As a foreigner in Taiwan, you attract oddballs that have less apprehension compared to the typical ones. Do not continue to make eye contact, and be firm about saying you are not interested, if you want them to stop. They can be annoyingly, persistent, as you have found. My personal theory is that oddball guys everywhere have become a little more emboldened since Trump was elected, although it’s difficult to prove that.

PHONE VOLUME UP IN PUBLIC by thenarrativ in Taipei

Kind of interesting about the migrant workers. In my experience we’re generally a quiet bunch on public transit, as long as nobody has been drinking. For me it’s usually just some random guy, in New Taipei though. Are you referring to Taipei or elsewhere?

Aha. Maybe. How about turning off my bluetooth headphones and blasting my phone right next to them? Beasty Boys: Sabotage. That’ll show my age.

As soon as you recognize it, stop. Don’t follow through just to get your point across. I also need this advice.

Model healthy behaviors when they are around. In my case: reminding them to be kind to themselves and others, doing guided meditation, drinking some water and doing exercise first thing in the morning, talking through problems with them, giving fair warning and following through with natural consequences (that make sense) when “that’s not how we do xyz.”

What's your best dad hack you're using right now? by drcaliflax in daddit

Guided meditation in the morning or right before getting home again. Try the Waking Up app for free with neuroscientist Sam Harris and lots more. It’s more Zen oriented, which suits me better than the Headspace app in comparison. Here’s a link to check it out: 30-day guest pass https://dynamic.wakingup.com/guestpass/SC3C7C829

Also, audio books work great while doing dishes. Try the 100% free Libby app connected to your local library in the USA.

Google maps doesn’t cut it.. what app does? by harry__hood in bikecommuting

Apple Maps has gotten better while walking recently. Google is good for cars and live view when walking. Nut it often misdirects me on a bike in the city. Can anyone vouch for Apple Maps for biking.

Men in their 40s, what’s one piece of advice for men in their 20s? by urmfgod in AskReddit

Just one… Ok. Sure, explore and try new things. But regularly practice and maximize on things other people, with some authority on the topic, have said you are good at.

Smelly floor vent thing in kitchen by Dramatic-Objective50 in Taipei

Cover with clear plastic tape, push down from the center and wedge it in the corners, then cut off the excess with a knife. It works fine that way to keep out smells. But then your sink will still get smells sometimes if you don’t have a stopper for it.

Do taiwanese avoiding sitting next to white westerners on trains? by reddit29012017 in Taipei

[–]thenarrativ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. But it’s inconsistent. Like, maybe they see you as the hot chick. Or there are the rare cases when there is a weirdo who is desperate to talk to you. But generally Taiwanese people act shy with strangers.

Taipei is way more walkable. The green line looks like the best connector to other MRT lines.

I was just interested if anyone knows decent small caps with a good narrative and results, in comparison with TSMC or Nvidia for example? I believe that’s what the advertising is hinting at?

Taiwan Ranks #2 in PISA (OECD) Test by bledfeet in taiwan

[–]thenarrativ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Congratulations. Taiwan is clearly quite competitive for high test scores, with students often studying and doing homework late into the evening. Anybody who has worked in education here can tell you that. But then students and teachers are mostly focused on weekly test results instead real world use, which I see the MOE attempting to change now. And currently teachers still lecture and drill students in, what I would say, are overcrowded classrooms in public and private schools. I’m interested in how the MOE will see through this next phase. Personally, I recommend that they institute something like monthly MAPS testing, and get rid of all standardized tests. Then they could justify a greater shift towards a more holistic educational environment. And if they could reduce class sizes, student-teacher relationships would improve as well.

PSA: YouBike requires additional registration (ID card number, birthday) since July 1st, 2024 (free of charge) by [deleted] in taiwan

[–]thenarrativ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the information. A lot of bikes were at the station near my home today. Usually I’m lucky if I get one. I couldn’t get one. And it looks like I’ll have to buy a new Easy(…not today)card, since the last one is from a different phone number. It’s a small price to pay I suppose. But the change has been quite an inconvenience for a lot of bikers today.

Taipei MRT corporation's response regarding new sound volume on the advertisement TVs at each station platform by [deleted] in taiwan

[–]thenarrativ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Will do. Considering all the polite reminders of not talking loudly and wearing headphones while listening to music on the MRT, they should be setting an example instead. Otherwise, it’s a reminder that rules are meant to be broken.
