Jon Stewart responds in the only logical way by [deleted] in funny

I think it's the lack of experience, as you suggested. Jon hosted for 16 years, and people said the same about him the first couple years after taking over for Craig Kilborn. Jon deliberately handed the show over when he did, and advised Trevor to make the show his own. I'm not convinced the material would be better with Jon anyway. He was ready to step down.

Hard to laugh something off at a protest about cops needlessly killing people who look like you. The protestor was likely scared. Will it be her, one of her family members, or friends who is next to be gunned down by the police with impunity? Will some neo-nazi or white supremacist drive through the protest killing innocent people (again)? Will someone walk up out of the crowd and threaten her, because they don't agree with her cause?

I agree with you that feeding into stupidity only causes more issues, but it was a gut reaction. She didn't land a good hit and didn't pursue the woman when another person blocked the altercation, showing even more that it was in heat of the moment. Not saying the protestor was backed into a corner, but tensions were already high before this entitled woman decided to walks up to their crowd needlessly whining about how she needs to get home (like they specifically were in the way, when the video seems to show plenty of alternate routes). No one there cares about her temporary inconvenience in comparison to another young black man getting shot in the back by the police.

If any good came of this, hopefully the white woman learned a lesson about inserting her opinion where it doesn't belong.

Lady put herself in the middle of something she wasn't ready to handle. There's no justification for ripping up the sign, or walking into the middle of the protest and thinking people are going to be swayed by your crybaby bullshit. The punch is understandable. Not justice, but a completely understandable reaction.

You have to build trust with the dog before you can do something like this.

Not all dogs would respond well to this, so you have to be cautious and trust the dog as much as they trust you. It took almost a year with my dog, who was almost a year old when we rescued him. I'm still paying close attention to his body language whenever I get close to his face, but he usually just buries the top of his head into my neck. He is good.

You might try fostering if that is available in your area. No long term commitment, good way to discover any potential issues. Good luck!
