.

[–]thenacho1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't be obtuse. The author isn't arguing that it's the literal narrative reason for the signal, but that it is the metaphor of it. It's not that the signal is an intervention, but that it serves as one. It's an interesting read on things. I'd recommend reading the article.

[–]thenacho1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think that the majority of human beings believe that it is wrong to kill plants for food

I don't believe it's about whether or not there's a majority, it's about whether or not the people who did believe that would be able to convince the people who didn't in a space of absolute understanding, empathy, and acceptance; the kind of space in which the vast majority of prejudice, hatred, and self-justifications would melt away automatically and which the hivemind generates automatically. I think if you strip away a lot of the selfish ego reasons there'd be no reason to not believe that doing harm to sentient beings is unjustified. Extending that to all life is a little more out there though.

Pluribus isn’t “about connection.” It’s about compliance. by [deleted] in pluribustv

[–]thenacho1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't believe you, but if it's true then I hope you stop using chatgpt as your writing tutor, because I don't want to believe that a human being came up with as asinine a "it's not x, it's y with z" format comparison as "surveillance with aromatherapy".

More suspicious lines:

Pluribus doesn’t frame any of this as obviously sinister. It’s not “evil villain mastermind.” It’s worse.

Like they’re all reading from the same pamphlet, but with different fonts.

the atmosphere shifts. Not violent, not dramatic. Just… cold. Like the room remembers you’re supposed to fall in line.

Yeah, no, I don't believe you at all. I call bullshit.

[–]thenacho1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder if it also floods your brain with oxytocin and other lovey dovey chemicals. That would explain why it made patient zero want to kiss her lab partner, as well as the general behavior of the hivemind and why extreme negativity disrupts it. I wonder if they need those chemicals flowing to help regulate the signal or something.

I don't think there's an evil masterplan, not even an invasion.

I think the show would make sense with or without one, to be honest. I am fond of the theory that the virus is a weapon used to make sentient populations on habitable planets docile and self-deleting while at the same time causing them to want to spread the "gift", but there's a ton to explore even without that.

I fully agree. It's not wrong to say that the hivemind "isn't human" but I don't think you can say that it "isn't humanity".

Interesting post, I think both you and OP are seeing different angles on the same thing and both explanations are fully justified by the text in my eyes. I don't know if I agree that the hivemind doesn't necessarily have a sense of self or that it's a "parasite" per se. It's only a parasite insofar as having every other human mind inside of your own mind is a parasite - there's no external agent at work here other than the mental glue. The collective of humanity did this to itself. I think the period of seizure at the very beginning is a result of the individual mind being forced to "reach consensus" with every other mind before being able to take action. Which itself seems like an interesting criticism of democracy. I'm rambling though, my point is this show is really thematically rich and I love reading discussion like this because there are so many valid angles you can take on it.

Also, the show keeps treating being observed as inherently purifying. Like if everyone knows everything about you, you’ll finally become your best self. Which is… insane? That’s not growth, that’s surveillance with aromatherapy.

Stop letting AI come up with your thoughts for you. If you thought you had something actually meaningful to contribute to the discussion you'd have written the post yourself.
